Merged: Brandon Marshall reportedly being traded to the Jets

467 posts in this topic

Yeah probably...It would still be a good move. I'd like for us to get a deep threat. It would be nice to have Marshall with Smith Sr. and maybe Aghlor later on in the draft.

It was a three year extension during that time, it only runs up till 2017, Brandon would still be playing on a high level and it would be nice to have him even longer.

If we did theoretically trade for Marshall (and I am not convinced we will, as I think this is a lot of fan-inspired rumors, but hey, I can hope!) then we would only be on the hook for his base salary and his workout bonuses. We may also be obliged to pay him the 9M in 2017 if we reach the Super Bowl, so it's certainly possible that could be a realistic outcome. At worst, you have him for two years for 7.5M and 7.9M and then have to cut bait or extend him in 2017.

He would be an awesome addition, but from the Ravens' perspective, I'm sure we'd be concerned over DV after the Rice debacle. With that said, I don't think Marshall would have any guaranteed money if he was traded to us, so we would win out in that regard unless we restructured his deal.

As for Agholor, I won't go too in-depth because some don't like draft talk in here even during the off-season, but there are other WRs I would like more than him to replace what Torrey gave us. I'd target a similar WR to Torrey if we did lose him.

I'm late and had no idea the Bears weren't interested in re-signing B Marshall. I wonder why?? I'll have to read that article. Anyway, I wanted him before he went to Miami. He would be perfect here. He can be himself, which seems to be very positive since dealing with his earlier personal problems . He would easily and instantly become the best recvr we've ever had. This may not be popular to say but I'd love to have Sr, and Marshall mixed with Brown, Aiken, and Camp. Problem is would Marshall want to come here? I mean, Trestman was his head coach last year. Did Marshall have a problem with the Trestman, Cutler, the OC, or all three? If he and Trestman were on the same page and left on great terms then he may want to come here with Trestman and Flacco instead of Cutler...fingers crossed.

Marshall wants to play for Trestman if the Bears cut him.

http://www.purplereignshow.com/2015/02/03/could-brandon-marshall-be-baltimore-bound

Well that answers my question... fingers still crossed.

Also, if the choice is B Marshall or Torrey...I'm sorry Torrey. I know there's a 4 year difference but proven is proven. And we can either get 2-3 great yrs with a top-5 receiver  or take a chance and hope Torrey turns into a #1 recvr in the next 2-3 yrs

Everything you said about McPhee applied 100% to Paul Kruger as well. Situational edge rusher, not a proven track record of an every-down player, playing alongside Terrell Suggs who was the reigning DPOY. He got $8.2M a year with $20M guaranteed. The Ravens would probably have a tough time paying HALF of that price for McPhee, and he's probably going to get more than that on the open market.

I understand the argument quite well... its just a flawed one. If that logic is applied to McPhee... why stop there? Why not re-sign Torrey, Forsett, and everybody else? Why not spend big in FA, because we can just backload the crap out of contracts with large signing bonuses and small base salaries early, and just "worry about it later", which seems to be the logic used here.

Doesn't work, won't work, and the Ravens won't do that. There is potential cap savings after year 3... the problem is, the cap savings is far, far, far less than the dead money you are taking on for that player to cut him. We've got plenty of examples of precisely the type of contract you guys are advocating on our own roster, namely Webb and Flacco. Take a look at year four of those deals... potential cap savings exist, its small, and the dead money is huge. Very, very, very bad for the franchise.

Remember, just because the guaranteed money is "paid out" doesn't mean its been recognized in cap space by the Ravens yet. There's no guaranteed money left on Joe Flacco's deal after this season either. The Ravens, theoretically, don't have to pay him a dime beyond 2015. Yet, if they didn't and cut him, he'd still have a $25.8M cap hit, even with no guaranteed money left owed to him.

There enlies the problem with the logic of "well we can just cut him after three years and it won't hinder our ability to sign people". It does hinder your ability to sign people, because you're taking on dead cap space even when you cut players.

The logic isnt being applied to everyone. It's being applied to one key, young player as a tactic to keep him when you otherwise probably couldnt.

And you also misread my point.. Kruger is a pure edge rusher. McPhee is not that. He actually rushed better on the inside but doesnt have the size to be a d-lineman. Kruger you could line up at OLB on passing downs and tell him to go. That's not how you get the most out of McPhee.

And using Flacco to make your point about gauranteed monies hitting the cap is a terrible example when discussing mcphee. When you get to the 4th year of the McPhee deal you're probably talking about $8-10 mil maybe in dead money for cutting him, compared to a probably $14mil salary or something in that ballpark.

It's a sizeable chunk of dead money but still a good bit of savings which is all that really matters bc it gives you leverage over the player to restructure.

$14M salary? Umm, no. There's maybe a handful of defensive players in the entire league with a $14M salary, and McPhee wouldn't be one of them.

You just acknowledged yourself that he doesn't have the size to be a 4-3 end, meaning he's already probably eliminated himself from being a part of half the teams in the league that run a 4-3, because he couldn't play DE most likely and he certainly wouldn't play LB in a 4-3.

So, again, he's almost exclusively limited to be an OLB in a 3-4, which depending on how the team chooses to use him, could be rushing from the inside or the outside (sort of like Clay Matthews), but his position is the same.

Given that edge rushers exclusively tend to actually get paid MORE than somebody like a McPhee would, Kruger's contract is sort of spot on when you consider its been two years since he got his deal. The only real problem with using his deal as a benchmark is because Kruger actually didn't get much in terms of bonuses... only about $12M of his $40M was in the shape of bonuses. This was because the Browns annually have an enormous amount of cap space, and can afford $7-8M guaranteed base salaries for 2-3 years. The Ravens certainly could not.

