CB Asa Jackson done for the year

44 posts in this topic

All the best to the man, and call it rust or whatever, but Asa wasn't playing very well, so it's not like we lost a significant cog in the defense. Our secondary was screwed the second Jimmy went down. Just stick whoever back there, and the Ravens won't be any worse off than they were when they started yesterday's game.

Let the practice squad search begin. Finding a veteran now would be hard enough, but two regular season games left? That's asking an awful lot out of any player. If anybody can pull it off it's the Raven's but dang! This is adversity personified! Still my team, still believe! Go Ravens!!

You're missing the entire point here.  Who else are we going to sign?  We've had countless opportunities to sign the guys currently on the market.  We haven't.  They are completely the same because we're in the same exact situation once again.  When we plucked Melvin off of the Bucs' PS, we were in exactly the same situation.  We were struggling for bodies, and ultimately decided that he was a better option than the older vets.  I'm fully aware that these guys will be on the active roster.  That's the entire point of plucking a guy off of someone else's PS.

The point is... we may very well sign nobody. We technically have four corners on the roster right now, which is basically the exact same number of them that we've had for most of the season. We're already using our safeties like Elam in coverage often anyway.

We didn't activate Cason for Sunday's game, which meant the team was fine with going with 4 corners last week. They will just keep Cason active on gameday this Sunday, and you're back to 4 corners again.

We might promote somebody from the PS because of Asa's injury that will surely send him to IR, but that doesn't mean we will sign another corner.

I am quite sure the practice squad search has been under way for quite some time.

The question is, who is gonna want to risk their health and well being to play on this cursed secondary?

We'll definitely add someone in the secondary with Brooks going down as well.  That leaves us with 9 total and we've mostly been going with 10 in the secondary on game days.  We've gone 9 a few times but not often.  It could be S or CB, but judging by Harbaugh's comments today, it looks like we're back in the market for a CB.

I'd honestly like to add an OL with the other spot.  I don't like only having 8 on the roster, even though we only dress 7 each game.

I made a list already on this of guys I liked at CB on other practice squads. Let me find it again.

Obviously it's not updated since some guys were activated but it's still pretty decent. I like Rod Sweeting from the Bills.

I think the best bet is to look at PS players, since free agents are likely to be very much washed up goods. PS players might have some upside.

When evaluating CBs, I'd look first at teams who aren't desperate for CB help:

Kansas City Chiefs (#2 Passing D) Deji Olatoye (former Raven; looked really, really raw this summer)

Miami Dolphins (#3 Passing D) TJ Heath, Lowell Rose.

San Francisco 49ers (#4 Passing D) Chance Casey, Marcus Cromartie

Buffalo Bills (#5 Passing D) Rod Sweeting

Minnesota Vikings (#6 Passing D) Chris Greenwood

Oakland Raiders (#7 Passing D) Ras-I-Dowling, Jansen Watson

San Diego Chargers (#8 Passing D) Richard Crawford

Detroit Lions (#10 Passing D) Trevin Wade

I guess the issue I have with this list is most of these guys are inexperienced or castaways. I think I would take a look at perhaps Ras-I-Dowlings, who was a former second round pick by the Patriots but always injured. He'd hardly be a long-term solution but perhaps a short-term patch for the season. Deji looked so raw. I'd like to suggest him because he has familiarity, but I can't say he should be here after what I saw in preseason. I suppose he's an option, though.

Other options outside the top-10:

Green Bay Packers (#11) Tay Glover-Wright

New York Giants (#12) Victor Hampton

New England Patriots (#18) Justin Green, Daxton Swanson

Indianapolis Colts (#22) Sheldon Price

Out of that list, I know and like Hampton and Price.

Rose, Sweeting, and Wade interest me.  I was interested in Marcus Cromartie but SF put him on their 53 man roster.

our secondary is made out of thin twigs

You know that sound when a movie character's trying to be quiet and they step on a twig? That's the sound our DBs make when they wake up every morning.

Whatever happened to Derek Cox? We should finally take a flyer on him

He must have been absolute garbage or maybe he is refusing to sign with Baltimore after they gave him the run around earlier in the season.
