Well technically, I believe we get a draft pick.

Thats true, as we gave him a qualifying offer.

It's actually pick 21 unless the Mariners throw mega money at someone else.

Me either. Losing Cruz hurts. I hope we don't lose Miller too. I like to see us sign a few decent picks, not like last year throwing away money on guys like Jimenez instead of signing proven players, although we lucked out on Cruz.

Miller is most definitely gone. Looks like to the Yankees

Am I the only who doesn't care about WAR stats? There's a lot of posters on the OH arguing how De Aza won't be much a downgrade from Nick because of some type of WAR stats...

I always look at their website for more insight because there's a lot more knowledgable posters about the O's over there than myself... But I've never disagreed with the majority as I do with this.

I understand he's 31. But he's also our most consistent player who gets on base and is a great defender. Don't see that changing for at least 2 years unless Manny stays heathy, then maybe.... I really want him back. Think he'll be missed in the clubhouse as well. Don't understand the disrespect when comparing him to the other in club options we have.

Jones is the most consistent player on the team... go ahead and look at his numbers.. Plug them in ..  .280/28+/85+

Talking about getting on base in general. Plus Markakis works a count like no other on our team

Talking about getting on base in general. Plus Markakis works a count like no other on our team

You have to worry about how much he declines toward the end of that contract though, which is why I think they're apprehensive about going to 4 years. His speed is pretty much sapped already.  He's got a great arm for the outfield and can obviously still play there now, but what happens in 3 years when his range diminishes even more?  He definitely gets on base but if it gets to a point where he becomes a liability in the field at an older age, he loses all value because he doesn't hit well enough.

Yeah I like Markakis a lot but I don't want to give up a ton of money to keep him because as you say he is already showing some signs of his age and for 4 years is just too much. We do have some holes to fill in the outfield though outside of center field if Markakis goes. I think we should try to sign a guy who can be at least decent out there to fill one of those spots and then have some competition for that other spot. Overall I am not thrilled about this offseason so far but I can't say I am shocked either.

I do say though, those Royals impressed with the speed they had in the outfield, I would love to get another guy who could run out there, it could make our defense even better.

I get all that... Just don't like people acting like it will be easy to replace him, because it won't. I find it almost offensive to suggest that we already have someone on the roster that can lol.

I'm probably in the minority but I'm confident in him having at least two more good years. If we're overpaying on the third year, so be it. I can understand not wanting to give him 4 though. If that's the deal breaker, it's a tough decision for me.

It definitely wouldn't be easy.  OBP and an ability to work a count isn't an easy thing to find.  However, that's pretty much all he'll have going for him going forward.  His skill set just doesn't play well for him at an older age.  I like the guy.  He's an obvious fan favorite and rightfully so.  I'm just wary of paying a guy $12M for 3-4 years when he already doesn't fit the prototypical corner OF mold.

*Only one who knows how to work a count against every pitcher

*Fixed*

(Manny will get there but struggles sometimes)

If he can stay heathy...

That's another thing undervalued about Nick. His durability.

You don't pay big money for a right fielder that doesn't have considerable pop... IMO, that ends the discussion... Especially on the otherwise of 30.

A lead off hitter, with speed and range in the outfield pretty much replaces him IMO. That would prove to be more valuable than him in 2-3 years. The Greek catches the ball, but his range is pretty pathetic, that's not going to improve with age. He just doesn't have enough tools to warrant anything over 7-8 mil in our pay structure.

Doesn't have speed to be any sort of threat on bases . Working a count and getting a single doesn't get you paid big bucks.

But it helps win ball games.... I don't see anyone on the roster who would be able to replace him...not confident we'd be able to replace/upgrade him through FA either but if it ends up going that way, like I said, I'm gonna have to trust DD....Do you think there's a better lead off hitter on the market that we'd actually go after, and realistically be in hunt for? Seems like we're always interested in everybody but nothing ever happens.

I like how you called him The Greek in this instance....You must think this is the end and he's getting ready to fly away from Baltimore. "Business. Always business"

The Royals proved that if you get on base and have speed you can win ballgames. We need to copy that.

Was this a reference to "The Wire?"

I am upset that we don't appear to be in the running for Andy Miller. I could live with losing Nick and Victor knowing we kept our pitching intact, since Manny and Matt should be coming back from their injuries.

I dont think we really need to copy that. IMO small ball isnt going to cut it in the East.
