Jimmy Smith done for the season

377 posts in this topic

Okay, I have taken a couple of deep breaths and then put on my rose colored glasses. IF Webb can use the bye to rehab his back more to become an efficient CB (not asking for great just effective) and our new CBs are decent we MIGHT make the playoffs. But we will also need our safeties to get their heads out of ... and play decent ball. Then we would have Webb, Asa, Danny Gorrer and Tramain Jacobs.

IF all that happened and we have no more injuries to key players, then we have a small chance that we will make a run at the playoffs.

When I take off the rose colored glasses, I just feel sad to see a promising season disappear. It does not mean that I will not be watching and rooting for my team every week hoping that they can pull off wins. Just will not be mad if does not happen. No reason to be mad as Harbs and Ozzie. How could they have ever seen this kind of devastation at CB? Just how it rolls this year. I am sure that our players will do the best they can and the coaches will do their best to make it all work. I love my Ravens.

Ahhhh how good training camp seemed. Chykie brown proving. Asa jackson poised to make and impact. Webb returning to form and Jimmy continuing on path to super-stardom.

Appears to be position of strength even with unknown entities.

I was excited about Asa too with him finally putting all his personal crap aside, but we should have addressd this position in the draft; however, we got too cute by thinking we would find gold in undrafted rookie CBs. We'll see with Jacobs; they better be right.

Shockye Brown was usually just a warm body, and as soon as Webb went down with the back injury I thought there would be trouble if we lost Jimmy, hence my 9-7 or 10-6 prediction prior to the season. I didn't exactly have high expectations for the season, but hoped we'd find a way to be playing our best ball in December.

At this point, I expect much less from this team and anticpate 8-8.

I really don't think the season is over but losing Jimmy is a big deal. The Patriots almost won a Super Bowl with a worse CB corps. Guys just have to step up and I'm not confident they can do that to win a Super Bowl. I think we can definitely make the playoffs. I just don't see us winning it all. We'll see though. Never give up until it's over. Jacobs and Gorrer could impress. It's possible Webb could step up and return close to form. Jackson could also step up when he returns.

I do think we can make the playoffs. I'm just not sure we can win it all.

Sorry, but I am more "grim" than "coconut" about our playoff chances. Sure we could make playoffs, but I do not believe it is likely, because I do not have faith in this offense to win shootouts as they shoot themselves in the foot against quality opponents. Course, I am happy to eat some crow IF we somehow manage to win 2 out 3 v. NO, SD, and MIA.

not at all one bad loss at the end of 4 of 5 on the road if not for turnovers and a couple big plays this team is 7-2 i believe what i posted will happen less turnovers by the offense and the defense will create more.

No, it's not one bad loss, it's about not being able to beat a quality opponent YET as well as laying an egg against the two division contenders.

The only possible silver lining i can imagine is that this will light a gigantic fire under the offenses ***.  There is nothing good that comes from not having Jimmy, he's my favorite part of the secondary and has been since we drafted him.  If our defense can just hold on long enough to let the offense win games, that's the only positive outcome i see...

Kinda weird, but I do understand what you are saying. Desperate times call for desperate measures. We should be playing with house money so let the freak flag fly. HOWEVER, coaching will become more important and at this point I'm not feelin' Spags, Pees, and Kubes suddenly scheming any better in the second half of the season.

Watching this Browns and Bengals game and i think we might be the worst team in the division. Im officially depressed.

You mean with what you have seen up until tonight and considering that we are in 4th place, you are just NOW depressed?! Welcome, welcome.

This thread makes me sad.

I mean I was sad already for Jimmy, but reading the stuff here.

Good grief.

Could you really go into a team meeting look each player in the eye and say " we are done "  " we loose out the rest of the season "  " just tank the rest of the season "

Man I would loose complete and total respect for the Ravens is such words are spoken.  I would seriously consider giving up on being a Ravens fan is they lay down the rest of the season.  I would go be a Bills fan.  At least they have heart and they try.

I fully expect the few remaining Ravens to give their all the remainder of this season.

Dont get me wrong.  It stings like a son of a gun, but its not over.  Not even a little bit.

Thank God the players dont come on here and read this dribble.

Look, none of us be coaching up the players. We tell it like it is, or at least perceive it to be. Fans are entitled to their opinions, some are more rational and/or supported than others.