I beg to differ. McPhee has perfect size for 4-3 DE and that's not even a question. Perfect size and skill set. He'd be great there. Why don't you think he fits there?

I think he does fit there... I was responding to another poster who said he couldn't play D-line due to his size.

Besides that article posted, I've read the Bear plan on cutting him.  Could make sense with all the money invested in Cutler and and needing to invest in the defense.  Would love for him to come here, especially for a cap friendly deal.  A little suspect to me though, because wasn't he just re-signed?  I know everyone is anti Torrey, but he can and will get an equal or higher contract elsewhere.  I hope something is worked out with him.  Even if Torrey and Brandon were somehow brought in, would still want one of the top 3 picks spent either on TE or WR.  I'm almost positive that 2 of the first 3 picks go to either rb, wr, or te.

I think it makes more sense from the Bears perspective to keep him for this season. You could see how this year plays out, cut him with a $6.2M cap savings next offseason, and use that money to re-sign Jeffery who would be a FA in 2016.

Was thinking that too.  Seems to early to cut ties to me as well and for the same reasons you said, especially with Jefferey still on his rookie deal.  Regardless, I still want to keep Torrey, however everything works out.

Just read that his base salary of 7.5 isn't guaranteed until March 12th.  This should be an interesting off season.

That's the start of the FA period, but its guaranteed whether or not he's on the roster.

From what I've read, that base salary isn't guaranteed unless he's on the roster on the 3rd day of free agency.  That's a big part of why it's being speculated that he'll be cut.  They release or trade him and they are off the hook for it

That's a lot to talk about with a coach unless you really think you'll be a free agent soon.  Of course I was under the impression a coach and player under contract can't discuss the possibilities of him switching teams like that.

Yeah, if Harbaugh did that, it's considered tampering and not allowed.

Back loading contracts for veterans is something the Steelers used to always do. It ended up leaving them in cap hell for awhile, something I don't want the Ravens to go through.

exactly. a team who took the opposite approach, the patriots, just won the super bowl.

i say stick to the formula of letting players walk when its their due time and rebuilding through the draft, and using free agency to fill holes and make the occasional splash signing.

we have been doing good finding good chunks of cheap quality roster space in the draft, and we need to make some cheap FA signings to fill the hole at cb, but aside from that, we need to let mcphee walk, let torrey walk, cut jacoby after june 1st, and let the rest of the contracts just play theirselves out, that should leave us with enough space to make a move like signing marshall which would be huge for this offense.

we were having these same discussions in the 2010 offseason before we signed boldin and we were wondering how we were gonna retain so and so and how we were gonna address this and that position, we stayed patient and stayed put, made a nice little signing with boldin, and cut the guys who were far past their primes the following offseason, and we were a better team because of it.

i could see a similar scenario playing out with this offseason and the next, 2 or 3 longtime ravens are gonna have injury plagued seasons and will offer some cap savings and we wont see them back the following season and then suddenly young guys will come out the woodwork and round out the team.

Yeah, I posted before I actually researched it.  It was "seemingly" just an interview question so it's not an issue with the NFL.  At the same time, it could have been very a very smart way to find out how much interest the Ravens could show him.  Something like that I'm sure they could follow up on post interview and, if necessary, argue that it was just more innocent talk after the segment was over

If Marshall is cut he won't be cheap. Between Ngata and Marshall I'd actually take Ngata. He may be on the older side but it's harder to find good veteran talent on the dline. If push comes to shove I hope we trade Ngata.

And if you honestly think that "WR is more important". It's not. We have have an abundant supply of dlinemen, but Ngata is still one of the more valuable cogs here imo. Defense wins championships. Hell, had we had a secondary we probably would've made the super bowl with SSR as our best WR...

I'd love to have Marshall, but if it comes down between him and Ngata I pick Ngata. I hope to god we restructure Ngata so we can get both.

The only rebuttal I'd give is that we're very successful developing DL. We're not so experienced developing WR.

I want Ngata back because I don't want to watch our front seven crap the bed like it did in 2012 and 2013. We've seen what happens when you gamble on youth and lose. You can't afford to gamble on the defensive line. If you can't stop the run or rush the passer, you might as well not even play defense.

I hear you but the defense did pretty well in those four games without him. I'm not sure how indicative that was when you consider who we faced.

Pretty much this which is why I supported us drafting Mosley and Jernigan. The sexy pick isn't always the right one..

If we have a great front 7, a good secondary, and we retain the oline(along with drafting a solid all around back), we won't need an "elite WR corp". I'd rather have those three things. We need secondary DEPTH(I think another starter wouldn't hurt but depth is what we sorely lacked), an all around back, and probably a reliable receiving  TE. That's probably the plan tbh

We did. But honestly do we do the same vs the Steelers and Pats without him? Ngata isn't the player he used to be but it's a lot harder to find a great dlinemen than it is to get a serviceable WR.

If this was on realm of possibility, then it wont happen until his cut.  Ozzie wants those comp picks, so you would need to wait for it a LONGGGG time..

Comp picks have been and likely will continue to be overrated.

I seriously doubt Ozzie or anybody else in the franchise has even once passed over getting a player they wanted and could afford just for the sake of getting a comp pick that historically never amounts to much.

If Marshall was cut, and he didn't become a Raven, it would have nothing to do with a comp pick. It would have to do with either us or him not wanting to play here, or the fact that we couldn't afford him.

Did Harbs and Brandon talk? I don't think it is allowed and I haven't seen a video or real source that says so.

Honestly, this all seems like rumors spread by fans. I'm a fan of Marshall but it seems unrealistic right now. I'd love to see it happen, I'm going to wait for more news and sources before I get too excited.

Welp, they did talk and it is true but I doubt it was serious, most likely in a friendly manner, all laughs, I don't think things would fly well with the league if they were talking about making moves.
