Steve and Torrey

34 posts in this topic

So watching the game last night I wanted to see if anyone else thinks that Steve has started rubbing off on Torrey. Last night his routes were crisp and he seemed on the same page as Joe unlike Earlier this season. Also in my opinion he played with an edge I haven't seen before mixing it up with the DB. So did anyone else notice this last night.

Torrey has been groomed by Boldin and Smitty.  It was only a matter of time till he started adding grit to his play

Hate to be a naysayer, but this is the last year of Torrey's rookie contract. I think he's gonna be what he is for the rest of his career: that is a burner who will make a bomb catch and then disappear for a good while. In other words, if you expect him to fight for the ball more, that just isn't him. A lot like jacoby in that aspect.

Torrey is 25 , to say he can't improve from here is ridiculous.

Perhaps so, but its possible (though I think unlikely) that he "improves" with another team.

That's the thing about the NFL... you're really only given a maximum of 3-4 years to prove what you are.

What I really liked is how Steve said last night that he is learning from Torrey as well...  I like the fire.  Steve seemed to light that spark last night... on a lot of the offensive players.

ive seen torrey very often look like he is holding back some attitude, almost like a bullied kid who gets a pissed off look on his face and just gives a little nudge back to his bully, when a defender makes contact with him out of bounds he does this almost every time, but he actually seemed to playing with some fire last night, like when he missed a chance to turn a nice play into a big time touchdown, he wasnt like "aww man next time" he was legitimately pissed off as if they have no business stopping his big play.

i dont think its a trend though to be honest, torrey is one of the true good guys in this league, he is revered for his high character and is probably the most friendly/happy go lucky person on this team, obviously in a very tense game such as last nights, people are gonna get a little more fired up than usual, but i dont think he does it regularly.

also i dont think its that torrey hasnt been running routes, i think its that he hasnt been used properly and consistently, those intermediate hook route are DANGEROUS with a guy like torrey, the db is always scared of the wheels when they are man up on torrey, when he starts to show that 2nd gear 10 yards downfield, that db starts taking off, then bang, stop and turn, suddenly torrey has 10 yards seperation. its something i have been wanting to see more often for quite some time, along with more plays designed to get torrey open on drag routes, he can be just as, if not more dangerous, with those high percentage throws that get him into open space, than with those deep balls that he doesnt have the skillset to "go up and get"

Torry fighting for yards after catch was a treat to see.

Yes Yes Yes.

They have been throwing to torrey in the short and intermediate. His performance was just magnified because of YAC. Ive never questioned torrey's speed.i just wondered if he was elusive, which is a totally different trait. Last game, he showed some elusiveness. To convince me he is worth big bucks, I need to see it consistently(against  good corners as well).

just throwing to him and using him in an effective manner are 2 different things, they set him up for success last night, steve lit it up early, and we didnt waste any time switching focal points when they began to key in on steve, they saw the opportunities for torrey to be effective without risking incompletions on low percentage throws, and they took advantage. steve smith bracketed? run a drag, heavy blitz coming with steve bracketed? slant, stacked box and CB playing off coverage? deep hook, they put him in much better situations last night, and he responded with the best game weve seen from him in quite some time. hopefully the offense as a whole can build on that and we can finally find some consistency in our passing game with more than one WR playing good football

Torrey: Damn, I got held from getting to the ball, but I'll try to avoid him next time.

Steve: what!? He took your money!

Torrey: Money what? he held me....

Steve: He took your lunch money! Nobody takes my lunch money! Anybody bullied me from getting the ball is personally took my lunch money...NOBODY! you hear me Torrey!

Torrey: My lunch money!? hell no! I'm pissed off.....

Torrey has run those routes and simply lost the matchup against the corner. We've been facing a lot of stacked boxes and the hook route from torrey has been very hit or miss. last game, he looked uncoverable because his playing style changed.

Torrey Smith is an outside wide receiver. in our WCO, he is supposed to run precise routes and get open quickly. Low percentage throws,I take it you mean "deep bombs", are almost exclusive to play action in this offense. This aint the cam cameron ravens. Against the blitz, in a 1 on 1 coverage situation, torrey is supposed to win. The bottom line is he won last night because he played aggressive. I dont know what you mean by effective but  I cant fathom kubiak does not know how to counter a blitz with all his experience. I dont think torrey is made to run 1 route every game. He is used on various routes that therefore uses him as a receiver. He just has not capitalized on plays against 1 on 1 press coverage. Was he even pressed in this game?

It was great seeing some fire in Torrey but I'm gonna wait before I start celebrated his success. The Saints have one of the worst secondaries in the league. Even worse than the Ravens' secondary has been. I want to see if we can have this fired up, beating defensive backs Torrey Smith against the Dolphins, Texans, and Browns.

Just after SSS's score, I think while they were waiting to see if the TD was confirmed, there was a brief moment on the TV coverage of Steve "Passionately Speaking" to a group of players, directly in front of him and really focused on him was Torrey. I'd love to hear what he said, but it sure looked like Torrey was playing angry after that.

I know Torrey is the nicest guy in football, but, outside of the game, it looks like Steve Smith is a good guy too, if he can teach young smith to be able to be nice Torrey off the field and nasty Torrey on it he will have been worth his contract already.

More than that, I think Steve's fire is rubbing off on Torrey. It's good to see him pissed off for greatness.

I love that Ray Lewis quote..."Cause I'm pissed off for greatness. To hell with being good"

And true to your post as well.

about the good guy high character deal you can still be a good guy but have a fire play pissed off whatever. I liked what I saw I agree about the routes I loved the slant off the blitz if he makes 1 guy miss he could be going to the house take advantage of the speed and big play ability on a high percentage throw

I thought of the same thing. It's definitely a quote I try to remember. It's a true statement. That quote definitely came to mind as I read this thread lol.

Torrey comes so close to breaking every slant.. I have no idea why they aren't trying that route a minimum of 3 times a game every game...

McPhee drew double teams almost every time he was rushing inside... Made it so easy for Suggs/doom

Tv prolly didn't do justice to just how many ravens fans were there

Pees had a great gameplan to slow down graham.. Saints had him everywhere on the field but couldn't consistently get to him

Yes, he definitely played with an attitude at the Saints game. I was down there and I saw him more fired up than I have in a LONG time. Certainly more than anytime this season. He looked different. Particularly the play when he caught it by the sideline, stiff armed the DB and took off for a first down. He looked fierce!!! We need that Torrey consistently.

Lunch Money quote was classic Steve Sr. lol. He's had more quotables than any other player here outside of Ray Lewis. LOL......

I loved it.  I love Smith Sr.  Reminds me how I played hockey as a kid in Canada, just keep coming and coming, talking all kinds of crap and getting into the dirty with zero craps given.  Seeing Torrey on MNF was the best, it even gets you going a little bit because Torrey is so level headed all the time.  When Torrey is stiff arming dudes and getting in guys faces, talking crap to them and initiating contact, you know its going down.

I've been on the fence about Dean Pees for the whole season, but in the past few weeks I've been leaning toward keeping him around if we can. He does a lot with a little.

(not that I'd be opposed to a guy like Wade Philips, mind)

Just look at Steve's best postseason from 2003 (his career best) and compared with this postseason so far. He's on pace to tie or better it at this age. Amazing. They made it to the Super Bowl that year.

Torrey on a similar pace when looking at his 2012 SB run numbers. Both of their 'best postseason' numbers eerily  are almost to a decimal on the same career track. Scary (...in a good way).
