What Do Other Teams Fear Most About the Ravens?

64 posts in this topic

I know most cats in here can't stand Mike Preston, but I liked what he said about the Ravens on Touchdown Baltimore......

"Here's the problem that I have with the Ravens.  You go into December, you're looking for something that you can put your hat on.  Something that you say that they do special, that they're better than anyone else.  I mean, you look at Denver-Peyton Manning!  Uhh...Indianapolis has Luck.  Green Bay has Aaron Rodgers; Buffalo, Miami and Seattle is starting to play great defense again!

And you look at the Ravens and say, "What do they do well?  What do they do that's going to take them through the post-season and to the Super Bowl?  I can't find it!  I mean; you can say; "Oh, their running game-but then when you look at their ineffectiveness inside the redzone, you say; "Wooo, I'm not afraid of this!  There is nothing there that puts fear in other teams!

And, until I see this, or something that I can put my hat on; they won't be a good football team!  They'll be an average football team in a league filled with average teams.  And their competitive-but until they get those playmakers and this talent; umm, they're not there!"

Put aside your hatred and disdain for the man and address the content of his statement.  What is it about this present Ravens team (not the team(s) from yester-year) that you think puts fear in other teams?

The Ravens have issues but are well balanced.  Some people mistake that for average and it carried them to a SB in 2012.  He neglects to mention the dominance of the front 7 and that the offense is scoring more now than ever.  Can it be better?  Sure.  But Mr.s Preston has oversimplified a more complex matter.

Our mascot?

And the pool pics in the game threads.

Dunno what Mike Preston's saying about how we have nothing to hang our hats on. ;)

I think Mike is looking for the Superstar impact probowl player that's head and shoulders the best on the team......We don't have that. However It's not like teams dont have to gameplan against, Joe, Forsett, Smitty, Torrey and have to find a way to netrualize the pass rush (Pees can probably do that himself). I see what Mike is saying though.

Yeah our front seven is no joke. Might be the best in the NFL, all bias aside.

But anywho...I don't think that as a team we do any one thing exceptionally well, other than stopping the run. We do a lot of things very, very effectively though.

HA! That should be more than enough!

I agree that we have nothing to hang our hat on, but the notion that we need that one special thing to make it through the playoffs is laughable, stupid, pathetic, ridiculous, and just flat out wrong. What did we do special in 2012? Average run game, below average pass game, mediocre defense. Yet we win a Super Bowl. Sure the passing game heated up in the playoffs, but it wasn't there all season.

You don't need to hang your hat on one thing. I find it sorta funny that Preston mentions that Denver has Manning, the perennial playoff choke artist, as the one great thing they can hang their hat on to get to the Super Bowl. You need to be good at several things, and Denver is a good example of that. They have one great thing and not much else.

We might not have that one thing to hang our hat on, but we have a good (maybe great) run game, a good passing game (if WRs show up) and a great front seven.

Our run game is beast and our front 7.

Pretty much this, our run game has been great this year and it has really helped us become one of the best offenses in the league. Sadly I think our secondary is so bad that I don't think we can make a run but if we do anything in the playoffs it will be because the run game and Flacco catching fire again of course.

Without reading too much into your thread Mili.....if I was an opposing team's coach I'd say, 'Dang.....we're gonna have to contain that Flacco,' because the bottom line is if we get hot it's because Joe's hot streak continues.  Despite our loss to the Bolts, Joe looked as hot as I've ever seen the guy.  He read everything the right way and if the SUBPAR (yes, that was all in caps on purpose) receiving corps. could get their collective *stuff* together, we might actually win more games.

Make no mistake: if Joe continues playing like he has and the receivers actually catch some *cough* balls, we're still in the position to make a dang run.

Justin+Tucker+Cincinnati+Bengals+v+Balti

Definitely Justin Tucker.

Only quoted for pic, Tucker is a monster. But my answer to the OP, ou r run defense. It's not so much that a run stopping team is scarry, but rather it sends the message "you better believe your QB can carry you guys."

The Raven said it all

Preston must have a short memory because it was only 2012 that our brand of 'doing lots of things well' went out and beat the "scary" teams on the way to the championship.

I see a lot of you mentioning our front seven, but how come they didn't abuse San Diegos line with starting 4th and 5th centers? I agree our front seven is awesome I'm not implying there not, but we should of had way more pressure and sacks sunday.

My thoughts are, teams fear,,

that our coaches will coach,

ie;     game plan, game adjustments, leave pierce and elam out and put in LT or brooks, not blowing  TIMEOUTS,

that pretty much sums it up,

we have a good team as bad as we were last year,we could have made the playoffs, allot of people, all gave them a pass last year, not me,

To be honest, the front 7 and o-line are still tough, scrappy guys that will leave you bruised. They are still something to fear.

I'd rather do everything well than be the best at one thing, being the best at one thing/having one superstar isn't how you win football games. It takes a team to win it all. When's the last time a completely unbalanced team won it all? Us in 2000 maybe? Sounds like the guy who wrote that only cares about the fantasy points, not the actual football

But those guys don't put up fantasy points and to this guy that's all that matters

In the playoffs? A superbowl winning quarterback would be nice.

Maybe a receiver who can get deep on anybody.

If only we had this annoying habit of winning when everyone else counts us out...

Come on Mili! What was scary about us in 2012?? NOTHING! We've never had scary anything except defense in the past. I just don't think what Mike is getting at has any merit.

What's scary about the Ravens? The fact that nothing scares you and they can turn it on at any point and be the best team in football and compete with anybody.

We're only 1 or two bad injuries removed from being an elite team, and even in our wounded state I heard Miami radio people talking about how scared they are because the Ravens are dangerous when desperate and they have Joe Flacco

I respectfully disagree!  I didn't take that "one special thing" statement of Preston's so literally as you or most may have done.  What I read into that is; "What is it about the Ravens gameplay that makes them stick out over other teams?"  Then, he gives a generic response to that about Manning, Luck and Rodgers for their teams.  Of course, we all know that you need more than just one player and quite a few other things to be clicking with your team to be a playoff juggernaut and Super Bowl contender.  And yet, each team does have a "distinctive" quality to it that sets it apart from other teams.  Besides, to try to compare this present Ravens team in any way to the accomplishments of that 2012 Super Bowl Ravens team is a waste of time imo cause they are not the same...at all!

Well, Pollard WAS scary.

Scared other teams he was gonna injure somebody. Scared me he was gonna cost us another 15 yds on some dumb penalty.

Mike Preston scares me.

I like the fact that Preston doesn't give typical homer answers where the Ravens are concerned.

Baltimore under pressure is scary.  Not a mild "we need this game or it's tough sledding from here" pressure.  I mean end of the road, do or die pressure.  I don't see many teams play as well as Baltimore when it's all or nothing.
