[News] Sam Koch's Effectiveness 'Off The Charts'

37 posts in this topic

It is good to see him doing well. Last year he was bad. No sense in sugar coating it or pretending it didn't happen. His game was definitely off. However, he has made a remarkable turnaround this year. Whatever he did to get back is working. Now, if only we had an offense that could score consistently and a defensive backfield. Oh well, I can dream can't I?

LMAO, Yeah buddy. Right after he chucks the TV off the balcony!!

Grew up with Joe Walsh music. I saw his bands many times including the James Gang. I'm a bassist and we always had a JG tune in the set. Check out Daryls' house on Utube. Daryl Hall from Hall and Oats features musicians in his personal recording studio.  The one with Walsh is legendary.  Also, James Gang Live is useful to blast through the house for come from behind games.  I wish M&T played classic rock/funk instead of the monodrome chant we always hear

A lot of people were bashing the hell out of him last year on here and now this year you see nothing but love. I still remember the cries last year that we needed someone new. As for this year, the others with 19 and the few with more inside the 20 also have more punt attempts than Koch. In truth if you look at the numbers he has the best or second best numbers in the league. In my opinion he has the best numbers when based on number of kicks, number inside 20 and longest when you combine all three. He had 35 punt attempts 19 inside the 20 and a 69 yard long. There are other 69 yarders and a few 70, 71, 72 and one 77 long but those are all from kickers with 40 to 50 attempts this season. All of those kickers have 18 (one guy at 18 the rest got from 11-16) or less inside the 20. He is listed in the teens (14 right now according to ESPN) as far as his spot on the list for average distance but that is a misleading number because you don't want to kick a 70 yard punt if you are kicking from 50 or 60 yards out. Even though he is so far down the list on that one, he is still #5 for the net yards which make that even more impressive, means he is putting the ball in a good spot to be defended. For all the things he has the highest numbers for when it comes to punters he is number 5 for least attempts of punts for the seasons. So I think he grades pretty high on performance this year.

Your view and logic are spot on. Well written piece! You know more about his game then his family. A crappy punter gives a team bad field position. Field position is a center piece in a game plan. The long punter we acquired from SF when Cox went down is not mentioned in the news of which I assume is good news.

LOL, I second all that... please... no more "Whiskey in a Jar-o" crap in the stadium... surely, you can pick out approx. 100 other Metallica songs that are much better suited for the stadium environment!

I dig your grim reaper raven. We ought to have them instead of the retro fitness male cheer leaders that come out at game intro with Metallica blasting the horns. .

W/Flacco orchestrating his multitude of three and outs, it's nice to have Koch to help even it out a bit now and then. Thanks, Mr. Koch.

Just saw this post because I was looking at someone quoting me. When this story was posted Koch was #5 for least attempts of punts for the seasons. That means only 4 other punters in the league had kicked less punts. Seems like that would be impossible if he was on a team that had a lot of three and outs. By the way according to http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/three-and-out-percentage/2014/%C2'> only Miami and New Orleans have fewer three and outs this year than the Ravens.

In a contract year its no surprise that he's having another Pro Bowl season. Good as he is we may not see him in Black and Purple next season as he'll cost us a fortune against the salary cap.

He's already been resigned for 5 more years.
