Slick Move by Ozzie?

46 posts in this topic

The Pats biggest weakness is their D-Line, so what does Oz do? He takes a DL from the Pat's practice squad. This weakens their reserves and resets the acclimation clock for most replacement DL. We didn't really need more DL depth compared to other positions, did we?

Seems like a pretty smart move to me. Only thing smarter might have been to fill the entire practice squad with DB's.

I don't think so. Is it possible that not all Practice Squad moves are defensive in nature? Especially this close to the playoffs.

What makes you think that the defensive player we took from them would ever play a snap for them this season?

Obviously there is no way to know if he would have played a snap. But we did cancel an insurance policy. Now the Pats need to go get new insurance.

There's nothing more to this than him being what we deemed the best available player.  We're in no position to sign guys just to spite other teams with our injury issues.  This is a case of us liking Casey Walker, and us signing him.  I doubt things would be any different if he was on the Raiders PS.

OK, and they won't have much problem doing it.

They could just take a player from us if they really wanted to. Something tells me they aren't spending extra hours at night trying to find another DL to poach from somebody else. They can probably just throw a dart at a board and whatever name it lands on they pick.

That's basically about the success rate of teams banking on PS players to make significant impact.

I am going to go against the majority here.

It would not surprise me at all if that sort of thing took place more often than not in the NFL.

Pulling some one off of your practice squad because you know X-team was looking for a player of this position and you wanted to keep that player.

Or taking a player from some other team to prevent him from being activated or picked by an opponent.

Stashing a player on IR.

What you described is team a noticing team b likes a player on team a practice squad so team a puts him on the 53. Sf did this throughout the season and yes that happens.

What the op described is team b taken a player from team a and getting him on the 53 to keep team a from getting him. That's not the same and if team a really was worried they'd promote him or pay him more so he'd say no to team b.

I would say its more common when it comes to trying to learn about the schemes and designs of another team. 49ers/Seahawks would always do this to each other like a week or two before they played.

The fact that its from the Patriots and its at a position that they are perceived as being weak at, to me, is mostly coincidental.

It might not be to hurt their depth. Its probably Walker is the best guy on their PS and we can pick this guys brain about the Patriots gameplans

LOL. I guess.

Honestly if we do make it to the second round. Ideally, I'd rather face between New England and Denver is definitely New England. We match up better against them then Denver.

Maybe if their D-Line drop like flies then I guess you got a point.

This discussion makes me want to ask. How exactly do other teams gain knowledge about players on other practice squads? I understand they are all free game to sign. So is there like a scout from every team at every PS practice? I'm curious about how Ozzie (and other GMs) find these guys.

Wouldn't it be smarter to take players from the team we are going to face in the Superbowl?

I like the way you think. :D

Maybe they've scouted them previously during draft time and never got s chance at them.

That's a very good question. Also, what are the limitations of scouts or agents as it relates to practice squad players? How does it differ from roster players?

The smarter approach is to select the best player who can strengthen your team. Selecting a player for the purpose of crippling an apposing team  only weakens the chance to strengthen your own team.

Sometimes we sign players to the PS so we can use them to practice against. Seriously, the PS players round out the scout team and are sometimes signed because of one particular trait. That's part of the reason they rotate throughout the year. Maybe this guy is good at batting down balls or something.

Makes sense except he's on our active roster lol.  I agree 100% if he was a practice squad player though.  Practice squads are usually a few guys that they would like to develop and the rest guys that can play a myriad of roles to help the team prepare.

That's because teams aren't allowed to sign a player from a teams PS and assign them to their own PS. The only way you can sign a PS player from another team is to our teams 53 man active roster.

Yes, I'm fully aware of that...

True, but we had the opening. Bet he's inactive on game days.

I'm sure he will be as well.  Anyone we sign at this point isn't going to play unless injuries make it necessary.  I don't think Melvin would have ever played a game had we not had more injuries.

Everyone knows that. Don't be obvious.

Based on the entire thread conversation, I felt this thread could use a little bit more "obvious" inserted into it.
