The only thing I can think of is that the ref actually called PI on the first contact on Steve Smith, and not in the end zone.

 

But I'm pretty sure the ball wasn't in the air when SSS was illegally contacted down the field, so it should have been PI in the end zone and we should have gotten the ball on the 1 yard line.
