Let's talk about Pernell McPhee

totally agree. Interior pass rushers are hard to find

I'm on the same page with you guys I just think next year is gonna be a tough year to give him a contract. Much like Kruger, we'd be paying a guy entree money to be dessert. I don't think we can afford to do that and I don't think it's fair to McPhee. I think the best (not ideal, but best given the circumstances) scenario for both sides would be for him to go be a beast as a starter for someone else, give us the 3rd round comp pick, and re-stock in the draft. Ozzie found McPhee in the 5th round, I have confidence he can do it again.

Agreed. I think he's essentially a luxury item. We will make him a decent offer, and if he takes it he takes it.

He probably won't be extremely high on the FA priority list, and luxury items are only as affordable as we make them.

Thank you all for turning the conversation back to McPhee sorry if some of your posts were removed in the crossfire

Yeah, back on subject but I think it's very realistic a 4-3 team likes what they see and offer him a very nice deal. His ability to rush the passer shouldn't be ignored or thrown to the wayside simply because he is a situational player.

The allure, I feel, for McPhee on the open market is a 4-3 Tampa 2 team could love his versatility and want him as their 4-3 RE or use him as a 4-3 DT on passing downs, very similar to how we use him. That's a huge bonus, especially if they have a good run stuffer next to him already. I think he could be a dominant player with Lovie Smith next to McCoy, whether he's at DE or DT.

McPhee next to McCoy would be lethal.

The Buccs would be brilliant to make that move but I don't have a lot of faith in their ability to scout. I could see the Patriots making a play for him though and they would be very wise to do so.

Absolutely. Combine that with David and Michael Johnson on the other side and you have a legitimate front 7 with some excellent pieces for what Smith likes in his defense. They also have money to spend, if I'm not mistaken. So they can definitely make a play for him and pay him a nice sum if they wanted.

See, there are two issues with what you are saying here. It's not a luxury to have a guy who can come in and play 500+ snaps rushing the passer from various alignments. That's a big part of what makes our defense tick. He also has to be close to the top in FA priorities. There might be a couple RFAs ahead of him, but the only UFA that is close to him in importance is Torrey Smith.

He sure is. Rewatching the Carolina game reinforces what he does for us.

I thought his Cincy game was underrated around here. He didn't get to Dalton much, but he was getting into the backfield quite a bit, and that's something that won't show up on any stats sheet.

I'd love to keep him on, but I think someone else overpays. Only takes one team to do it, and I wouldn't be surprised if Ozzie put a bit more focus on that 2016 class this offseason.

Not sure if this has been thrown out there yet but McPhee has graded as the 6th best OLB this season according to PFF. He has been all over the place for us and hopefully we can either A: re-sign him or B: get a nice comp pick out of him

Na he's overrated.. Doesn't have a position and doesn't have a sack

Imo, this game against the Colts is a statement game for McPhee. Playing in front of the man that drafted him, for a contract, with Suggs banged up. He'll be lined up all over the field but I can't wait to see him over center going against Shipley in obvious passing situations. He should win that match up 100% of the time.

I'll say no he won't, only because there's not much room there and Shipley will have help on a particular side.  If it was a straight up rushing drill, he'd beat Shipley every single time.

Ok let's say it's 3rd and 8 and you have Suggs, McPhee, Upshaw and Dumervil on the line in that order. Who do you double?

McPhee. Interior pressure is far more dangerous than outside pressure.

Totally fair point. So to my initial assertion, if you're doubling McPhee instead of Suggs or Dumervil that situation, you're making a huge case for McPhee as a talent. I truly believe he is the X factor in this game for that reason.

Dumervil, who granted is older, got just over $5M a season with pretty small amounts of guaranteed money. McPhee has basically never been a starter, has about 4 sacks in the last two seasons, and has never been anything more than a situational role player.

He MIGHT get that money from a desperate team, but I doubt it, and he certainly won't get that money from us. I think he leaves for less than that, and likely goes to play somewhere where he has a better opportunity at starting and at playing time.

God I wish. That guy is filthy rich just for showing up for half a season. I'm glad for what he did for us during the super bowl run, but I'm also glad we didn't even entertain matching what the browns were throwing at him.

Wasn't even that big of a contract really...

Pernell McPhee was featured on the NFL show with post emeritus coach Brian Billik. Praise was thrown all over him due to his ability to slide through lanes. In turn the panel agreed the QB that stands up and lasts longest will be the game winner. I believe McPhee's success is reletive to Pees

McPhee had another great game against the Colts. Extend him now!

Agreed, if the price is right we should do it. As long as those knees are okay. Try to front load the guaranteed money as well to avoid any accelerated bonuses if he gets hurt.

Where do you see his value? Do you think he gets a deal similar to a Michael Bennett or something a little friendlier on the cap, considering he's been a rotational player.

Its pretty much imperative we keep the only guy getting any pass rush but Ozzie still won't overpay a former 6th round pick.

I don't think draft status plays a role in Ozzie extending players.

And he's a former fifth round pick.

I don't think he will command that kind of money. More likely around the $4-5M a year range. The defense needs him though. He's the only guy who can bring interior pressure.

McPhee yesterday again showed up. Whether he stays or goes will depend on who values him more - Ravens as the most versatile player on our D or desperate team as the pure pass rusher. Unfortunately I think he'll be overpaid by someone.

I agree. Even going to the 5-6 mil range because the cap is going way up.

I'm not sure what some of you see in McPhee. "Retaining" him, him trying to "test the market"...some of you make it sound like he's hot commodity or something, like he's playing so well it'll be hard to keep him in Baltimore, like he's gonna have 31 other options once the season ends.

He's a role player with a bum knee who doesn't have a true position, who hasn't done anything to be honest this season. He's not a pass rushing OLB and he's not a D-Lineman. He lacks explosiveness/moves to rush the passer as a LB (not that he ever was a sack artist) and he lacks size/strength (and a healthy knee) to be an every down DE, especially in the 3-4.

I'm actually hoping we move on from him after the season in order to grab a true pass rusher or a true D-Lineman to add some depth. McPhee is a guy we don't know what to do with.

Oh? Well then
