JJ is not Dynomite

53 posts in this topic

Jacoby Jones signed a 4 year 12mm contract. he has had memorable plays for the ravens but i think he's done as far as flacco having confidence in throwing to him in key situations. especially with aiken coming into the mix who appears to have very good hands.

the concern is that we may need to keep JJ because of the salary cap issues. we will have dead money for rice and pitta next year and we need to resign mcphee and jimmy smith. in retrospect the deal given JJ looks to be a mistake.

I disagree. Jones will retire a Raven. He doesent have the flashy numbers but in the end he makes the big clutch plays when we need it. Most of our WR have dropped passes for us when we really need it. But Jones needs to play better regulary though and that return he had yesterday was good and will hopefully get through this rough patch.

Also he can dance.

He hasn't done anything this year, plus he's been making bad decisions on the KR. He had one good return in what 3 games?? He looks slow and indecisive. Keep Aiken and Camp as 3rd WR. Marlon is hurt right?

Uh, he hasn't been clutch at all this year. In fact he's been the complete opposite. It's true he made some great plays in our Super Bowl run but he's done nothing amazing lately except a nice return yesterday. I think you're giving him credit on past performance as a barometer that he'll be safe. I don't think he's safe at all.

Ha did you say jones was clutch?

I guess that rocky mountain rainbow will pay him dividends for the rest of his career

He also had the catch in detroit that set us up for a game winning FG and the big return vs the viking with under 2 mins left in the game last year. You can't just judge him by these first 6 games. Before this season he made alot of big plays in crucial moments of games for us.If/when he breaks out of this slump he'll be a huge asset for us.

I don't disagree but he's in a slump and it's certainly not improving despite every effort to fix it. He's not going anywhere this year, but I think you consider parting with him next year if he continues to struggle this year and doesn't have any clutch plays like he's generated before.

Only time I want to see him is back returning kicks/punts.

When will we be able to afford to cut him? He's had some great moments here and he's a funny guy, but it would be best for the team. I know he just resigned, so I'm assuming after next season we would be off the hook without suffering anything?

He cab be cut next year with a $700k savings.

Just looked up the stats for JJ. They are terrible. In 6 games he has been targeted 12 times and has only 4 receptions. This makes him the lowest ranked WR in the NFL who has played all 6 games thus far this season. There is no way he is here next year if he does not get some really impressive numbers during the rest of the year. Why would we even want to hang on the a WR that is way below par?

Torrey was on the hot seat last week and had a breakout game. Now, it's JJ's turn to be called out by

Coach Harbaugh. If he responds, he'll be fine. If not, he'll be a very expensive punt returner for the remainder of the year. IMO, he has great instincts after catching the ball but he needs a lot more

work on the Jugs machine. He still tends to catch passes like a punt returner --- using his hands &

arms in close to his body instead of extending his arms and snatching the ball like a basketball player would. I think his best days are still ahead of him as a receiver. Some of Steve Smith is bound to rub off on him by the end of the season --- just in time for the playoffs.

Jacoby has had a dreadful season, that can't be disputed. But has he not earned our patience for a 2nd chance? I believe he has, and I feel the front office feels that way as well. He's a positive guy and a threat any time he touches the ball as a kick returner, and lets face it, the cap ramifications of cutting him aren't in our favour.

I'm not sure anyone is saying we cut him this year. If so, yeah, that makes little sense. I think he goes next year though.

That and the absolutely sick spin move he put on the 49r DB to end the 1st half of the super bowl, along with taking the opening 2nd half kick to the house.

So, basically being the difference maker in a Super Bowl, along with the Mile High Miracle, has immortalized him as a Raven.

But this is a league of "what have you done for me lately". The Ravens organization has not proved to be too sentimental, so if they feel like he's out lived his usefulness, we'll find out ... but that's next year. This year, since he's going to be a Raven until our 2014 completes, I'd sure like to see him make some new contributions.

