Need some PC game recommendations

23 posts in this topic

So my mom and I have no clue what to get her husband (my stepfather) for Christmas. He likes first person shooting games, stuff like Fallout and COD and Assassin's Creed. We were thinking about Dead Rising or The Walking Dead. He's not a hardcore gamer, so it doesn't need to have Avatar-level graphics, but we do want something that'll be at least somewhat challenging, something with a good plot.

Any ideas?

Shadow of Mordor is pretty good. Is it on the PC? I want to say it is. I also heard really good things about Dragon Age Inquisition.

These could both work. How similar is Shadow of Mordor to LOTR and The Hobbit? I'm not sure he ever got into either, he's more of a zombie guy. Like, is it an obvious connection, or would someone who isn't a fan of those franchises be into it?

Maybe Metro: Last Light?

This sounds like the Russian Fallout. Yes... this could work as well...

Does anyone have any opinions on the two I mentioned? Walking Dead and Dead Rising? I read that Walking Dead isn't really interactive like most games, but I've never played it, so...

The walking dead season 1 is very good. Haven't played season 2. They are definitely less gameplay oriented than most. Much of the game is based around player choice.

Yeah, what I read was that it's more like a create-your-story novel, those "if you choose to take the path through the woods, turn to page 9" books.

Would you say it would be enjoyed by someone who's into the games he likes? He's played Fallout 3 about 50 times now beginning to end, so that's probably his favorite.

Yeah, I think those games can be enjoyed by almost anyone.

Our fear is what we pick may be too simple, especially Walking Dead after I read some reviews of it. I know there was one game he played (can't remember which) but he had it beat in like, 3 days of casual play. The ones you guys have mentioned seem a bit more complex in plot and actual interaction and game play.

Thanks for all the recommendations so far guys!! Keep 'em coming, we'll probably need them...

I'm not a fan of LOTR but I think it's a really fun game. It revolves around a separate part of the story. It's cool because it has consequences when you die. If a regular enemy kills you then they get promoted and become a higher ranking enemy and get stronger.

I also heard good things about Metro. You might want to check Evil Within or Wolfenstein. They might fit your criteria as well.

I'm a huge fan of the fallout games, hated the walking dead. Walking dead isn't a shooter, it's a "point and click" adventure type game. Luckily I only got the demo, but if he doesn't like the point and click games, he probably won't like it either.

Stalker was a good game. Although the difficulty at certain points was pretty nasty.

So no shooting zombies or anything? Hmm.

You guys are giving me a LONG list of options here. I loves it.

If you want to keep him occupied, get him Dragon Age Inquisition.  That kept me busy for a while, and go through things quickly.

You're now the third out of everyone I've asked to recommend this one. Do you need to play the first three to understand it?

I think there is shooting, but it's not like a first person shooter.

And dragon age is an RPG, not a shooter. Awesome game though, that's what I'm playing now.

Wow, just thought of two of the greatest zombie killing games! Left for dead and left for dead 2. Can't go wrong with either.
