#Change The Game

18 posts in this topic

Mike and Mike started this topic. Here are a few suggestions:

1. offensive and defensive holding = 5 yds, eliminate automatic 1st down.

2. any loose ball behind the line of scrimmage is a free ball, ie an incomplete pass behind the line can be recovered by the defense.

3. eliminate pass interference spot fouls. Max penalty is 15 yds.

4. two bye weeks, one being before a Thursday Night game.

5. eliminate celebration penalty; illegal formation penalty

6. just for fun, eliminate televised ice hockey :)

How would you #change the game?

Items 1 and 3 accomplish nothing in my opinion. We've seen the NFL use a 15 yard penalty for PI, and it became obvious that anytime somebody was beat for a TD, you just tackle the guy. Way too easy to exploit in my opinion, same thing for item 1.

I don't see the point of item 2.

A good start would be by getting rid of Goodell.  NFL is getting harder to watch every year.  Upshaw hit on Roethlisberger (1st game) was legal a few years ago.  I understand that quarterbacks are extremely important but they are players too.

I'm not asking for a critique; I'm asking how you would change the game.

Frankly, I wouldn't. I'm sure this will undoubtedly launch the "the game is too soft and offensive driven" rants, but the reality is that those concepts are EXACTLY what the NFL's target audience and majority of its viewership wants to see.

Plus, as a natural business decision, it does the NFL no good to promote on-field violence like hard hits when they get sued by those same players a decade later.

Add more time (5 sec. for example) to the play clock to eliminating some of the delay of game penalties that only serve to delay the game.

That doesn't solve anything. Just means the offense can potentially run the game clock longer. Does anybody really think that 40 seconds between plays isn't enough time?

Threads are like children: you give them a start in life and HOPE they go the way you want. You can't control them, though.

Goodell is only doing those things against hits due to the recent lawsuit over concussions.  It won't matter if Goodell is here or not.  The next CEO will continue to make the game "safer".  If Goodell weren't here, someone else would be doing it

Unlimited challenges as long as the coach keeps getting them right

I agree 100% with this.  Why should you be limited if you get the challenges right?  Answer:  you shouldn't.

The only thing that truly irritates me about watching games is how long replays take.  Seriously - you need 5 minutes to figure out (if we're lucky it's only that long..) what happened?  Ridiculous.  I know at one time they supposedly had a time limit but I don't think they do any longer or if so they never enforce it.

Taunting. Gone.

The ability to challenge penalties.

Rule #2 in the original post is good too.

get rid of the celebration penalties. if one side of a team wouldnt let the other team get a big play, they wouldnt have to watch that team celebrate.

- Goodbye Goodell is the first thing I do to change the game. Then find a commish who is dedicated to undoing everything Goodell did to "fix" what wasn't broken.

- No more London games, no more London anything. If we want to expand, go to Toronto. It doesn't have to be the Bills but they have the Blue Jays, so why not a NFL team? Each team has 8 HOME games and 8 AWAY, leave it be.

- A DB can make contact with a WR up to 10 yards(or the equivalent of a first down). Corners today can't jam a receiver at the line to disrupt his route, they have to sit there and let him catch the ball before tackling. I know the rule is no contact beyond five yards but let's add five more yards so the receivers actually have to work if they want to catch the ball.

- Every official is accountable for their own actions. Every time they rule something wrong then it goes against them. If they rule something wrong a certain amount of times, they would be fired. I would also get some younger more quicker officials that can keep up with the speed of the game.

- Officiating Part 2, Full Time Officials. The NFL is basically 24/7 if you think about it. These officials have jobs during the off-season then being NFL refs for the season. Let's get some full time officials in here to help make the game better. Full time officials mean they have more time to study the rules, study new rules, etc and it would help with getting more calls correct.

- No more Thursday Night Football with the exception of Opening Night for the Super Bowl Champions, and Thanksgiving Night.

- Any City that has a stadium that can hold enough people for a Super Bowl can bid on it. Think about this, a NASCAR track in Bristol, TN that holds 160,000 people is hosting a college football game in 2016 between Virginia Tech & Tennessee. Now if a NASCAR track can stage a college football game, why can't any city in the US, NFL team or no NFL team who has the stadium to do it, host a Super Bowl?
