Sunday QB

I think we need one more Cornerback

85 posts in this topic

He was with Tampa Bay at one point, but he was cut from the Lions today.

I'm just saying, it might be worth at least kicking the tires. You never know.

Can it get much worse at this point, honestly?  I'm not speaking specifically to Gorrer here, but I'd be all about giving chances to some young guys.  Pull up Jacobs from the practice squad or scope out someone from another team's practice squad and see if anything works.  I'd rather see a young guy take his lumps than see guys like Franks and Chykie, who obviously don't have a future here beyond this year, run around looking clueless.

I agree. I'd rather throw Jacobs into the fire and see what we have there at this point. Brown and Franks just haven't played very well. FWIW, I think Franks has played better than Brown.

Franks should be no higher than a #4, but a lack of depth has killed us obviously.  Brown has just been terrible.  I just don't see the sense in keeping someone like that around.  I'd rather kick the tires on a young guy or two and see if we can't find a Marcus Cooper type hanging out somewhere.  If it doesn't work, no big deal.  There's not going to be a drop off in play.  I really don't think it can get much worse than it already is at CB.

I feel you. It can't hurt. Would be nice to have all our guys on the field at the same point though, which is why I still have some faith in this team. If we're playing our best ball going into December we still have a chance to make a run.

Maybe I'm over rating them, but I think Smith, Asa, Webb, Hill and Elam can be a pretty good secondary if they can all get on the field at the smallest time.

There's absolutely no way Champ is worse than Franks or Chykie.. our secondary is disgusting. Will Hill will get better as the season goes but Chykie, Franks, Elam, Stewart are straight garbage in coverage. Elam isn't bad close to the LOS but we ask him to cover way too much. If that means he can't be on the field as much so be it. I'm still a believer in Will Hill.. Brooks has potential but he needs time. We're pretty much screwed right now at safety and we only have 2 cb's that belong on an NFL roster and Jimmy is injured and Webb has fallen off big time from his 2011 form, shell of himself out there this year. The state of the secondary this season makes me sick to be honest, we'll be lucky to nab a wild card with this bunch of jokers on the back end.

Doesn't matter if we can stop the run because after the Pitt game teams will spread us out and abuse our secondary. Ozzie yet again looking silly with the "we like our guys" philosiphy these last 2 years. Ozzie is still a great drafting GM but his work in FA or lack thereof has hurt us immensely recently.

you need cap space if you want to sign players in FA.

the better the player the more you need.

you arent allowed to be over the cap.

No really? You should have a job on NFL Live with kind of insight

I'd almost entertain activating Jacobs from the PS at this point.

Not patting myself on the back here, but I'm glad we actually did it. I think you can't get any worse and at least we can see what we have in Jacobs. If he works out then CB is less of a need next off-season. If not, it remains the same. It's a need regardless this helps quite a bit in decision making.

Think I read today that our old friend Danny Gorrer is a FA. Any thoughts on that?

It looks like we both got what we wanted. I'm not sure Danny will be any better but at least it's a start. Some new blood comes in here, and at worst I'm sure nobody is signing Brown or Franks.

Yeah I'm happy this happened.  I'd much rather see Jacobs than Chykie.  I don't think Gorrer is a savior by any means, but I did want us to at least kick the tires on him.  I didn't see us dropping 2 of our 3 healthy CBs at once though.  Figured it would be one or the other for now, but a message has clearly been sent.

I'd love for both Gorrer and Jacobs to do well. I'm not sure what his contract situation would look like and if he'll be a free agent next year, but I can't see Danny getting some big deal even if he plays awesome. So we should be able to re-sign him. It's an exciting possibility and I'm cautiously optimistic these changes could yield some good results. I liked both Gorrer and Jacobs, so I can't wait to see what they can do. I don't expect greatness but even average is an upgrade.

Injuried or not we don't have any corners who can win their match-up.

Jimmy was shutting down every WR he played... Asa was doing a decent job.

