Dissin' The Towel

36 posts in this topic

As well all got to see yesterday, some of the Titans (being the classy bunch that they are) decided to wipe their noses and stomp on the Steeler's terrible towel. Here's DJ Gallo's reaction:

NFL Hangover: Week 16
You have to laugh, though, at people getting all bent out of shape over a towel. "Oh no, sir! Now you have stepped over the line! Spitting on my 4-year-old son in the bathroom and calling my wife a $@*%* is one thing. But stepping on my most cherished little yellow cloth? How dare you! You will pay!" But hey, for whatever reason, people cherish those towels. It's like when in college, my roommate used my bath towel one morning. It was an honest mistake -- it looked just like his. But that's not the point. The point is, even several years later, he still can't figure out who set his car on fire or what got on his toothbrush that gave him a severe bacterial infection.
If an opposing teams fan feels the need to swing around the laundry, they get what they get. I don't blame them, it's the Titans House. If someone comes to your house and taunts you, what would you do?

Don't get me wrong, I hate the steelers and all. I still think that just wasnt right though.

Show some class. I never have liked Lendale White for some reason, that just added fuel to the fire.

Part of me did enjoy it, but it's still a classless move. I used to like the Titans once they moved out of our division, but I'm starting to dislike them again.

The only people I would thoroughly enjoy watching disrespect the towel would be Ravens players, but they wouldn't stoop that low.

....or would they?

I agree with the poster that basically said if you bring your stupid towels into someone else's house, you get what you deserve. If the Titan had done that IN Pittsburgh it would be different (and disrespectful), but since it was in his house, good for him.

As a Steeler fan, I don't think you can possibly understand how much those towels are despised throughout the rest of the NFL. Fans of all other teams have been subjected to having them waved in our faces, etc., too many times. We're sick of it and would very much appreciate you leaving them at home when you come to visit. Barring that, they're going to be man-handled at every opportunity.

It's PATHETIC the Steelers would even need ANY type of motivation for a another Tennesse game in THE PLAYOFFS. Sounds like your discounting your teams intencity to me. :P

Hey, I would have taken one of those towel into the rest room and dropped a massive dump then wiped my behind with it and threw it out on the field. That is what I think of those towels, use them for what they are made for! :o

I don't understand what's so special about the damn towels. If they are so precious to you, leave them in a trophy cabinet at home, don't bring them to a football game and whirl them in the face of angry men. Seriously, what do you people expect to happen when you do that? At very least, you can't complain when something like that happens. Even Bill Cowher was blubbering about it. It's so ridiculous.

And what exactly does it represent, SP268?

Also, I think you were slightly missing my intended point, I meant if they meant so much to you, then why bring them to another team's stadium and intentionally aggravate the opposition's players and fans? And then complain when they are 'disrespected'! It just seems a tad hypocritical to claim that you have been disrespected when you're purposely trying to annoy a team and it's fanbase in their house.

the towel is not intended to annoy it is intended to show our team where we are in the stands.....it shows them we are there for them wherever they are playing

if they annoy you im sorry....but thats not the point.......the reason other fans hate them is because they work.....they give our team homefield support no matter where they play

Well, T.J. Houshmandzadeh did do something similar when the Bengals beat the Steelers in 2005, but the Steelers got their revenge on the field later in the season, even though the towel incident then wasn't nearly as magnified.

Maybe the difference was that it was one player as opposed to multiple players?

Either way, unfortunately, this is what some of your Steelers brethren would refer to as "furthering the rivalry." It arguably falls under the same category as trash-talking; it's disrespectful and unnecessary, but it happens, and it's an example of people taking things too far.

And, well, some people consider trash-talk as "furthering the rivalry," so you see what I'm getting at?

This is why there's no room for unsportsmanlike conduct between fans AND players. When the players do it, the fans will idiotically try and follow suit -- and vice versa. So, sadly, I don't want to attribute this incident to karma, but it's almost like what goes around, comes around.

And really, the only people you can really blame are, again, some of the lesser members of your fanbase. Sorry. Only a small segment spoils the bunch.
