Oh no. Bill Vinovich is the main ref for Patriots game

82 posts in this topic

His crew completely ripped us in half @ the steelers game (week 8) this season.

What do you think about him for the Patriots game?

If we don't commit penalties it won't matter...

Seriously, concerns over the refs are overblown. Don't do stupid stuff and you won't get penalized.

Luckily its an all-start crew and not just Vinovich.  His crew definitely called the worst officiating game against us this season, and it wasn't even close.  I (nor a lot of people) tend to never play the ref card, but it was hard not to after that game.

Here's to hoping he calls a good, fair game.   In the end, it doesn't really matter, the Ravens just need to play their best ball.

They threw for 6 TDs against us. Refs were NOT the problem that game.

I don't see what's so complicated about this for people to understand.

Well, I mean, 98 percent of America hates the Ravens, Goodell hates us, and ESPN is biased. So of course the refs hate us too! They're gonna sabotage our season!

isnt this the same crew from the bengals game too?

The referees in the playoffs do not work with their same crew that they worked with during the regular season.

The are graded and then reasigned with different refs for the playoffs.

My god,the title of this thread almost gave me a panic attack.  All I saw was the "Oh no" portion and I went bananas.  Thank god it was just news about a ref.

if bad calls can't alter the outcomes of games the nfl sure is wasting everyone's time with this silly coaches challenge and instant replay review nonsense.

they are even discussing adding penalty challenges into the mix with the same number of overall challenges.

obviously bad calls and bad penalties can and do alter outcomes, lets just hope this game is called cleanly enough to allow us to prevail.

Bad calls happen, but any particular crew isn't great news or bad news for any team.

The whole concept of all star red shows is absurd to me. The best crews should ref. It's not like the teams playing are all star collaborations.

Fairly certain every other sport grades the refs individually and reassigns them based on grades in the playoffs. NFL was the only one doing the "crew" thing, which is absurd to me. Not like refs feed off each other or need each other to make a proper call.

The NFL has a much bigger team of refs that have to work together with overlapping responsibilities. Taking line judges and making them back judges and things like that is ridiculous. Teams of refs learn to work and communicate together, and then they get mixed up for the most important games of the season. It makes no sense. Much different for the three basketball refs or umpires in baseball that all rotate jobs every game and have very uniques responsibilities that hardly overlap.

Honestly, I don't mind giving up a few roughing penalties early in this, if it stops Pats receivers running their routes, or Brady stepping up. Worked a treat in 2012!

They made a case before the game saying the crew hadn't worked together. Built in excuses to start the game.

These hybrid crews should negate horror officiating en masse (hopefully!).

I think they let the players play a bit more come post season anyway, which is how it should be - and conveniently, fits with our more physical approach to the games.

It's hard to get mad at Refs when Big Ben throws 6 TD passes.

I disagree. It's easy to get mad at virtually anything when that happens!

Just no phantom calls.

If its a blatant penalty, fine. If its a Steve Smith Offensive PI to take away the game changer by a ref not in position to make the call, its gonna be a long day.

For the posters saying that refs don't make a difference, go ask the Lions about that......

Ahhh, I was under the impression it was on a position basis.  Not just a blanket grading.  That is weird then.

Can I also ask them about countless other blown opportunities where the blame falls exclusively on them ?

Difference? Yes. Change the outcome of a game? No, and not even the Lions would tell you that.

Can't even count the dozens of plays and opportunities the Lions had to win that game after that call.

While you're at it ask them for a clear explanation how the penalty was flagged, announced, and then picked up with no explanation?

Agreed the 10 yard punt after the call and the failure to go for it on 4th and 1 impacted the game, but are you saying that taking away a clear first down penalty with the lead in the 4th qtr didn't impact the outcome of the game? You mean to say this was not a tide turner?

or are you just looking to make a smart comment and get a rise?

Literally impossible to know or speculate about. Lions might go down the field and score, or Stafford might throw a pick-six on the very next play.

Just one of a long, long, long list of plays and moments in every single game that have impact on the game.

So, you don't think the OPI call against Smith in the cinci game, right or wrong, changed the outcome?

It usually doesn't happen that game changing calls occur late in the game in any sport.  Refs generally "swallow their whistles" allowing the teams to decide the outcome, kind of an unwritten rule. But there are exceptions.
