Rashaan Melvin

i remember all the things we could find negative about chykie. jackson. jimmy smith of the past. webb. every person in the secondary has been complained about recently... melvin i have zero complaints. i've seen only good things.

Melvin's been good but let's not act like he is playing pro bowl level. He is playing well, but it's not like he's great yet.

He's doing enough that our defense has settled back down into being scary good and if I'm not mistaken he's been avoided in the last two games we've played. I'm not saying he's a pro bowler but next year we should have a really good competition for our CB spots. I could definitely see him being our number 3 db with Smith and Webby starting, and Webb kicking inside to slot when all 3 are on the field.

Melvin is doing enough. He hasn't really had a full offseason or any thing of that nature. Signed and thrown into the game.

I hope (as everyone would agree) he becomes the next Jimmy Smith without the injury history. I know Pees would be giddy to have a healthy Jimmy and an improved Melvin.

I don't know about Jimmy Smith but he could be similar to Cary which would be very nice.

Similar to Cary isn't all that nice. It was a love/hate relationship with Cary.

It was but expecting Melvin to be Jimmy Smith is too optimistic. I'd say at least we wait till he has a full offseason to work with the team. I feel like he can be another gem like Corey Graham.

There was frustrations with Cary as well, but come playoff time, he stepped it up.

Cary was asked to play off his man by 10 yards. No CB is just going to automatically play off that far without  guidance from the DC. That's an assignment, likely done to mitigate Cary's weaknesses. Cary is a good CB but he is prone to quite a few mistakes as well. I like him as a #2 CB, but I never liked his attitude; although I suppose that moxie helped make him who he is  today.

I think Melvin has some real potential. He could be another Marlon Brown, although I would temper expectations some on the "Jimmy Smith without the injuries" because Melvin has his own injury history as well.

As would I, because I believe a healthy Jimmy can play at All Pro level.

That's not the only reason I'd temper that expectation. :P

Elam is probably the worst of the entire secondary. He is a huge disappointment. Melvin has potential, but I need to see him play more. He was injured in the Steelers game but came back. It's to bad Jimmy Smith and Asa Jackson are hurt, I would feel really good about this game if they were healthy. Especially Smith he was at the point in his career where he was playing great

Elam certainly needs to get better in coverage, that is for sure.

Yea. I'm still not ready to give up on him. For some reason it seems like he came to the league and had to totally re-learn how to play football, but given that fact he really is improving. He needs to improve his coverage but now that we don't need him to start, I think he has time to develop into the guy that will take over for Stewart/Miles when they inevitably move on.

Elam is much better playing close to the line of scrimmeage, like a plus linebacker.

If he improve his coverage skills, he could be a Mini Chancellor.

And about Melvin: what a good surprise. Totally didn't expect he playing at this level (being an undrafted and sophomore, thrown into the fire). I hope he can keep this pace and grow to become part of this secundary for a long time.

has been in the league for 2 years... everyone has been talking about how long it typically takes cbs to develop... ie: jimmy... this guy is ballin out for a guy limited to practice squad reps and very short time with this team. he reminds me more of webb than jimmy.

Melvin wasn't flash today, but he made a few plays and could have been worse considering we pinched him off the Bucs' [of all teams] practice squad three weeks ago.

I'm still all for keeping him if we can.

He didn't play very well today vs the Patriots.  Many missed tackles that turned into 1st Downs & TDs.  All in all, he was a replacement taken off a practice squad.  We didn't even belong in the Playoffs with all the injuries we sustained this season.  Team better draft people for the secondary, they needed to in the last draft but didn't.

That's crap. He was the only sure tackler in the defensive backfield . He didn't get safety help over the top at all. The guy played a decent CB

I think he missed one tackle all game.  He was pretty solid.  He did get beat on that play after their cinched him up to the line, but he did what they asked him to do:  Play off receivers and make tackles.

Melvin missed a single tackle all game and got beat on that deep one with no safety help. All in all, played decent game considering what he was asked to do.

He'll be a great depth piece next year but he still has no business being a starter yet.

This.  He's done pretty well overall, but he's not a guy you count on to be a consistent cog just yet.  I'm encouraged by what he's done but today was a rough one for him.
