Jimmy Smith

Had some of the most fluid hips at his combine that year.  I remember being blown away at his physical talents.  Took him 2.5 years to figure out the mental and he's put it together.  Dude is legit.

I love how everyone takes PFF seriously now that its being nice to our guys.

Take their grades with salt if you wish but they watch the all-22 and are extremely fair. I trust them more than any other outlet.

Jimmy has been shutdown this year. He took the leap in a big way.

Receivers dont want to face him.  You can tell, everything is moving away from him.  I wish we could play him at LCB though.

My wife got his jersey his rookie year. I said she was crazy.  She swore he was gonna be great.

She was right.

We were on the side lines for a RAVENS Kids Club thing. Jimmy saw her jersey and gave her a high five and said "Thank You"

I always took it seriously to an extent. The reason I really like them is because they keep advanced corner stats

I got his jersey his rookie year also. Went up to training camp hoping to get it signed, but no go. Still hoping I can go to a game at some point to get an autograph

I always thought he was the best corner in the draft and had no doubt the Ravens would take him

You can, and he does play at LCB at times, but shadowing can put strain on other corners and the Ravens seem to have faith in their other guys enough to not want to shadow

I get the value of the stats, though as with other figures they always need to be taken for what they are.

I just found it funny that almost literally every post I saw last year (and the year before from memory) that mentioned PFF talked about how it's a joke or a terrible way of rating players, but this year's it's suddenly a great rating tool. More of a general shift than anyone in particular.

Although speaking of which, the "Jimmy is a bust" brigade has been awful quiet. Everyone was always a fan since day one. From my end, I came in as a neutral and thought the "give him time" argument made more sense. I wasn't excited about him from day one though, as some were.

I actually really like PFF. It isn't an excuse not to pay attention to games and really watch for yourself, but I like that they try to put a numerical grade on the performances and that kind of helps put a performance onto a comparable level, relatively speaking. Does that make sense?

I had him as my favorite Raven before he got drafted. I used to read mock drafts and absolutely just shake my head when he wasn't mocked to Baltimore, especially when they had Baltimore passing on him. I just knew he'd be a Raven. Got his jersey his rookie season in time for week 4

Not me.

Although it encourages me that they had Will Hill ranked 2nd last year, only because I've never seen him in anything other than a highlight montage. Still don't mean much though IMO.

Agree with you though about the change of hearts

I didn't reply to this thread. I know my replies were somewhere, but here's an old thread that has a bunch of interesting opinions on the pick of Jimmy Smith on draft day:

...and this one...

And for the sake of fun, I also found this thread (note, it's not about Jimmy Smith, but a very interesting foreshadowing to the future!) A  Steve Smith thread, about Steve Smith supposedly wanting to come to Baltimore back in 2011!

CJ Mosley and Jimmy Smith are two great cornerstones to build the defense around.

I think it's safe to say Brandon Williams belongs among them as well.

I thought you took it to training camp? Which is long before week 4 or am I misunderstanding

BMore Bird has a player to be proud of.  Jimmy is elite due to his assignments on opposing team top shelf receivers. It shows us that D coaches have confidence. I wonder if Pees will assign him to Roddy or Julio this Sunday?

i liked jimmy more cause of his size, but petterson really was the top corner, he came from a really good program, his speed and toughness, and if i had to pick again it would still be jimmy smith,he is turning the corner,

Peterson was and is overrated to me because of his extreme athleticism and ball skills. In college, he played across from Claiborne, a true college shutdown corner, so Peterson got quite a few plays thrown his way. He didn't have to play good technique or coverage because his elite athleticism allowed him to just make a play om the ball. He's getting burned a lot in the pros

Definitely Julio. Julio is the most explosive receiver in the NFL and is the bigger threat

Man  I like your loyalty to #22.  I'm a Jus guy  I hope he gets a few touches and a nice 20 yard run after a catch in the flat with a  TD.  Perhaps the first TD. That would set the tone.  Then when ATL gets the ball back a Jimmy Smith intercept back for another TD. If we were in a bar in Fells Point the two of us would be charged.

That would be pretty awesome. Juice might be able to get some good work in this game. The linebackers aren't great in Atlanta, but the corners are, so maybe use Juice to lighten them up a bit

A few other fan favorites are getting their own threads, so I thought I'd make one for my favorite player.

He's probably one of the NFL's best players that no one is talking about. He's PFF's seventh best cornerback this season, playing lights out football against every team he faces.

Since I have not yet renewed my PFF subscription, I can only post the worst case scenario for his stats.

He has allowed 18 receptions on (at worst) 31 targets for 135 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. At worst, he's allowed 58% of the passes thrown his way to be completed for 4.2 YPA, and a passer rating of 55. Before this week, he was number one in terms of yards per coverage snap by a good quarter yard.

I recently read a Bleacher Report article that said that shutdown corners are ones that alter a game plan and shift the offensive focus, and the author named Peterson, Sherman, Revis (obviously), but also Trufant and Terrell Brown. A lot of the comments were along the lines of, "If that's the case, why isn't Jimmy Smith on this list?" Most of them weren't even Ravens fans. It's awesome

I truly hope the Ravens lock him up this off season to a long deal. He's way too valuable to not be here. Hopefully this season is one where he gets the recognition nationally that he deserves.

I'm right there with you bud. So much so that I got my Jimmy Smith jersey this offseason and wear it with PRIDE!!

He came on last season facing the likes of Megatron, Antonnio Brown, Aj Green, BMarsh and gave up ONE TD to that group(technically) that was the hail marry to Aj. That's when I realized that this guy is a BALLER! The one thing that he needs to do go to get his recognition is to get his hands on the ball more: record more PBU's and ultimately INT's.

Need to catch the easy ones, lol.

Had a pretty good game overall holding down Julio for the most part.

I think I saw him allow one catch, but even then, I'm not sure. He was spectacular today, outside of the dropped interception. My siblings gave me crap for that one