Yeah, I think Jones will stick around until after the draft and perhaps into camp. He won't be cut solely for salary but for performance. I do think we'll give him every shot but his seat will be hot.

Random thought, but I wonder if we could look at trading him.

To me, I'm looking at his struggles in Houston and I think he's just a bad fit for what we do, compared to the days of the vertically-based Air Coryell. With Cam and Caldwell, being quick was huge and made him an incredible splash play guy in an offence that made its money off splash plays, but now he needs to be a smoother route runner with reliable hands and he's never been that. I also wonder if that's starting to get to his head for the punt and kick returns.

If that's the case, I'm not convinced he'll be able to turn it around any time soon after eight years in the league. And it may be better for him and us to see if a team with a more vertical offence like the Vikings or Cardinals have an interest for a seventh rounder or something.

Wow, folks have some short memories, lol.  With 8:56 left in the 4th qtr. after Daniels caught a pass on third down for 6yds., Jacoby caught a clutch pass at the 30 yrd. line taking it down to the 20 to set up the TD by Forsett. Just sayin'!

Ya, I'm with yah. But I do get the sense that a lot of fans are done with Jacoby. He will be on this team for the remainder of the season, I'm very certain of that. He's just hit a mental roadblock where absolutely nothing is working, but all he needs is one big play and he's back.

I think Jacoby will continue to struggle until late in the year. Then, he will catch a long TD in the playoffs, prompting everyone to assume "he's not a regular season WR but he's playoff threat" or something stupid like that.

However, he's never been asked to be the #1 WR here. So if said circumstance did arrive, would that not justify his season/contract ... I mean, isn't playoff time when it truly matters?

We have money to spend - it's okay if 3 or 4 million of it isn't as productive. I'm not insisting Jacoby should be let go, I like him. And this is coming from King Jacoby Hater the moment we signed him. I like him as a player and person enough to want him on our team, and when he finally gets his mojo back, at least he'll provide a subtle change in the way teams will have to defend us.

A couple weeks ago I said that I gave up on Jacoby Jones. You know what? I love that guy. I'm not going to throw in the towel yet. Torrey Smith to a certain extend (not as bad as Jacoby) was having a few off weeks. He got it together and scored two touchdowns and made a few catches. As one of the most loyal fanbases, in my opinion, in the league, I think we need to show support. He is only one year removed from looking like a great wide receiver. Remember before Trawick injured him, he was catching everything. Jacoby just needs to get his confidence back and he will be the Dragonfly again.

Thats what I been saying but people look at stats in the end. Whatever. I don't see Jacoby leaving next year.

Here's the problem I have with this...

Can you name a single other player on this team that COULD NOT make that exact same play? I mean what is really that impressive about it? Flacco put the ball on his hands, he caught it, spun around and went up the sideline.

Isn't that play sort of the MINIMUM requirement for an NFL caliber receiver? I mean I suppose we can call it "clutch" because he actually caught the football, but then again, he's an NFL receiver, meaning he's supposed to actually catch the football.

Send Jacoby long. He is not a 3rd down possession reciever .I cringe when we throw to him on 3rd down.

Aiken and Marlon both have much better hands .

For third down and 5 , I say Smith Sr,Daniels,Torrey,Aiken ,Camp,Marlon,Jacoby in roughly that order.

Is there any chance if Marlon is healthy the Ravens actually make Jacoby a healthy scratch for this game. I don't know if the Ravens feel confident with campanaro at kick or punt returner but I know he can at least catch punts and kicks. After seeing that catch by camp I'd love to see him get more playing time. Especially with Kubiak's offense there isn't necessarily that need for 2 major deep threats, and with what Steve Smith has done he essentially has provided a deep threat this year along with Torrey. I'd much rather have a guy in there who can be another dependable 3rd down/slot threat than an undependable receiver who has been struggling in the return game as well save for a good return last week. I don't want to say i've given up but sometimes when something is taken away from you, you come back that much harder. Maybe thats what Jacoby needs
