Per NFL Network, Rex Ryan is officially unemployed.

Edited to add - apparently Idzik has been fired too.

So....  most likely, so far we have:

Jim Harbaugh

Rex Ryan

John Idzik

Mike Smith

I'm also thinking

Trestman in Chicago

Philbin in Miami maybe too...  that's iffy, but possible.

I remember back in 2008 when everyone was talking about how John was the wrong choice, an unknown, and the 3 guys whose names floated around the most were Jason Garrett, Mike Smith, and Rex Ryan.  Now 2 are gone and John is the only 1 of the four with a ring as HC.

Forcing Jim Harbaugh out shows the lunacy of the 49ers. The best thing to happen to them in the last 15 years (and their only success in that period) came with him. After one 8-8 season he's gone? The players liked him, from what I've heard the last few weeks and what they did Sunday afternoon...

They better have a good replacement lined up, not just one who will be subservient to the GM or whomever QQ'd about it.

Well, that didn't take too long. Marc Trestman has been let go by Chicago. I guess his experience with the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL didn't translate well in the NFL...

I think the Bears should give Rex a look. He knows defenses and would restore that teams old identity.

As to the other firings, Rex Ryan was a long time coming. 26 wins in the last 4 years, -309 point differential in the last 3, and the bravado wore thin when it wasn't being backed up. Poor team chemistry, awful QB play, overpaid FAs, and tabloid stories are the legacy of his Jets - how long ago those playoff runs feel.

His GM, Idzik, seemed more like a pacifier than an asset. Kind of a trial run to see Rex with a different GM for a couple of years. They continued their decline into stinkiness...

Mike Smith, eh, could see this both ways. Atlanta is a historically terrible franchise who had mild success with Smith. Maybe it's his fault his team is soft, though. However, his team was soft when they were going to the playoffs - I'm more likely to put this on his GM, we'll get to him later. Smith looks gone.

Thomas Dimitroff is hilarious! Think of a hipster-wannabe who puts more product in his hair than an 80s hair band and is nearing the ripe age of 50 - then make that guy your GM. He got it right early with Matt Ryan - choker that he is - and Michael Turner and some pieces already on the Falcons but, wow, how a little success goes to your head. Trading a kings ransom for Julio Jones, who is supremely talented but has spent almost 25% of his time not playing. Revolving door at cornerback and one of the worst defenses in the league. OL has suffered, gave money to a washed up Steven Jackson and other bad FAs. He built the team offense-heavy and didn't put an OL into place. A bunch of flashy skill players and nothing else will net you crappy seasons. He built the team incorrectly and they're paying. There are conflicting reports whether he stays or goes. Should be gone but I won't mind Atlanta stinking up the league.

Bears canned both their GM and coach. I would've made a case for Trestman except for the insane turn of events with their OC Aaron Kromer being an 'unnamed source' slamming Jay Cutler. Kromer went unpunished when he should have been fired on the spot. That's on the HC and Trestman blew it. Kromer was also with the Saints and was interim coach when the whole bountygate/Vicodin crap was going on - seeing a trend. The GM, meh, no opinion.

Joe Philbin is a lame duck. Not a very good head coach. Miami can keep him around another year but they'll find out.

Tom Coughlin has earned the right to stay until he wants to retire. Don't think those issues fall on him.

That's my rambling opinions on the matter(s).

All they need a shot of Jim's dose to make the franchise historic turnaround......

I wish Jim stay in NFL....

Yup, it's almost outrageous how he was forced out. Said in the post above, 49ers better have the next big thing in the waiting because they threw out the best thing they've had in years.

edit - and I say all this without even being a Jim Harbaugh fan. Acted insane on the sidelines having literal tantrums at bad calls. Plus, the comparisons to John and Jim being considered 'better' were annoying. But, man, he was a good coach and turned around the 49ers and definitely Alex Smith.

The owner in Miami already announced Philbin is staying. Even though I think he's the most uninspiring coach I've ever seen. I think their afraid no one better will come there.

I never liked that he turned on Alex Smith and sent him packing...  I think you were looking at two completely different kinds of QB's.  Pocket passer vs. Read Option.  The other thing was that stardom went to Colin's head... and I think Harbaugh helped with that by doing what he did...  He made him the glory boy.  Didn't work to keep him level headed.  Kaepernick became another loose cannon with his stardom... his behavior, his GQ stuff...  his calendar boy attitude...  and I think that along with Harbaugh's  outbursts and the inconsistent play of the team the past 2 seasons, along with alienating some good players, that was his death sentence.  They went from being a Super Bowl powerhouse to this....  Look at this year's season.

