Another interesting thing about John Harbaugh

21 posts in this topic

I was just thinking about this today and think it is really cool. I'm a big fan of players staying with one team for their whole careers or coaches staying for many years (like college) and building a legacy with a team. Harbaugh has been here for 7 years and unless something crazy happens will be here for an 8th so far. I think it's really helped to build an identity when you know who the guy is leading the team year in and year out and after ray and ed leaving its still cool to be able to see guys like Flacco, yanda, suggs, and Ngata who will all hopefully be Ravens for life and be able to identify with them. Here's the guys ahead of Harbaugh:

  1. Bill Belichick (New England Patriots): January 27, 2000
  2. Marvin Lewis (Cincinnati Bengals): January 14, 2003
  3. Tom Coughlin (New York Giants): January 6, 2004
  4. Mike McCarthy (Green Bay Packers): January 12, 2006
  5. Sean Payton (New Orleans Saints): January 18, 2006
  6. Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers): January 22, 2007
  7. John Harbaugh (Baltimore Ravens): January 19, 2008

You look at the obvious guys like Belichick and Coughlin who are great coaches but after that Harbaugh seems to be the most consistent. Payton won a superbowl early on, McCarthy won a superbowl early on, Tomlin won two early on but has been pretty mediocre since then for a team who is the "best drafters in the nfl" according to others. And Marvin has lost four playoff games in a row and is 0-6 in his playoff career. It's just awesome to see Harbaugh building a legacy here and I hope he stays for a lot longer as I think he brings a real identity and culture to the Ravens team. He has also been one of the most consistent coaches in the NFL and I think the Legacy he has built so far with this team is something that can go underappreciated at times but is certainly something that cannot be understated.

If we could stop losing our Coordinators  and players for that matter almost every yr , i think we could have a dynasty.

Don't really have a choice. When you draft well, you inherently can't retain everybody all the time.

Good point. Its crazy just how many former Ravens coaches are either head coaches or in big spots now. For those that werent watching the Lions Cowboys game or may have missed it, apparently Teryl Austin is now up for an interview with 2-3 teams for a head coaching job. Just crazy the talent this team develops with both players and coaches

Hope he gets hired,  if the RAVENS go deep into the play offs, other teams coordinators that lost will get interviews and maybe hire them before they even get a chance to talk to Kubiak. It will hopefully buy us another yr.

Nice list. Looking ahead, I wouldn't be shocked if three of those guys are gone by the start of the 2016 season. Marvin Lewis should have been fired already. That team could be a lot better than they are. And, if the Giants and Saints have another bad year, I wouldn't be shocked if either of those coaches get fired. Coughlin certainly can't survive another season without a playoff berth.

It's crazy that Harbaugh is already the 7th longest tenured coach and I expect he'll be higher on that list a year from now.

I think Rex may get another shot. There appears to be interest from a couple of teams.

Interesting list, though Lewis seems out of place on it.

I am amused by the fact that Tomlin is hired on my son's b'day, Harbs on my brother's. The one to rule them all, obviously, has been hired on my b'day (the longest tenured one).

ive thought about this myself, i am a huge supporter of harbuagh, i like mellow, yet still "rah-rah" college coach mentality, not a huge x's and o's guy, but a great leader of men, sure he may be a bit control crazy at times, and a little over loyal, but thats just him wanting to be the best at his job and be the best man he can be. he lets his coordinators do their jobs, and he is the guy that holds the team together, joe flacco is our field leader, but harbaugh seems to be without a doubt this teams identity, such a big personality and he so easily earns immense respect from everyone around him, he is a great motivator and a underrated coach in this league, he has his flaws, but i have tremendous respect for harbs and i hope he can stick around for 20+ years and become one of those first ballot HOF coaches like landry or knoll or walsh. harbaugh, joe, steve, ozzie, and eric, can build another decade long stretch that could be comparable to the greatest of the dynasties out there.

This really sums up my feelings exactly. I actually like the fact Harbs was a special teams coach because he knows how to talk to players on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. I'd much rather him be a sound leader of men than a great Xs and Os guy anyway, I like leaving those roles up to the coordinators. Any head coach must have the faith that his coordinators can preach the right message because the head coach cant be everywhere at once. You see supposedly great Xs and Os coaches run into major control problems like in Philadelphia right now, but Harbaugh seems content these days to start giving his coordinators the freedom to run their sides of the ball and Harbaugh will be the leader at the top. The leadership starting from Bisciotti really transcends the organization with a culture of accountability and responsibility and trust. I really hope Baltimore can be that next 15+ year run with the same coach and success only the greats have reached

Tomlin has only won one Super Bowl, actually.

My fault, was it Cowher won that first one and the Tomlin won with Cowhers roster?

Someone on ESPN said that Marvin Lewis should be fired, because in the post season, he's never won a game. 0 and 6.

I really don't buy that.  We've all seen teams that have the players to win it, but for whatever reason coaching holds the team back.  Just b/c the roster didn't turn over after Cowher retired, Tomlin still had to coach the team to a Superbowl Championship.

If Harbaugh would have coached the Ravens to a Superbowl victory his 1st year, would we say it was Billick's team and technically Harbaugh only has one ring?  I think not.

Really suprised Caughlin is still relevant on this list. The players on the Giants roster look like they are there to collect a check and hang it up each game. Besides the obvious OBJ talent popping up.

We will never know what happend to JP3 and his monster season...

...that is exactly what people would say... In fact, they said it after the 2012 super bowl and were saying it as recently as our loss to the Texans.

Here is a great article on Harbaugh explaining his accomplishments and what he may become. They also go in depth on how we searched for corners this year.

This is actually a great article about the Ravens oragnization working together, mainly about Harbaugh though.
