Filling the TE Spot: Merged

86 posts in this topic

I dont think we need to go shopping.

Putting Pitta on IR opens a slot for Will Hill any way.

It sucks, but I think we will be fine.

Juice is filling that spot as far as I can.tell

Yeah I really think Juice will fill in and Gilmore will get his chance as well.

I'd say that Findley is the top target right now.

I was thinking we bring in Finley for a workout to see if he's healthy in any way. Then again, since Juice is a hybrid TE/FB, we could move him to TE, bring back Leach to play FB.

Or we could give Gilmore the Flacco treatment(as someone referred to it as lol) and have Daniels and Gilmore in our two tight end sets.

Apparently, our friends at ESPN don't think Marlon at TE is such a crazy idea. They are reporting that he is, in fact, part of the committee we will use there to replace Pitta.

Just wanted to start this because I didn't think it appropriate to discuss in the Pitta injury thread.

So who's out there on the couch? Possible trade?

We don't need to go outside the organization Tank.  We have Juice who will be a beast and Daniels.  Then, don't forget we still have Gilmore.  Now is his chance to really step up and get some very serious and significant playing time to improve his game.  Having played football myself (back in the day...lol), the BEST way to improve your game is by playing in the game....NOT...just sitting on the pine!  Look at my Virginia Tech boy....the "rookie" CB Kyle Fuller out there w/the Bears.  Dude had 2 picks last week.  He'll get better and better the more he is on the field!  Get Gilmore on the field!!!

He's actually a good run blocker but I dunno how he will do against pass rushers. Lol. I'm not sure he could block a guy like Suggs, Dumervil, and other OLB.

I'm not necessarily for or against it. I'm just saying it looks as though he'll get a shot. Probably more of a "Move" TE.

I think the references to Marlon are that he can replace Pitta's production in the slot. I do not think anyone is suggesting that Marlon be an in-line TE.

Juice, OD, and Gilmore can all take on Pitta's TE responsibilities; and Marlon can offer some support being a big body coming from the slot.

I feel for Pitta, but we are in a much better position this year to replace him than last.

Yeah this is how I see it. I think Brown would be fine in the slot and that makes much more sense.

Pitta was good at finding soft spots and sitting down in zone coverage between the numbers. OD is also good at this, but we need Marlon/Gilmore/Juice to really get a feel for this as well.

From a man coverage standpoint, I do not actually think Pitta was that effective. I think he really excelled against zone coverage - and was just average against man. However, I think we can continue to beat man coverage with mismatches and misdirection out of the backfield; especially with Juice.

Daniels will now see many more snaps and will be TE1. Rarely (if ever) do you have sets that involve both a FB and 2 TEs, so Juice is going to float between being a FB and TE in 2 TE sets. Gilmore will always be on game day active roster, but I don't know that he's going to get a lot of snaps, but he'll obviously see more of the field than before.

No matter how you slice it, this is going to hurt. Kubiak's used Daniels over the middle but the times he's run plays that involve getting a TE the ball in space it has been Pitta. That would include the kind of play he got injured on. I believe that play was going to get some yards and was going to be a frequently used tool in our OCs tool box. Daniels doesn't have the speed/agility to be used in that way. Not sure if Juice fits that either.

We can try to replace his production, but there are a couple of very nice pages that have just been ripped out of the playbook.

I agree this is what is meant. The "TE" position is more than an inline position anymore. Brown can be that over-the-middle/redzone threat that Pitta was.

@RavensInsider Sources: Ravens trying out tight ends Kellen Davis, Matt Mulligan, Jake Murphy and Emmanuel Ogbuehi

Add Kellen Davis and Matt Mulligan to the list.  Maybe they feel that Crocket Gilmore isn't ready or they want him to focus on blocking?

Didn't we try out Matt Mulligan last year?

I don't get it. Supernaw is on the practice squad and knows the offense. Why is he even here if we're just going to pass him over and sign somebody off the street? I understand if it's a veteran but at least one of the guys listed is a rookie.

Absolutely. This is the time these young guys should get their shot. See what you have before you jump into some old guy on Medicare to fill in. Everyone says he's good. Let him have his chance to shine.
