Why Are Some People Afraid Of The Pats?

3 posts in this topic

Okay, lately ive been reading newspaper articles and have talked with fans who speculate to the Ravens' playoff future and talk about who we might play. Most likely, we'll play the pats. And everyone's scared of them. But, why? Their offense? Sure, they've thrived against some teams, but they've won against:
the Raiders
Seattle(they barely won that, 24-21)
Bills
Rams
Chiefs
49ers
Jets
Which, if im doing the math right, accounts for 7 of their 10 wins. Im sure the Ravens can beat any of them with ease.

As for their losses, who have they lost to? respectable teams, such as Indy and the steelers but they also lost to the Jets at their own home, Miami, and San Diego. In short, the Pats have had one of the NFL's easier schedules and they're not as powerful as we think.

Well, I made the same argument against the 2006 Chicago Bears when I felt they didn't deserve to be in the Super Bowl with the Colts, since 10 of their 13 victories came against non-playoff teams, and only 1 of their 3 losses was to a losing team. People were saying the "dominant" Bears defense would stifle the Colts, yet Peyton Manning and the tandem of Dominic Rhodes & Joseph Addai embarassed them on the league's biggest stage.

So, I can see where your argument against the Patriots this season makes sense.

Yet, you have to give them props for picking up the pieces so quickly after Tom Brady went down for the season. Matt Cassel stepped up tremendously, even if it was against mediocre competition.

I think the Patriots are dangerous as a team; though their schedule was projected as the easiest in the league, they still had to show up and play. And additionally, they've been in the playoffs before (particularly the coaching staff) -- they know what it's like to be there, and after almost running the table on a perfect season, they've demonstrated that they know what it takes to win in pressure situations, even if they couldn't finish the job.

I think people are just afraid of the name "Patriots" which I don't blame, when you look at it on paper and just the match "Ravens vs Patriots" it's pretty intimidating but when you look at the 7 terrible teams they've beat then you look at the only winning teams they've beat;

Jets- inconsistant team
Phins- They sniffed out the wildcat which they failed to do in their first game
Cardinals- these guys shouldnt even be a winning team, they got their division handed to them.

And that's it 2 of those teams are in their division, suddenly the "Patriots" aren't that scary.
