Worst Qb to start in a superbowl?

21 posts in this topic

Who is the worst QB in your opinion to start in a superbowl? Some people like to say trent dilfer wasn't that great but he was hardly the worst or anything and he didn't give his team an awful abundance of super bowl mistakes. To me rex grossman for the chicago bears was the worst QB to start a superbowl. Any decent QB would have wont he bears that title with their special teams and defense.

Recently, Grossman's hard to argue with - him or Jake Delhomme.

As to the worst ever, probably some obscure bloke from the 70s.

I couldn't go back that far remembering all the names lol. Recent I would say rex, I actually though delhomme was quite decent in carolina when they constantly made the playoffs.

I'll say that in this opinion-based answer, I'm leaning away from actual Super Bowl winning QBs, since that distinction means something in itself.

The 70s really had a lot of the same QBs show up year in and year out, so that kind of success means something. Growing up in Philly, I always heard how terrible Jaworski was by frustrated and spiteful Eagles fans, so I'll mention him, but I think David Woodley of Miami is the worst of that decade. In the 90s it's between Frank Reicht (when Kelly was hurt) and Stan Humprhies of the Chargers and Chris Chandler of the Falcons. However, I tend to agree with Grossman. As mediocre as he was for his career, that year wasn't even his best. Pretty poor.

Joe Namath. His career QB rating was 65.5, thats below Trent Dilfers for cryin' out loud! His SB year completion percentage was below 50%. How this guy rated a HOF bid is beyond me.

Played in NY, beating U & the Colts in the Super Bowl, and his famous "Guarantee"

All I got.

And was a college star at Bama. Got him to be the highest paid player in the league as a rookie I believe.

Rex Grossman although there have been worse performances by QBs in a SB, which is a different conversation.

Going from what my pops says, he was actaul a good qb and with pretty a pretty sharp football iq. Heard it was injuries that hurt his career. As for Delhomme, he was an above average qb when they made it to the SB and a had a decent run as field general.

I personally think one of the lost overrated qbs ever is Bradshaw, but can't call him the worst. Probably comes down to Rex or Trent.

Big Ben has to be one of the worst to win it.

Worst performance by a winner most definitely. Hard to argue he played worse overall, though, when Rich Gannon threw like 43 interceptions against the Bucs, a lot of which were run back for six.

Yea not the worst qb, but an awful performance. Gannon wasn't put in a position to succeed that game. Really wasn't all too fair.

I hate hearing all those controversies about the game being tanked by the staff. I just hope it isn't true. I really thought the Raiders had that one going in.

And to be fair, he didn't really beat U. He was injured and didn't start the SB game. He was only brought in on the final 2 drives out of desperation to try and put some points on the board.

As far as the game goes it might be Kerry Collins. Granted it was against a great defence but 112 yds, 4 ints, and 0 points is about as bad as it gets.

I think Delhomme actually has one of, if not the highest, qb ratings of a losing qb. 16 of 33, 323 yds, 3 td, 0 int.

If we're talking worst QB performances, I think Tony Eason failed to complete a pass,  and Earl Morrell threw 3 picks against 6 pass completions.
