We need Rex Ryan back

328 posts in this topic

No what we need is a DB corps that is not riddled with injuries

To be fair, the safety positions were always looking pretty weak this year.  Maybe Hill is a part of the answer there, but it's a different secondary than the one where Reed and Pollard made sure that nothing bad was going to happen.

I'll grant you that the CBs have been weakened by the injuries, especially Smith.

I'm not Pees' biggest fan but overall I think he's doing a very nice job. I would keep him and I definitely think we will keep him.

So... looks like anybody who wants Rex would be competing with a TV station who is ready to offer him a multi-million dollar deal. It is being reported that a TV station was getting a deal together for Rex before the Jets decided to keep him last year.

I think rex is a coach and he really enjoys coaching. It's in his blood. I'm not ruling out TV for him, but his dad is Buddy Ryan and his brother is Rob Ryan.

Agreed on Rex wanting to stay coaching...he does love the limelight but not sure that much

On a side it is likely the Jets fire Rex and likely most of his staff will jettison if he does not find a HC spot I would love to see us go and bring back Dennis Thurman if we could either as DC or DB coach--loved him while he was here and has done great with the Jets

But does anyone think that he could actually work under Harbaugh again?  He's a prideful guy and he left not with the best attitude.  Hew might not be sought after as a HC, but he'll prolly have many offers to be a DC.

I'm not totally against Pees, but its hard to argue his position lately and hard to deny a proven defensive mind like Rex's.

I know people are so Hell-bent on seeing Dean Pees off that it's blinding some of the opinions, I feel, around here. Pees isn't my favorite coordinator we've had, but he's been an effective one at times. He's certainly not as bad as people paint him to be. I like Rex Ryan as a DC, because he knows how to use his guys and, more importantly, his players like to play for him. I think a big part of that is he can relate with them as well as he's aggressive. That'll endear you to a group of young football stars looking to knock peoples' heads off on defense.

I think there are or could be better options available for DC, if we even wanted to change. I think it's certainly possible we could entertain it and that Pees could be fired as a scapegoat, but I hardly fault him entirely for the way this defense has performed. I don't think he's even that bad. He has a patchwork secondary with as many holes in it as a homeless person's socks.

Your glaring problem is your CB's. So what do you do? You leave them on an island by themselves after Rivers JUST TORCHED you one drive ago? Then you go and do the exact same thing again? Can't play wit 'em. Can't coach with 'em. CAN'T DO IT!

Let's say Rex lets bygones be bygones.  He likes the Ravens and wants to become our DC again.  Great!  Are we all going to, 'spontaneously,' remember how awful it was to have him do one of his exotic blitzes against Peyton and have the resulting play be a 50 yard touchdown again?  I'm only asking because this fanbase on this board seems to have amnesia where that kind of scenario is concerned.

I think it's more likely that overall our fans are fickle and forgetful and don't feel like remembering all the times Rex went for some weirdo blitz package that bit us in the butt.  I remember and I remember why I was glad he left.  I know we all love to blame ONE PERSON for things but overall this can be laid at the FOs feet, Pees feet and yes guys, the players' feet.  We just have bad players right now at key positions.  Sorry, that's not Dean's fault.

I'm going to have to defend Pees in a way as well. Many people are down on him but should be directing their anger toward Harbs before Pees. I mean why would Harbs think we need 5-7 safeties  and while only 4 CBs on our 53 man roster? There was no logic in that, thus when Jimmy went down, our secondary went to the garbage can. No depth behind him, tired of wanting to find players who are versatile and can play multiple positions. I know Oher was a scape goat here for the OL, but it didn't help we kept flip flopping him between LT and RT. With Terrance Brooks, we need to figure if he will be a corner or a Safety, and let him develop at that position. Let these players learn a position and get good at it.

Now let's go back to his first season as DC, strangely enough 2012 when we won the Super Bowl. That year, Suggs was on PUP to start the season, Ray got injured, we lost Webb and we had several injuries to our defense that Pees had to deal with. This year, not only did Harbs handicap him by having only 4 CBs, but after Smith and Webb, we didn't really have anything behind those two. Since Pees got here in 2012, he has dealt with losing players on defense and hasn't been able to fully take advantage of a healthy defense.

I know injuries happen but man if we could just have all 11 starters on defense healthy once, I think many would stop blaming Pees.

I think it is in part Pees' fault.  Ozzie gets the players Pees asks for within the restraints of salary cap and availability.  Pees' has done a lot with little talent, but it is not working and I was a big support of the man early on. I don't think that they can make his style fit here.

Rex's blitzes did open us up to big plays, but they weren't frequent.  Nothing is perfect and we shouldn't expect it.  We also have the offense now to keep or set the scoring pace.  Of all the possible DC candidates coming available this coming offseason Rex is the only one I know that will fit the bill.  I just don't if his pride will allow it anyway.

I'm over Pees.  That secondary of his couldn't stop a receivers even if he armed them with pistols.

Let's be clear about something, the DC has little to no input on roster construction. That's all on the GM and some HC. You think Pees goes up to Ozzie and says "please don't get me any quality CBs, I prefer 7 safeties instead."

