Jimmy Smith done for the season

I think the denial came in the very beginning, not after the surgery.

According to Wiki, Lisfranc cannot be picked up on Xray between 15 (weight-bearing) and 50% (non-WB) of the time. Only more advanced imaging can pick it up. Kind of makes sense, if they didn't do a CT or MRI in the beginning, then it wasn't getting better after a few weeks, so they decided to MRI it, then announced he was needing surgery and out for the season.

So Harbs and Jimmy were releasing info as they got it from the docs, not misleading anybody.

Anyway, that's how it would go out here in our puny under-funded rural ER. I'd think for a pro athlete, they'd do advanced imaging right away, but you would know better than me how they'd handle that in Bmore.

I'm not trying to be a jerk but here you go:

http://m.espn.go.com/general/blogs/blogpost?blogname=baltimore-ravens&id=15197&src=desktop

I'm on mobile so it's not easy to write but here's the significant part:

"When the swelling went down in Smith's left foot, he went for an exam in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Thursday. It showed that the ligaments in his foot were stretched between the bone, and highly regarded orthopedist Dr. Robert Anderson opted for surgery."

I guess my issue is if what you say is true and we weren't sure it was a Lisfranc initially then yes. That makes sense. My problem is this article is after the surgery. Harbaugh either lied or was sneaky about the details. There's really no reason to do either. Jimmy was confirmed to go to IR. I don't get the reason to deceive the public. There's no competitive advantage to hiding the information. Jimmy revealed it himself so I can't see how Harbaugh just didn't want to say for Smith's sake.

It makes no sense. There are varying degrees of Lisfranc injuries and their severity depends on the degree. It sounded like it wasn't that serious. I guess that's my issue.

I love Jimmy but I wouldn't extend him until he proves he's fine after this injury. I don't think it's that serious, even though this type of injury can be serious. Still, we can't take any more bad contacts. I'd rather risk it and have to really pay Smith than pay him and he isn't the same player.

Yeah, we seem to have terrible luck with key players getting injured/Ray Rice incident after giving them big contracts and having to eat their cap numbers after cutting them or over pay for their performance.

Maybe it was an abnormal presentation too. I am glad for Jimmy's sake they did not mess around with the injury. He should be ready for training camp

no worries, Grim. You're not being a jerk at all.

Thanks for the link. Like you, I'm just trying to understand it all. Ortho's not my thing, but I need to learn more about it.

In other news I absolutely despise the Bengals even more since this injury occurred against them. I wish them nothing but the worst.

I didn't need to wait for Jimmy's injury to wish the worst upon Bungles

I despise all divisional rivals. The Bungles are quickly rising up to Steelers type of hate.

Yes they are, particularly considering they play like its the Super Bowl, then drop games to deadbeat teams.

Even the Bungles can field a competitive team if they have top 10 picks for 20+ yrs! However, they are still the Bungles once they make it to the playoffs...

Like i said when he got vs Bengals. He is our best and most important player on defense, maybe the team outside of Qb...Its over...The season ended basically with his injury. Probably win Bengals game that day as well.

Anyone have the rankings or stats for our D and secondary specifically pre Jimmy injury and post Jimmy injury? Just curious and too lazy to look myself.

64% comp pct allowed, 2,196 yards allowed (275 yards per game), 7 TDs allowed, 5 INTs. Quarterbacks averaged 37 pass attempts per game against us. Team record was 5-3.

4 games without him (all the November games):

71% comp pct allowed, 1,322 yards allowed (331 yards per game), 13 TDs allowed, 3 INTs. Quarterbacks averaged 39 pass attempts per game against us. Team record was 2-2.

As expected. Pretty staggering difference for both yards and TDs scored. Thanks for posting.

Seems to indicate that we suck without Jimmy. Didn't realize how badly we missed him, but he left a big hole in the secondary.

Also, this demonstrates that personnel really is the main problem, unlike what some would like to believe. This is a significant drop off, and the only big difference is Jimmy. But it's all on Pees, right?

Ha, agreed and true. Due to ONE player, we went from giving up a single TD thru the air per game to giving up 3 per game. Pretty amazing, really.

It's pretty crazy.  We could always count on Jimmy to lock down his side of the field and roll safety help over to the other CB.  Without Jimmy, the whole philosophy pretty much changes.

And of course this injury bug hit our corners. Couldn't have hit dline, linebackers, or safety where we have all the depth in the world. It just had to hit corner. First Webb, then Asa, and now Jimmy. We're screwed.

Then webb again
