[News] Late For Work 12/2: Can Asa Jackson Help Save Secondary?

90 posts in this topic

I agree with Sarah about Asa: he almost surely won't be a saviour - but we need all the help in the secondary. Everybody hamemring Levine now, don't forget that he isn't a CB, he's a S who has to play at CB.

I believe the help this secondary needs most has to come from our coaching staff !

When the linemen are bringing the heat and you know the opposing QB'S is going to go for curl routs to the sidelines to counter, why would you have DB'S lining up ten yard off the line ? We need to stop this bend don't break crap, and start playing some AFC North smash mouth football...!

if the ravens can keep this team intact next year and rebuild the secondary and pick up a tight end either in free agency or the draft, they should be in good shape next year.this year it won't happen, thye secondary is too bad.

Pees came from Patriots where this bend but don't works when your offense is probably going to score 30 a game or the division has Bills, Jets, Dolphins, that usually don't score a bunch of points. It does not work for the Ravens. I will he doesn't have much talent to work with , but Ravens drafted defense in the first 3 rounds 2 years in row so he had an opportunity to get what he thought his system would need. Our pass defense has been at the bottom since he took over.

@bozo, i agree with on that, if they keep this team intact we'll be SB contender next year, because of depth that we have with exception at CB position right now.

even now, if we make it to the playoffs, no one wants to face us even with secondary we have.

C'mon Jets! You had that one. New York had the lead over the Miami Dolphins for three quarters, but allowed 10 fourth-quarter points to allow the Dolphins to rally from behind for a 16-13 victory.

^ First, you can NEVER count on another team to "help" you out cause oftentimes...THEY DON'T! And secondly, "C'mon Jets? You had that one?"  Are you serious?  How soon you forget!  How about "C'mon Ravens! You had that one?"  Smh!  Watching this Jets game (minus the Jets lack of passing and scoring 3 TD's) this game was deja-vu. The Ravens did the exact same thing vs. the Chargers on Sunday.  They led most of the way and then gave the game away in the last few minutes. Pathetic!  SMH!

Am I the only one who thinks that MOST of the Ravens problems rest on the coaching staff? The last 2 seasons we have heard nothing but excuses for the Ravens poor play and short comings. Meanwhile the offensive line was terrible last season, and the defense has not performed for a whole game in 2 seasons now. Sorry, but I think it's time to start pointing fingers at the head coach and his coaches.

Did anyone hear the comments of Tony Dungy & Rodney Harrison on the Sunday Night football telecast? They did not blame Levine for that PI they blamed Pees for putting him in that position. Pees has these guys playing way to far off the ball, he has to give them a chance to make a play. And why after using W. Hill to defend the best TE in the game right now in J. Graham did Pees not put him on Gates in passing situations? He had C. Upshaw playing Gates on a third down play. What in the world was he thinking? I have been saying it for over 2 yrs now, Pees and his bend but don't break defense has got to go.

we are depending on our defensive line to get to the QB and they are doing a pretty good job. They problem is that when the QB is already in the shotgun and the receiver is running a 3-5yard route that's a completion. Then it's extremely hard to get to the QB when they offense lines up in a MAX protect formation and we only rush 4. We have Safeties playing CB and LB(matt elam I know what he's being paid to do but he is trash in coverage) playing Safety. Secondary is a dumpster fire. The two guy that are solid can't stay healthy. We should win out still but it's just hard to watch.

The Ravens should paid Corey Graham and Cary Williams instead of being cheap. Jimmy Smith and Ladarius Webb are never healthy and now they have a bunch of players that couldn't even back up the backups on other teams.

I don't really care much about the Hill not covering Gates situation, because you aren't going to be very successful in the long-run in this league if you're got your FS playing man to man on a TE. The moment a QB sees that, he knows he's got mostly man coverage, which means its easy for a Rivers to beat man coverage against bad corners with guys like Allen, Floyd and Royal at WR.

They could have taken Gates out of the game, and I have no doubt the Chargers would have just completed more passes to other guys.

Frankly, the Ravens weren't any better or worse in the Chargers game in the secondary than they were against Brees and the Saints. The only real difference was 3rd down defense and red zone defense. They were serviceable in those areas against Brees, and they were horrible in those areas against Rivers.

I'm wondering who gets cut when Asa Jackson comes back?

Probably not a drafted guy like Brooks or Elam. Can't believe Ravens coaches actually believe you can stick a safey on a WR with success. Every pre-game show I watch states QBs look for mismatch of Safeties on receivers or LBs on TEs yet this seems to be the Ravens game plan. I hope they keep a corner, but none of those guys can are good.

Flacco posted the second highest quarterback rating for a losing team this season. Don't blame this one on the offense. The Ravens defense needs to stop playing deep zones with their cornerbacks, with small quick receivers they easily find holes in the zones and that ends up giving them way too many easy catches.

I don't know. Teams have had trouble defending them all season long, yet they are 6-6.

Don't count us out just yet! We must still play Miami and beating the 'phins would be huge because we may flip position with them depending on what others do!

If we lose though,... Rex Ryan won't be the only H.C. with a hang-dog look!

Those who blame Pees for our shortcomings are wrong. When you don't have any corners and have to get guys off the street, it hampers what you can do. Leeson learned do not enter a season with just 3-4 CBs. NFL is a passing league duh. But keep 7 safties who of which can't cover anything.

I think coaching is definitely part of the problem but I believe there is a bigger issue. The Ravens are not as talented as a lot of teams. Part of this is because when you get to the playoffs 5 years in a row, play in 3 AFC championship games, etc.. you are drafting near the bottom, your free agents are coveted by other teams so you either have to spend more or let them go, the teams you were beating up were drafting near the top and keeping their players under contract. Now add to that poor decision by the Ravens on who to cut/trade (Boldin, Pollard), who they drafted (Cody , Kindle , Reid, etc), injuries, and being passive in the draft and cheap in free agency (maybe unavoided due to salary cap) and what you end up with is a team that's better than the bad teams but can beat the good teams.

Man I feel bad for Rex Ryan! I think part of him is still a Raven. He wanted to beat the Dolphins knowing that would help the Ravens, just as his team beat the Steelers a few weeks back. I feel for the guy.

pees is too passive and that's Y the pats let him go, rivers wasn't pressured at all, no creativity at all,

That is my problem with Pees, no creativity. Organized chaos scares qb's not that vanilla defense we run every Sunday. Change things up for Pete sake.
