Week 5 - Baltimore Ravens (3-1) at Indianapolis Colts (2-2)

2,568 posts in this topic

Just saw a replay on NFL Network. Sky-view on the sideline. A safety was coming over the top. Joe could have led him a little better, but Torrey would have gotten drilled. So, it's make a tough catch and get out of bounds or make the catch and have to hold on after getting completely blindsided.

he'd likely have dropped it on the hit then

i never said that, i said i disagreed as in cutting him would be stupid, sure he's regressing - thats natural for a LB getting older, even Lewis regressed the last few years he was here, but he is still good as a starter and our best coverage LB, he's still more than capable of being a starter for this team

So, you're the dude that sold us out in Sunday's loss?  SMH!!

@Mili

You could look at it that way or you could say me posting that lucky clover pool is the reason we had so many lucky things happen to us in that game.Think about it.How often does a team have 3 turnovers on the road against the #1 offense in the league and not get blown out? That was my lucky clover at work. How often does a team thats down on the road with under 2 mins left in the game and the home team running the clock out inside of their own 10 yard line find a way to get a turnover?Again, that was my lucky clover fighting to keep us in the game. You guys should be thanking me.

I was being facetious just in case anyone who reads that post can't tell...

No way... Daryl Smith is playing well....  Mosley is overshadowing him right now, but he is absolutely playing solid ILB.

Let's have this same discussion at the end of the year. I've watched a lot of film from the pittsburgh and carolina games. I'm gonna rewatch the Colts game, but I like your feedback.

I politely disagree, as Daryl has looked average quite a few times this year.

With that said, he had a good game from what I saw Sunday, so that's a plus. He hasn't been playing well since week 1, though. This was his best performance to date.

Aside from getting blown up on that first big run of the game, he looked pretty handy this week. Didn't make too many mistakes, covered his guy well (as far as I saw) and even tipped the ball for CJ to pick off. I agree that outside that game he's looked disappointing this season (to put it nicely), but hopefully this week's showing wasn't an anomaly.

Yeah, no doubt. Too many tackles down the field after he lets his guy get open and blows the coverage. That's my biggest gripe. I didn't expect him to be great against the run but I expected more against there pass.

I am wondering if he added weight.

Check the stats page.... Those say otherwise...

http://www.baltimoreravens.com/team/team-statistics.html

While he may have the stats, I don't think that's truly indicative of his performance because you have no measurement for how many tackles were made after he blew an assignment, how many were made as a result of him not being strong enough to tackle the guy himself but required on help from a DL or DB. He has a considerable amount of assisted tackles as well. Almost half his tackles are assisted. He's also often getting dragged for a few yards, too.

I'm thinking he added weight to play MIKE. That's my guess and I feel like it's affected his coverage.

It's an interesting question...

Is Smith playing worse than he was last year? Probably, but then again, he was probably one of the better MLBs in football last season, and he never was before that, so probably some regression is natural.

But... is it more of the case of Mosley playing so well that he's sort of overshadowing Daryl at this point? I mean I see the same games you guys see... Mosley is all over the field. He's in the backfield, he's on the sidelines, he's in coverage, etc.

I mean we have to remember... last season, Daryl was sharing his MLB duties with the likes of Bynes and McClain (guys who are no longer on this team). While none of them are terrible players, they aren't even in the stratosphere in terms of talent or capabilities as CJ.

So, its possible that Daryl just simply isn't the best MLB on the team anymore, and that he's just being overshadowed.
