Updated: Who Should Be Our Next OC? It's Trestman

665 posts in this topic

I know there's a lot of talk about our next OC but we should really consider bringing in Vic Fangio to the defensive side. At least as an assistant to the linebackers coach he has a lot of knowledge to give to our young LBs

This shouldn't even be debated.  He should be hired immediately if possible.  He is an outstanding coach and SF really dropped the ball in pissing him off and letting him leave as a result.  Washington was insane not to offer him a deal right away during his interview.

I swear we run the lowest amount of shotgun in the league , and its not even like Flacco is bad in the shotgun.

Needs to change.

Why? Not being a wise guy .... what is it you're trying to fix by moving him into shotgun more? This year he had career highs in almost every statistical category (and the few of those that weren't career highs, the numbers were within a percent or so of his career high). And is it into shotgun, or pistol or shotgun and pistol?

I can't blame him if he wants to be a HC, but consistency would be nice.

If you want to be a head coach, become a Raven... it also works for secondary players if you want to suffer a season ending knee injury.

Lol, or if you're a subpar defensive player and want to make top 20 at your position money and retire for life after 2 seasons.

Damn.  He might be the only one I can think of.  Think even Corey Graham fell off this year, though I didn't watch him much.

Graham had pretty decent year with Bills

Did he?  Thought I read somewhere at the start of the year the Bills were thinking about using him at safety because an UDFA was pushing him...can't remember where though.

If Gase is hired, I'd like to bring in Broncos TE Virgil Green - good run blocker with receiving potential

This. I think he's a player who just hasn't gotten the right chance. Coming out, he was that real athletic, receiving tight end, but he's been tremendous as a blocker. I think if he got a chance, he'd be good. Either him or Charles Clay

The great thing going for us is that Harbs is a great coach to work with. He is able to set aside personal egos and deal with ex-HC type candidates very well it seems like. Just look at what happened to the last 3 that were here - one is a HC in Detroit, the other DC in NY and the 3rd just became HC in Denver!

The Ravens have become the go to spot for ex-HC to regain some mojo and hit the market again with great success! That is really a testament to John Harbaugh's treatment of his coaching staff!

I think if we go with GASE (knowing he wants to be a HC) , We should go with trestman or knapp  as a QB coach.so if Gase leaves we will have his replacement in house.

from what I  read(ESPN) GASE, TRESTMAN or KNAPP,what are the pros and cons of those 3.

KNAPP has the experience in the kubiack system, while trestman is considered a QB genius, now I am not sold on GASE ,I consider him fools gold,I mean after all he did have peyton @ QB

 thanks

If we pick Gase, we'll probably know in a day or two. He's arguably the best OC on the market and there's eight OC vacancies. If we don't offer him something tonight/tomorrow, I think he's gone.

Also, La Canfora is really pushing the idea of the Ravens hiring Doug Marrone. I love an OC that's a former line coach, so that's a neat idea. Anyone know anything about Marrone?

I would kind of like to see the organization scour the college ranks for a fresh young mind to be honest.

I need to make quick decisions before the senior bowl.....a new OC will be crucial for our upcoming drafts.......We need a legit WR and some DBs on top of it...

Continuity is the key guys , we can't have a new OC every year that will hinder joes and our offense growth, we need someone that can come in and continue what kubes started we can't have a new playbook every year.

Guaaahhhhh....Adam Gase is a really good candidate...But Marc Trestman just seems like a really good option. The guy led a high powered Oak. offense that was best in the league and featured Rich Gannon as the league MVP. Also, Josh McCrown's 13-0 TD:INT ratio, that was all him, If you look at his resume, it's more impressive than Kubiak's IMO.

I wouldn't mind who's the OC, both guys are great and to be honest, no one should be upset if F.O looks towards Trestman.

Gase looks like a great candidate and pretty popular.

What's the deal with Kyle Shanahan? Obviously he is the best candidate. If he doesn't want it i think we should interview several dozen candidates familiar with the west coast/spread rythym offenses and find the next great offensive innovator. Interview WR coaches offensive line coaches qb coaches and the most brilliant college offensive coordinators. Just like with players and Hollywood and the corporate circuit there's undiscovered talent out there in coaching/scheming.

Let's see this as an opportunity for the offense to put more time in together during their off time and outwork other teams and be in unrivaled sync. Didn't all that advanced strategy and timing start in Baltimore anyways??!! Unitas to Berry!! Flacco to Campanaro and whomever else the ravens sign, trade for or draft. This winter spring and summer Joe and his crew can spend more time together as they acclimate to the new offensive coach.

I would like Isaac Bruce or Michael Irvin as WRs coach or even Torrey Holt. Then Kurt Warner or Dilfer as QB coach.

The deal with Shanny is that he has a deal with the Falcons

The more I read on Adam Gase, the more I'm softening to the thought of him for this very reason. It sounds like his scheme relies a lot on the QB getting a read on the defence and working from there.

I'm still a bit dubious of his record because of his work with Peyton, but I guess I could be convinced to come off the ledge if we hire him.

Read that NYT article a page or two back.   Apparently Peyton and Gase emailed and texted all week long about strategy and gameplanning and Manning loved having this guy with him.   Just because Manning may have called things at the line doesn't mean he didn't have Gase calling plays in from the side.

Apparently his ability to read defenses and remember tendencies is insane.   Being an OC isn't just about calling plays on Sunday, and if Peyton trusts him that much to put his plan together, I'd have to think he is good.

I like Steve Mariucci a lot. Maybe he would like to come back to coaching and call plays and orchestrate an offense. He and Gruden are 2 of the best offensive schemers I have watched. Shame Jay Gruden is exiled 30 miles south

Yeah I agree. I have no problem with hiring hiim.

But there are plenty of viable questions, such as why the likes of Fox or Del Rio didn't take him with them to their new places. A lot of possible reasons for that, but its still worth pondering as part of the interview process.

Ultimately, gut feeling says we probably hire him in the next day or so.

I'm not going to pretend to know exactly what the positives are for any of these candidates. I just want a guy who has a philosophy that in general allows Flacco to do some of the things Kubiak had him doing this year. Getting on the move and getting the ball out of his hands in a fairly reasonable amount of time.

Someone who has experience in play calling and has enough ingenuity to be creative in how he can get the most out of the guys we have on the roster. It would also be nice for them to be creative in how to expose an opponents weakness and how to make in-game changes as needed.

Who is that? I've no idea, but I hope he's out there looking for work.

Remember the Ravens haven't gotten permission to interview Gase yet. Elway COULD screw us again..wouldn't put it past him.

They're interviewing him tonight I believe...
