What is the point of the reputation count?

6 posts in this topic

I don't understand the overall point of reputation count. I know for the article that the comment was placed in can be up or down voted and sorted accordingly but in terms of overall result of the reputation vote that confuses me. Does it go towards an overall count or anything?

Originally it was a way to 'self moderate' , but it never took off. People would neg people if they disagreed with them, disliked them, or were just trolling. Those of us on touch screens have noticed you can accidentally hit the (-) AND then there are groups of posters that don't like some -one will gang up and (-) them and (+) the people that are in their 'group'.

We tried to getting rid of it twice and the blog posters did not like that. It also caused an issue with the last software update and they had to re program some stuff.

Also the original reason we got rid of if was the whole bosses checking social media and people were freaking out with the negs counting on their profile. Now they are hidden and only admins can see the cumulative.

Can't even begin to tell you how many times I've accidentally negged a post because of a touch screen.

Reputation count may be part of the software but it is better to eliminate this facet as it is a reminder of experience on Yahoo.  Once people accustom themselves to this practice they become judge and jury rather than a participant.  Being a Ravens fan is a privelage.