That's a preseason move you make, not an in-season move. We don't need leadership guys right now... we need actual players. You bring somebody like Champ on and you have to cut somebody, and it would probably be a secondary player who we could actually use.

There isn't really much practicing or "teaching" going on once the regular season starts, because there just isn't time for it. The overwhelming time and energy being spent during game weeks is on recovery from the prior game and prepping and working on the gameplan for the upcoming week.

Yes there is. There's time they spend in the film room and a veteran just pointing things out. Time they spend in class going over notes. There's time in the weight room where a league's best can lead by example. Then out in the practice field veterans can both lead by example and point out a few pointers along with the position coaches.

As someone who actually played cornerback and football, even mid-season, there's always time to get advice from someone who is part of the DB group.

We need a cornerback. Good thing is there are several out there on the market already. There are young unproven guys, who we're giving a chance in the sense of Tramain Jacobs and Danny Gorrer. But, I think we should sign one more cornerback. Like Ozzie Newsome says, "we can never have enough good cornerbacks." Thankfully, there are several veterans we can hit up.

  • We worked out Champ Bailey, and signed Dominique Franks instead of him, so we're probably not that high on Champ, who has since retired after being passed over in lieu of Dominique Franks. I think he'd make a great Free Safety though. I think we chose Franks because he was familiar with our system. I'd like to see us convert Webb to a Free Safety and bring in some more cornerbacks

But you'd be surprised to look over the other names of FA available cornerbacks:

  • Dunta Robinson (10th season)
  • Chris Carr (9th season)
  • Quentin Jammer (12th season)
  • Chris Crocker
  • Terrell Thomas
  • Drayton Florence
  • Jabari Greer

I also want to point out that Corey Graham was ranked #2 cornerback in the league by PFF as of week 2: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/09/17/top-10-cornerbacks/

Also if any of you watched the Ravens wired segment against the Steelers, WIll Hill was commenting on how he got beat deep becuase his contacts got knocked out of his eyes on the previous play.

Seriously?

You make over a million dollars a year and you can't afford LASIK eye surgery instead of contacts? Can Steve Bisciotti please get this guy some eye surgery? Or maybe some athletic eye glasses like the ones Kareem ABdul Jabbar wore?

We've passed on these guys all offseason and up to this point.  We chose a UDFA on our practice squad and Danny Gorrer over them.  We chose Chykie Brown and Dominique Franks over them.  It's quite obvious that we do not like anyone currently on the market or they would be here by now.

I agree, but I'd just like to point out that we passed on these guys BEFORE we lost Jimmy Smith for the year. We didn't need to bring in bigger guys because we weren't looking for a STARTING CORNERBACK. We were looking for a nickel or a dime cornerback. We were looking for depth.

That has since changed. Now we NEED a full time starter for the remainder of the year. Can we trust Danny Gorrer to get the second best WR on an NFL team? (presuming Webb shadows the #1 guy) Can we trust that of Tramain Jacobs?

I think standing pat before the trade deadline was our biggest mistake. Couldn't we have traded Jacoby Jones and someone else for a cornerback?

To be honest, I wonder who our therapy and doctors are if we're having this many injury issues. Jimmy Smith, Eugene Monroe, Dennis Pitta, Aaron Ross?

Some of you may forget that Aaron Ross was on the roster and has been on IR instead

We needed a starting CB as of yesterday and we still chose Gorrer and Jacobs over them.  If we thought any of those guys still had it in them to start, they would have been here for depth already.

We've exhausted the market, brought some of those guys in for tryouts, and still haven't signed any of them.  I highly doubt any of them are options at this point.  If we wanted them, they'd have been here already.  It's not like losing Jimmy was the beginning of our CB concerns.  It's been a concern all season.

It does seem weird that you would only keep 3 CBs on your roster at a time. Very few teams keep only 3 (Cowboys and Texans list 3 CBs), while most keep 4-6 CBs on their roster. I guess Pees/Harbs firmly believe in the versatility of their safeties to play CB.