Bottom line is this: sure, we expect them not to quit, to be committed, creative, etc. BUT the reality is if I had to bet on us just making the playoffs at this point this year, I SURE would not put my money on this team considering the lack of team identity, inconsistent execution, and mediocre coaching I've seen against quality opponents.

If you're talking about the 2011 season where we lost to the Pats in the conference final, their secondary wasn't this bad. We're horrific. We have no consistent play from any of our DBs. We can't tackle or cover.

I disagree. The Patriots secondary that year was bad.

They ranked 31st out of 32 teams. That's bad. They did have a lot of INTs, though, so it's true that they had that going for them.

Everyone talks about SD. They're coming to our house. They're not even that scary. They are the last team that scares me of our schedule. The Browns concern me more than them.

You can always use Jacoby Jones as a CB what with his speed and his inability to catch passes.  Harsh words, I know, but maybe the guy really is at the wrong position.  Keep him as a returner though, he's money!

The people suggesting we tank... disgusting. The draft always takes care of itself, we got a better player at 17 overall than most teams in the top 12 got. Losing Jimmy is a fatal blow to the team but we have to go out guns blazing, quitting or giving up isn't in our DNA.

Damn did this season implode in a hurry, for all the expectations this year I feel sick. At least we have the next great Ravens defender in Mosley and Jernigan will be a stud next year. If we can stop getting decimated with injuries the future is bright. Best rookie class in years.

Yeah they got burned often, but they had play makers in that secondary that put the ball back in the offenses hands. We get burned and make no plays on the ball. Plus their offense was much more explosive they were a team that could allow a lot on defense and come back and score. Were not built like that.

Would the we add a taller/longer CB to add some size to our CBs? Sammy Seamster? He was making a lot of noise during the offseason.

EDIT: Didn't realize he's with Miami. Dang.

speaking of the Patriots, do we have any WR's that would make a good CB?  I'm 100% serious...

Jacoby Jones can't catch so maybe he can be one?

Yeah, that's true. That secondary was really good at getting back the ball with INTs. McCourty was a big part of that for sure.

We need our pass rush to be at a insane level and we can still do things. It's gonna be tough without Jimmy but at home we are still a great team. It's when we go on the road we're very shaky.

Then get them in fa

Let torrey walk

Get chris harris

Get brandon flowers

Cut ngata. We have depth in his position.

Cut Suggs to. He isn't worth the money we're paying him. Another screw up by Ozzie Newsome, overpaying for players passed their prime. Of course to everyone, Ozzie's the greatest ever.  He has had more failures then successes in recent years. Mosley is good but Brooks is another bust.

Yes, let's write off a third round draft pick as a bust half way through his first season despite him playing alright beyond the occasional rookie mistake. God forbid not every rookie plays like a probowler right away.

The thing about excuses is that everybody has one. The loss of Jimmy for the rest of the season is bad news and it speak volumes about what an impact player Jimmy has become. However,it should not have had as much of an impact as it has had if the rest of our secondary was any good. Let's face it. They are

terrible. The depth chart for our secondary has been weak from Day One. The breakdown in our coverage

was fairly predictable. The FO did nothing to upgrade our defensive backfield in the offseason.

Hopefully, somebody will step up and show the coaches that they deserve to be on the roster next year.

If not, we'll be lucky to finish the season at 9-7. As Jim Mora would say, "Playoffs? Playoffs? Who

said anything about playoffs?"

I'm honestly not as doom and gloom as I was when I first heard the news. Sure, it doesn't look good, but we can still win this division.

The Bengals still have 3 more division games. They could trade losses with the Steelers and lose again to the Browns on the road. Plus they play @ Saints next week.

The Steelers still play the Bengals twice, and the Steelers lose to bad teams all of the time as it is. Plus they have to play the Chiefs who are decent.

The Browns are a team that I honestly can't take seriously until the season is over and they're the winners.

If our offense takes care of the ball, they can win us games despite our secondary. Our pass rush will help mask the terrible secondary a little bit too, plus the defense still stops the run well. We just have to win our games, that's all we can do.

You, sir, are a lucky man.

Webb steps it up, Gorrer becomes the next Corey Graham, Asa comes back lights out. This is the NFL. Injuries come with the territory. Stranger things have happened.

That is the RAVENS attitude.   You know!!
