Third Receiver...

12 posts in this topic

I'm not taking Jacksonville lightly but all signs point to a win tomorrow. What I'm a little worried about is the team's lack of a third wide receiver. Heap seems to have lost a step and although he can still move the chains, he isn't the threat he once was. Marcus Smith has yet to catch a pass and Yamon is not wide receiver material. I want Derrick Mason to go over 1000 yards on the season and he could probably do it with Rashean Mathis out. Still, I think this is a good game to see what the team has in Marcus Smith, Terrance Copper or even Ernie Wheelwright.

What do you guys think?

well ernie wheelwright is not on the team anymore so that is out
but id like to see Clayton as the number one as smith as the two to see how they handle the roles especillay clayton as the number one, he stepped up last week

I'd like to see Figures in there as the 3rd wideout. Derrick Mason, Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El, Steve Smith, and plenty other good, small, speedy wide outs started off returning kicks. He may not be krazy enough to be a good kick returner, lol.

Yamon hasn't proven he is WR quality. Being fast is one thing, but running routes and catching footballs is another. He's been in this year and has only one touchdown, in fact his only reception...of which it was primarily blown coverage. So it's clear his skills aren't nearly as complete as other WR's in the league. Can he improve? Damn straight, but as of right now, he's turned into the early Reggie Bush: speed only. Reggie figured out that speed wont cut it in the NFL, because everyone is fast. But adding just one other skill like agility, strength, route running or amazing catch ability, any one of those, would make him a serious threat. tbh, his return capability isn't even any good anymore. He must have lost that agile look he had last year, if he were to get it back and add the ability to catch balls in traffic to his resume, I'd be excited.
Heap has been busy blocking from some teams with a great pass rush..
Dido..Heap's strength is route running not blocking. Sooner or later Cam will realize Heap need to be utilized appropriately. But that is a post for for another discussion.

1st Mark Clayton
2nd Marcus Smith
3rd Mason nope, Demetrius nope, we are out of wide outs guess we'll have to figure something out.

Heap has not lost his step, he's open about 70% of the pass plays he's on.

Joe in my eyes will officially mature (not to take away from the great rookie he is) when he realizes he has a an offensive threat in Todd Heap.

I am not so worried about a 3rd reciever tomorrow if Ray Rice plays because he gives us that extra recieving option. I also have alot of confidence that Wilcox could line-up at wideout if all else fails, we dont use him much but he's dependable.
