Rashaan Melvin

I think it's unlikely that you use a fourth round pick on a player knowing that teams wanted him in the early fifth and expect him to make it through waivers.

0% chance Walker is a PS player.

Agree - I think Asa Jackson will have an uphill climb to save the roster spot.

I think it's between he and Vaughn for a roster spot. If i'm not mistaken, Vaughn also has return experience. We also have to remember that Asa Jackson can be placed on PS if he's not performing up to par.

Dark Horse of the season, I'm telling you guys, he's either taking Webbs job by the time the seasons over or he's pushing Arrington back. Either way, I expect something from him this year.

Not 100% positive, but I don't believe players are eligible for the Practice Squad in their 4th seasons (Asa has appeared in 14 career games and I think the limit is 9 regular season games).

Not sure if Rashaan is "the guy" but he has what I think Ozzie/Harbs are looking for in DBs these days and that is length. Todays WR/TEs are mostly in the 6'0" to 6'6" range and are chewing up the little DBs. Melvin, Smith, Waller, Trawick, Hill are the over 6', new age DBs. Many, maybe most, of this years draft DBs were 6' and over. So I think that's the trend in the NFL to counter the taller, bigger receivers.

wow this thread is ridiculous. melvin is an undrafted corner at best. hes used as a band aid, thats it.

Melvin had some spectacular moments last year once he started to play.  He was exposed some against Brady and the Pats, but to say "he's a band aid" is definitely undervaluing him.

For a second year player with pretty much no experience, he played better than any of the other corners (outside Webb and Smith) last year.  I think as a 4th corner entering his third year, he provides excellent depth and already some solid experience at the position.

Josh Bynes was placed on PS last season(2014) after joining the team in 2011. Last season was his 4th season and he had 26 games played and 9 games started at that point.

The CBA implemented a new rule regarding players eligible for PS. Don't really remember the exact language of the rule. But basically it's only for a couple years and it'll be up for negotiations after this season. It basically allows teams to keep young developing players longer. I think much like the IR with a return designation it's only applicable to one player per season.

I forgot all about the Rashaan Melvin hype train since we signed Kyle Arrington. He's definitely more than a band aid.He kind of reminds me of a mixture between Cary Williams and Jimmy Smith. He has Williams' athleticism with Jimmy's stockier/stronger build.I think he might be our next Cary Williams and when I say that I mean a tall lanky late round draft pick from another team that comes here and gets developed. He was solid until that pats game.I don't hold that game against him too much because he was beaten by guys like Gonk and Lafell who are both pretty good players and they had a Hall of Fame QB throwing to them.I can't wait to see how he's improved in the pre season.I'm hoping we're lucky enough to not have to use him during the reg season so I'm not planning on seeing him then.

Lafell is not that good.

The league is filled with undrafted starters/role players.  Just b/c he went undrafted doesn't mean he can't be a quality player.

Melvin arguably was the best CB on the field 3 out of 4 his starts.

Considering that he played pretty solid for The Ravens after Danny Gorrer and Asa Jackson went down and even played pretty well against The Steelers in the playoffs. The Steelers offense was really good last year and Melvins only bad game I can think of was against The Patriots which is understandable.

I honestly think any rookie cornerback would make mistakes like Melvin did when facing a future hall of fame quarterback like Tom Brady.

thats not saying much, considering our secondary was absolutely horrid. also, look who we played and how bad we were the last few games last season. people seem to forget the end of the season we were not playing well. then the steelers game we stepped up defensively due to our front seven. when the pats came out, they took advantage of him baaaadly.

the last 2 games of the season we played against a 3rd string QB..

Melvin got exposed for his weaknesses against Brady, but we saw more than enough from his other games to be able to say that there is room for growth there.

Money talks Webb would have to play really really bad for Melvin to start over him.. I still think Webb one of the better starting corner in the league  when healthy and same probably can be said about Kyle Arrington(as a  nickel corner only). Unless Webb or Arrington are playing really bad or get injured I expect for them to see the field alot this year . No way they going to get bench with the kind of money they are making .

Melvin will still see the field though but probably not as much as he did last year.

Guys, melvin was on a practice squad and went undrafted. He played pretty damn well considering. The person who said he will never be relevant obviously hasnt watched Melvin enough to fairly judge him. What people fail to realize is that Melvin was pushed into the fire at a young age with barely any game time experience. As a starter! If hes this good now, just wait until he gets the proper coaching and mechanics down. Hes definately got the size. Imagine him and Jimmy Smith. That would probably be the two tallest duo CB's. I didnt want this post to be this long but cmon give Melvin some time. If he played that well for a new team with no game time experience then he will be alot better. Just watch.

we've all seen melvin play. hes nothing great. physical corner up front, but gets beat often. hes decent for 2nd or 3rd string play.

We've seen him play a grand total of 5 games.  There's no reason to believe he's some finished product at this point.  He's good depth for now with the potential to grow into something better.  Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't.  That's something the coaches will evaluate.

Melvin is a #4 CB at the moment. Which is something we oh so desperately need. Never can have enough CBs.

There are no doubts in my mind that if we had even Jimmy Smith back that we would've beaten the patriots. We added more guys. Melvin will have a role. #4 guy while Arrington, Jimmy, and Webb hold the fort. He's valuable depth.

So true. It took him a week to get the playbook down and execute it. That's very impressive considering his inexperience and age. People shouldn't be so quick to judge because he went undrafted for being at a small-school prospect. Brent Grimes went undrafted and look where he is now.

I CALLED IT!

Maybe a little too early to determine that.  Lardarius isn't playing b/c he didn't pass his conditioning test.  Hopefully he can get on the field ASAP so we can fully compare the two players.

I don't know what you called.  But I find it hard to call anything after 1/2 day of training camp.

It's like calling a desert the best ever after it's brought to the table, and you haven't even tasted it yet.

You do realize after Webb passes his conditioning test, Melvin drops to the #4CB spot at best?

Granted I like Melvin and hope he makes the 53, but I think you're a little premature on Melvin taking Webb's spot

a few hours into the 1st practice.

I called Webb having issues this offseason and Melvin being given a chance to show that he's good. Reports are saying Melvins doing good. Edited by Cillmatic