There were a few players that just seemed to disappeared.  We were just talking last week about Crabtree.  Another player that was a good player and became non-existent.   Once Boldin came into the fold, other really good receivers were just not used.

Maybe Jim is an excellent coach....  but one thing is for sure.  None of us were in the building to see what was happening.  But almost everyone has seen glimpses of it... He was a lunatic on the sidelines.  Probably alienated the refs too.... John doesn't air his emotions in the same way.... not even close.  I am just glad we have John.

edit:  I think they have an idea of where they want to go....  otherwise I don't think it wouldn't have happened this way.

I think Harbaugh got enticed with the physical prowess of Kaepernick. 6'4 QB, 230 lbs + durable, fast and mobile, can throw deep - on paper he looks like a beast. Obviously, Kaepernick caught the bug himself with all his GQ modeling, beard man-scaping, and attempts at high fashion lol. However, poor accuracy, decision-making, and ego got in his way.

Smith to Kaepernick is like upgrading from your old reliable Camry to the flashy European sports car - except when the Sports car breaks down its no use to anyone. Harbaugh saw the chance to go explosive and took it, paid off for awhile. Smith is old reliable but there's a reason KC didn't have a TD to a WR all season.

Obviously the 49ers fell flat this year but I still think Jim Harbaugh is a really good coach and turned the 49ers from Troy/Alex Smith laughing-stocks to SB contenders.

never like Jim myself, but he knows what he's doing to get a team to rally and excel.  He is an excellent coach, and if I am 49ers owner, I would kick out the GM and CEO before Jim....

They're probably closer to the owner than he is. Just speculating. Their owner, Jed York, is a clown, though.

Ever since Eddie gone and replaced by his sister and brother in law York, their franchise have been going down the hill.  Their son Yed York doesn't know crap about football.  They were lucky to find Jim to turn the losing franchise around, and now they want to burn the bridge.  The idea that came around is with this group of talents anybody can win. The same situation happened for the Cowboys Jimmy Johnson.

You can have the best army in the world but if you can't lead them, they are useless....

My thoughts exactly. 49ers sat on Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Alex Smith (talent was somewhere down there), Patrick Willis, Ahmad Brooks, Delanie Walker, etc, etc and had nothing to show for it. Under Harbaugh they won and those players were highly productive.

We'll see how they do with someone else.

How has Joe Philbin not been fired?  He's an awful coach.

There are a lot of good jobs available this year.  Even Oakland isn't as bad as it's traditionally been, with Carr looking like he could be the guy.

Why is that? He had to start over with a whole new OLine and Tannehill is only an average QB. Plus Marino had a meeting with Steven Ross and right after that it was announced Philbin was staying on as HC.lol. Blame Dan the Man. Mike Wallace has also not performed to his ridiculous contract.

I also think there was some kneejerking in Atl. Smith took them to the playoffs his 1st 5 yrs I believe then had 2 bad yrs. Sometimes its the groceries but they still kept Dimitroff as far as I know.

Trestman? Meh the Cutler did him in. They're gonna have a hard time finding a good HC becuz they gonna know that Cutler has to be the starting QB and thats gonna turn a lot of candidates off.

Ryan the good ol boy. I really hate to see him go and you can tell the players loved him by the way they gave him that Gatorade bath.

And Jim. Too much headclashing going on in the FO and it was like they was trying to set him up for failure and with 20/20 hindsight I believe he made an egregious error by switching from Alex to Kaep. It's like buying that sexy stock and getting good returns at the beginning but then watching it tank.

Maybe already addressed somewhere else, but does Jim's exit from SF mean we are gonna put a hold on the planned preseason joint practices with that team from here on out?

So Mike Smith gets canned in Atlanta but Thomas "trade everything for one player" Dimitroff stays? Arthur Blank needed to realize the reason the team is neglected because he traded away so many picks for one player and thus no depth to the team. It's why when players get injured, they can't overcome it.

Apparently he is going to help pick the next coach too so in a few years when he hasn't built a solid team around that new coach, wonder if the new coach will be the one to take the fall like Smith did.

The search to replace Jim Harbaugh begins within the NFC West. The 49ers have asked permission to interview Seahawks DC Dan Quinn and Cardinals DC Todd Bowles. The 49ers also have interest in Broncos OC Adam Gase, as does the Falcons.

Falcons also asked for permission to talk to Bowles. They sent another one to Detroit, asking to speak with T. Austin. Schefter reported this but I can't find a video to post the link.
