Rashaan Melvin

I like Melvin. Like others, I think it's too early to crown him but he does have a lot of nice qualities. He's a pretty big CB. He also has a year of experience on a PS and additional time this year as well. I'll wait until the end of the season before coming to a true conclusion on him.

If I do recall, Perrish Cox who is a stud right now, went through similar things that our CB's went through. He was picked up, cut, picked up, cut. Plenty of times, in fact Cox was released by Seattle a day after he was signed. Cox had a lot to go through, he was cut for a practice squad member....

I think the opportunity is there for Melvin, he just has to capitalize, like Perrish, this is his chance.

If he can play as "replacement Jimmy' for this season he should earn a position with "Top Jimmy" in the next.  (Top Jimmy   Van Halan  >One of the best songs they ever created)

Honestly thought he played a pretty solid game. Looks like a gem so far. He went against Johnson and Hopkins and held his own. And he's a willing tackler.

Yep not too bad. He's obviously not perfect but I think he did well considering who he had to cover and the fact that the defense as a whole was constantly on the field. He's certainly looked a whole hell of a lot better than the other guys we've been sending out there.

I think he played well.  He also made it through a whole game without getting hurt, so that's a plus.

Very important quality for this team, sadly.

Yeah, he's looked good so far and there's decent reason to be excited about his potential now that he hasn't just faced some average WRs whose QB was running for his life.

Melvin is a good football player. I like him and I'd be comfortable knowing he's around next season.

Word. Do we have him for the rest of his rookie contract now that he's on the 53-man roster? Or how does that work?

He's rolling on a 1 year contract but he'll be an ERFA, meaning that essentially, we have him under contract.

So long-term, something good came out of our secondary play this year. Wooo!

If I'm not mistaken that's the last year we have him.

Should be a restricted FA next season I believe...

After next season though.  Same as Marlon Brown.  I think it's only 3 years of RFA.  But I'm not sure about that.

Correct. But its far too early to be talking about long-term extension talks with him anyway, so retaining him on a cheap deal for another season makes plenty of season.

I expect he will certainly be facing better competition for a playing role than he has this season, however.

He seems like a good use of a roster spot though.  Can't he play STs as well?

He looks like a keeper. He competed yesterday and contests catches unlike some of his backfield mates. I think there may be something to build on with him.

Honestly, its getting hard to judge. I haven't seen him play alongside other quality corners really, so the comparison is tough. He appears to be an upgrade over a lot of the guys we've started this year, but that's not really saying much.

I'm looking forward to bringing another corner or two into the team in the offseason and getting a nice healthy competition going.

Had to bring this thread back up after today. I was at the game today and tried to focus on some Rashaan to see if this guy was actually doing anything or if it was just pure excitement in comparison to what weve had this year. I've got to say I dont think hes the second coming of Jimmy, but he is absolutely more than just being better than what we've had. He made some legitimate breaks on wide receivers and was a willing tackler and attacked guys. I'm not saying im confident but he does seem to be a guy that the Ravens should look into resigning because he has promise. Seems like a hard worker and hasn't been as up and down, but more consistent, than what we've seen from many of the replacements.

Also this is probably blasphemy at this point on these boards, but Elam actually played pretty well today. Still pisses me off how he celebrates like crazy after every tiny play he makes, but he was active and a sound tackler today for the most part from what I saw

You're right. Elam played very well today. I'm really hopeful that the trend continues.
