[News] Sam Koch's Effectiveness 'Off The Charts'

37 posts in this topic

The effectiveness of Koch's punts are directly related to the ineffectiveness of the offense. Think about it.. a Ravens' drive stalls at their 40yd line = a punt inside the opponents 20.

Looking at the comments it is clear you just cant make some fans happy. If he kicks inside the 20, its because the offense stalled close to the 50 and it was easy however, being ranked 5th in net yard discludes that pessimism or he'd have a 30 yard average. Or that he missed one or two punts, but once again, being in the top 5 in punts inside the 20, also net yards and only two touchbacks discludes that he does this regularly or his average, touchbacks and kicks inside the 20 wouldnt be that good. Please, its a bye week, take a bye on the negative comments.  After all, the only punter in the HOF is Ray Guy, and he shanked punts every  now and then also.

I guess you did not see the shank punt in the Super Bowl or the Denver game.

Cru?....  They were talking about THIS year...?

I always like to see Sam Koch trot onto the field when we have to punt; not because I like to punt, but just because I know that he is going to be successful and limit a return, with a big chance of pinning the opponent deep or getting a no-return. True, we don't want to have to punt, but if you do have to punt, I like my chances with Koch.

Could it be that there is a decision not to take a risk?

Could it also be that the opposing defense is playing hard and well too?

Could it be that the Ravens coaching staff and leading players know more about the game than people like you?

The important punter.   Very few of us realize how vital this position is.   Field position places your team in the advantagous field position or disaster when his punt is blocked,  My ultimate example is the Miami Dolphin Garo Yapremian kick in the 70's. The most horrible ridiculous circumstance of events happened to him.  Check that out on Utube for a good laugh.

Koch is a member of the wolf pack. He is also Mr. Coffin Corner.

That avatar you have: Is it Joe Walsh at 5 in the morning?

Man that was a complicated explaination but right on.  As you know, on our forum, if he screwed up like the secondary during the Bengals and Steelers losses, he would be a ideal target for the merciless ones.    Quick.. for  Bonus points... What was Ray Guys number??  AND who was your favorite Raider of the 70's Mine was Phil Villapiano-I was an old Raiders fan-proving I am old as dirt :)

We were kind of sweating his performances a couple times last year, after his pro-bowl year if memory serves,... so I'm glad he's got his "Leg Swag" back!

I think Sam's thunderous punts outnumber the shanks, especially when the offense has "3-and-outted" deep in our territory! He can boom a 60 yarder from the End-zone and it's gonna get caught at the opposing 40 yard line = short field!

That's what stalled drives at least need to get a 1st Down or 2, to give us field position that doesn't hurt the defense!

Punters are players too!.....Finally, Koch got his recognition he deserved.....

They have always been players.  The rest of the team gets the dirt on their uni but the punter gets all the pressure on and off the field.

W/Flacco orchestrating his multitude of three and outs, it's nice to have Koch to help even it out a bit now and then. Thanks, Mr. Koch.

When a punter kicks the ball out of bounds on the opponents one, two or three yard line, that is known as the coffin corner. Koch has done this a number of times.

I tend to find punting stats to be one of the less-useful stats out there, since they largely depend on circumstance. Total yards, average yards, return yards allowed, and kicks inside the 20 all hinge on how far your offense can push it down field. Arizona's Drew Butler has the 5th most punts inside the 20, the 2nd lowest average yards/punt, and the 5th fewest retuns because his offense gets the ball down field so he can kick unreturnable balls inside the 20.

Sam Koch is the man! He ram around in the endzone to SOLIDIFY the win in the SB, he almost ran down the returner holiday, for the Broncos in the playoff game and a buddy of mines whom happens to be a squeeler said our punter better watch out for Antonio Brown after he kicked a player in the face I QUICKLY told him Sam use to be a LBer and will drop AB! SILENCE! Sam is the MAN! Oh yeah Hell of a Punter! Lol

In a contract year its no surprise that he's having another Pro Bowl season. Good as he is we may not see him in Black and Purple next season as he'll cost us a fortune against the salary cap.

Good field position can spark a team on, and bad position can put a team on it's heels....not always, but it helps when your opponent is constantly starting close to his own goal line. Sam Koch's influence may never be fully appreciated because when he is on his game it's the defense that reap the benefit. Great job Sam! GO RAVENS!

A lot of people were bashing the hell out of him last year on here and now this year you see nothing but love. I still remember the cries last year that we needed someone new.

As for this year, the others with 19 and the few with more inside the 20 also have more punt attempts than Koch. In truth if you look at the numbers he has the best or second best numbers in the league. In my opinion he has the best numbers when based on number of kicks, number inside 20 and longest when you combine all three. He had 35 punt attempts 19 inside the 20 and a 69 yard long.

There are other 69 yarders and a few 70, 71, 72 and one 77 long but those are all from kickers with 40 to 50 attempts this season. All of those kickers have 18 (one guy at 18 the rest got from 11-16) or less inside the 20. He is listed in the teens (14 right now according to ESPN) as far as his spot on the list for average distance but that is a misleading number because you don't want to kick a 70 yard punt if you are kicking from 50 or 60 yards out. Even though he is so far down the list on that one, he is still #5 for the net yards which make that even more impressive, means he is putting the ball in a good spot to be defended.

For all the things he has the highest numbers for when it comes to punters he is number 5 for least attempts of punts for the seasons. So I think he grades pretty high on performance this year.
