Ravens Signings and Re-signings (actual and speculation)

1,642 posts in this topic

They really need to bring back the third round tender. First, second then Original Round only? Guessing the child support thing maybe had something to do with it?

Before that happened, it was speculated that he'd get a 2nd rounder. After - it was being said that he'd get a low tender.

I just am not sure that transgression rises to the level of changing other teams view of trying to get him. Now that we gave him that low tender, I guess we'll see. He may stay, but we definitely left him at risk.

Will Hill plays SS, Brooks plays FS. We let Hill go, and we have a hole at SS or we risk Elam getting beat and being the weakness of our secondary. Or we would have a hole at SS either way.

For the umpteenth time, there is no real difference between FS and SS. Please stop.

Sign one of the NFL's best young and budding cornerbacks to a fair contract? Nah, why would they? I think it's more than likely that they'll even go as far as to tag Jimmy if they feel they need to. I wouldn't bet on losing him, at all.

I agree. The FO has said that they can't give everyone market, but they have to pick and chose who to give market to and retain. The way they talk about Jimmy, I feel like they view him as a guy we can't lose and will be willing to pay market to him. Of course - a lot will depend on how he plays this year and whether he stays healthy.

We need to keep Will Hill at almost any cost, guy is a stud and he was just getting started last year after his suspension.. incredible value for money even if we have to match another teams offer on him, as long as the offer isn't ridiculous he will be worth every penny.

Would be insane if we pulled AJ somehow and then got a wr in the 1st round

Apparently, the FO doesn't agree. If they felt that way, he'd have gotten a 2nd round tender to keep teams away from him.

Interesting to see The Ravens gave Will Hill a low tender.

I was a little surprised but I understand the logic.  The tender allows us to keep him at a very low price and still gives us the chance to match another teams offer.

I doubt a team would go after him with any sort of long term deal or something we can't match due to his history and the fact that his next suspension would be an entire season.

If a team does come in I don't think Ozzie would hesitate to match the offer within reason.  He's more valuable to us than other teams out there.

I like to think of it more as not bidding against ourselves.  The Bills gave McCoy a huge deal before the market had a chance to decide what he was worth.  Teams may be less interested due to his prior history.

We could only find out his true value to the FO based on whether or not we match an offer should another team give him one.

With Hartline reportedly going to Cleveland, look out for us pursing Stevie Johnson and Cecil Shorts.

Yes and no. Hill is one of those guys that can play both, but you don't want a guy like Kam Chancellor playing FS.

Well, I wouldn't want him in centerfield.

People need to get that FS and SS have the same responsibilities, generally speaking. ONLY real difference is that FS plays centerfield more.

Ravens made offer to Cary WIlliams. The other teams interested are the Titans, Jets, and Seahawks. Seahawks seem like an unlikely option now due to the signing of Will Blackmon

I would not mind having Cary back. Inject some of that attitude into this defense which has been sorely missing.

Andre Johnson released! ANDRE JOHNSON RELEASED!  GO GET HIM!!!!! LETS DO IT OZZIE!

We cannot afford him.

Not at all. A SS is more responsible for playing in the box, sometimes almost like a 5th LB in certain schemes. FS are more responsible for playing back in single high coverage. It can vary scheme to scheme, but ultimately, the ideal FS is Ed Reed and the ideal SS is Troy Polamalu. Both are HOF talent with very, very different play styles.

It all depends on the scheme, and more schemes are pushing to interchangeable safeties that can play free or strong. We're in that same boat.

Agree to disagree.

Would love to see Cary back. Yeah he has a mouth but man did he play like a Raven. I hated to see him go but knew he would ask for too much money. With Seattle out of it, and the Titans/Jets and us left. Jets are going to go hard trying to bring Revis back, so take them out. Tennessee will have to overpay so in conclusion, I expect Cary to be coming back to the nest.

Cecil Shorts would be a typical Ozzie move that pays off in the regular season.

My thoughts exactly. Get a player that can do what Torrey did and a little more for less money.

sure we can he's not in his prime anymore teams think he's old and broken down, maybe even a bad locker room presence.  And thats where we come in we will swoop him up at a discount.

Andre and Steve along with our young wrs. If we figure out the RB situation we will be solid on offense (also the tight end situation).

Kinda worried about losing Hill tbh.

I'd be okay signing Cary, but not for that much money. Kind of hoping we get someone a bit better than him though.

Id love us to sign Shorts. He had a down year, but it was with an inconsistent rookie QB and the Jags phasing him out in favor of rookie WR's that were part of the long-term plan. I definitely could see him having a bounce back year with us. Only 27 too.

If Hill gets an offer elsewhere, I wouldn't mind bringing Pollard back. Bringing him and Cary back would inject some attitude into this defense that was missed last year. Brooks at FS, Pollard back at SS and drafting a SS to groom behind Pollard would really improve our secondary.

Devin Smith would be a guy I'd like if we did something like that.

Will Hill was said to be the 14th best ranked Safety according to PFF. I don't resort to PFF, but that tells me that keeping him would be in our best interest at least from other teams. Dude was also coming off a suspension, he could be serious with a full season.

Anyone else concerned by Tucker only getting a 2nd round tender? I would give up a 2nd round pick for him in a heartbeat.

Nope. No team will give up a second round pick for a Kicker regardless how good he is. Kickers can be found in the late rounds or Undrafted like Tucker was. Tucker will have a long term deal done before the season begins. Otherwise he'll just end up getting tagged next off-season like Gostkowski was this year.

I highly doubt anyone would. We talk about the RB position being devalued, no position in the NFL has been more devalued than place kicker, as much as I love Tucker, getting a 2nd would make me do flips.

With a 2nd, we could use it as trade bait and get into the low teens, getting us either Parker, White or Cooper or better yet keep it, which may be the better option, 2nd may not be worth it.

But 2nd round pick would be huge for us.

He was the #2 ranked safety in 2013 as well.

I agree it's unlikely, but wouldn't completely rule it out. Remember the Jags took a punter in the 3rd just a couple years ago.. You never know what some if these dumb teams will do

I agree with other posters that he's not in the Megatron, AP, Lewis range, but no one expects him to get $16, $17 million like some of those elite guys. Jimmy is a very good corner who's only being held back by health. The Ravens know that they can put Jimmy on any receiver and that receiver will have their worst day of the season. You don't just let that go because you can't "afford" $10 million per season. We're talking about a cornerstone of the defense and someone you build the secondary around

I actually thought we'd give the 2nd round tender to Hill, I'd be worried about losing him. If someone swoops him and offers him a contract he's easily gone, and teams know our cap situation, they know we can't bid much and with the safety position becoming increasingly valued, it's a risky opposition, at least with a 2nd, we'd gladly let him go. Hill was one of the bright-spots, I feel that with a full season, he could be one of the top ranked safeties.

PFT is reporting that Atlanta, Indy, Washington and us are competing for the services of Justin Forsett. I can see Dan Snyder over paying Forsett, I can see Atlanta over paying but something tells me we and Indy would not overpay.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/03/09/report-ravens-among-four-teams-interested-in-justin-forsett/

Why exactly are the Redskins looking at him? Is Freddy Morris not good enough for them?
