Personal Fouls to be Reviewable?

11 posts in this topic

If anyone remembers, in the off-season Bill Belichick tried to get a new rule change added to make any ruling on the field,  challenged by a Head Coach. That did not go over well, and it failed to be added in 2014. Now it seems there is "building momentum" toward a rule change that would allow personal fouls to be challenged by a coach in 2015.

Personally, while a step in the right direction and I mean this is about two steps in the right direction. For coaches to have to use challenges to get a helmet to shoulder hit overturned because the ref called it helmet to helmet, no way. If anything there needs to be someone at the stadiums in a booth that has instant access to the replay. He can review it, relay the info to the officials through the headset and boom the play stands or is reversed.

Thoughts?

As long as they don't get bonus challenges, extra challenges, foul challenges, tactical challenges or anything by any other name that would potentially stall the game further. It's long enough as it is.

JO, I prefer the later option, to have the booth signal down. In the case of a "helmet to helmet" call, there would be extra time between the play as it is for the booth to say go review it, overturn it themselves, or carry on (do nothing).

Even that wont matter until  the rule makes a little more sense.

I mean PHYSICALLY how do you tackle and lead with your shoulder but not your head ?

Even at that, all the ball carrier needs to do is take a half step this way and that way and now the tacklers head is dead center.  DING !!!!!!! 15 extra yards.

This off season some of these personal foul penalties need to be closely examined.

Challenging them is a step in the right direction.

The game has slowed down due to penalty calls.  Another minute of standby time really won't make that much of a difference. However, a booth signal down direct to the Referee would be advantagous when the zebra men confer and the assists their decision with camera angles not observed from human eyes. .

If they would just centralize everything instead of insisting on the referee leaving the field to go and review each play it would be fine. Little things like personal fouls could be reviewed and relayed down to the referee to correct in little or no time with minimal stoppage.

Wasn't sure where to put this but since DPI is almost considered a personal foul, I'll put it here. NFL Executive VP of Football Operations has come out and said that DPI may become 15 yard penalties instead of a spot foul. PFT also said this would be an alternative option instead of making DPI reviewable.

Side Note: The PFT Comment section never fails, love how all of them say how our offense goes out the window if this happens lol.

I remember a game from 2 or so years ago where James Ihedigbo Laid a massive hit on a bengal that was completely clean but was called a foul. These should be reviewable

That would be a dumb move and goes against what they tried to implement last year. Can you imagine the muggings that would occur if a DB knew he would only lose 15 yards for trying to prevent a big play? Like I said, just doesn't fit with trying to limit the DBs restricting the receivers ability to make a play on the ball.

This provoked an interesting thought. These refs are in their late 40s 50s and maybe 60s. They are trying to maintain speed and pace with some of the worlds fastest and strongest athletes. Therein lies a huge problem from the jump. Scientific fact will tell you that the cornea of any humans eye begins to detach at 40-41 years of age. While these guys may pass a vision screening, they may not see everything that they should when pushing their bodies and trying to pay attention. How can you not challenge the eyes of a man that may or may not have seen what happened on a play? The idea of not questioning a penalty or non call says that the refs are perfect in their abilities to perform their jobs but I say time and age dictates the opposite.

The NFL needs younger referees.