Ozzie dropped the ball, plain and simple.

meh nobody expects injury to the top 3 corners(webb, asa, jimmy), another injury to a corner you brought in (ross)and have the lone remaining corner not step up (chyckie)

webb got injured in training camp, asa early in the season , jimmy, around the half way point , ross also in trainings camp.

this all happend after the draft and FA started.

corner position got hit hard and those who claimed they predicted this probaly jinxed the ravens lol

Rex Ryan would only be good if we had 2 shutdown corners like 2006. Granted Rex only needs one....but 2006 was a beautiful year!

Well I didn't predict injuries, but I was certainly concerned about the lack of depth at a very important position. I thought Jimmy and Webb would be good and I like Asa as the nickel. It's still putting a lot of faith in a player that had zero experience (Asa) and a player who has always been bad (Chykie). I was kind of stunned we only went with 4 CBs on the roster.

yeah but looking at when the injuries started the happen it hards to find a good corner.

trading would have been your best bet but they never come cheap.

I totally agree; ever since Jimmy was out, our secondary falling apart cuz Jimmy was the anchor and we can easily roll extra DB to help other side when we know Jimmy will surely hold his own.

If our secondary can cover over 5 sec, our pass rush should get inside, and if we can play press coverage consistently, our front 7 should cut through the holes to the QB.

I think we all need to look at NY and understand that it may not have been as much Rex as it was personnel....  I, for one, wouldn't want him back.  His scheme?  It was good....  but he wouldn't be able to come in here and do what he would need to with the personnel we have on this roster. There would be little if no difference.

We need to stop bashing on our Secondary...  We all already know how bad it's been.  We have lived it, and it has very little to do with our DC.  This conversation has been beaten ad nauseum.

That team in NY is sooooo fractured, it's gonna take years to repair.  Look at the players that have been through there the past few years...  come and gone on to other teams...  with great success on other teams....

Stay Classy Baltimore....

rex is a very good coach. rex with our current defensive personell would be like rex with the jets current personnel, he would fail. quit blaming Pees. you can't put lipstick on this pig.

That's my point. We shouldn't have been in a situation where losing injuries couldn't have been dealt with. Every team has injuries, but most have at least some depth as well. The 2014 Ravens had no depth at CB and unfortunately it was the position that got hit hardest.

We've also lost several DLineman, but we had depth there so it didn't hurt. The same could have been true at CB with better roster construction.

No, they need some quality players in the secondary and a better push up front.

Pees is boring as hell and conservative but look at the circus clowns in that DB pool..

dline in 3-4 are interchangeble so thats a pretty bad example.

most of our dliners can line up in all 3 spots so injuries there are easier to deal with,

also carrying 5 corners is pretty much what most team do.

you need 2 starters and a nickle which leaves 2 back ups in case of injury.

so depth was there with jimmy webb asa ross and chykie as the projected 5 for the season.

like i said there is no way anyone can predict 4 of those 5 being injured during the season with putting 2 on IR lol

Ross injury was the earliest and they replaced him with franks.

webb was projected to back when the regular season started but he probaly had a set back and doesent look 100% which nobody can predict TBH.

we still had 5 corners at this point which is good depth.

Nobody could predict Asa then going down in week 5 of the season only to be able to return week 14.

this cut our depth to 4 but asa was predicted to be back, still decend depth since they where forcing elam to play nickle already.

Week 8 is when it got bad when jimmy had to be placed on IR leaving us with 2 healthy back ups and webb who should have been 100% by then.

nobody could have predicted this IMO.

now we only got 3 cbs left

they had depth with 5 corners but 4 got injured.

4 injuries to 1 position , aint nobody can predict or prepare for that.

also there is no way with a salary cap that any team can have 5 or more starter worthy corners lol.

if everyone just  relax and look back at when the injuries occured and when our depth became a question mark , most will see there is no way you could predict and prepare for this .

We started the season with 4 CBs. 2 of them were starter worthy. Pretty much everyone predicted that CB depth was a major concern.

Ross was never part of the team. He tore his Achilles back in July when he was doing his conditioning test.

Bad roster construction no way around it.

With a healthy team that has talent right ?

It's really not difficult to see that the D issues are not with the coordinator. While Pees is not a HOF coach, he's not the dummy or scrub some make him out to be. With decent and cohesive secondary personnel the Ravens D would be more than adequate.

Agreed

To a certain extent Pees is being made a scapegoat by fans.

Rex Ryan is a stellar coordinator however and having him scheme for the Ravens would be exceptional. However, he was the heir apparent when Harbaugh was selected and may feel slighted and unwilling to Raven Up again, unless invited to do so with Head Coaching responsibilities.

Harbaugh is unlikely to desire Ryan because of potential challenge to his authority and tenure, illustrated by his purge of former outspoken Ravens.  Biscotti is also unlikely to place Harbaugh in a position where the coach feels threatened.

Still, after yet another mismanaged time out situation by our coach, taking on Ryan might be worth the risk to improve our defense.  Head coaches should demonstrate sound judgment the majority of the time to be tenured.
