Filling the TE Spot: Merged

86 posts in this topic

I am now thinking that Pitta is out, we really need some of these other guys to step up big.

I would love to see what Marlon Brown could do. He's got the height, let's give him a shot at TE.

What??????? Marlon Brown at TE? Close thread, ha.

I just face fisted lol.

I think Marlon could potentially help replace his production but Marlon is like 210 so unless the TE position is revolutionized, I don't see Marlon Brown being considered one.

Just wanted to start this because I didn't think it appropriate to discuss in the Pitta injury thread.

So who's out there on the couch? Possible trade?

i don't think we need to do anything really

Daniels is a good starter, he's shown already this year that he still has great hands and can make the tough catches, this gives Gilmore some more playing time that he could use and Juice will get more receptions too, we already had a debate as to whether keeping 3 was too much anyway, keeping just Daniels and Gilmore frees up a spot to add depth at another position

I think Juice will fill an H-back/pass-catching role as well. We saw what he can do against the Browns. He will be a much larger part of the offense going forward imo.

1) Give Gillmore the Joe Flacco treatment and push his career trajectory forward.

2) Use Jusczyk more.

3) Make a similar adjustment to the Patriots post-Hernandez's arrest and Gronk's 50th injury and change up a few two-TE sets for two-RB ones. I think we can have some fun keeping defences on their toes.

Dunno what we can really do if Daniels goes down. See if Tim Tebow will reconsider not playing TE?

We will probably just add Supernaw to the roster from practice squad but the top tight ends out their on the free agency market are Dustin Keller and  Jermichael Finley.

I love point number 1 lol. Didn't you know when no name players play well for Manning and Brady, it's because they're great qbs, but when flacco does it it's because they were such a hidden gem...

I was actually referencing Joe being a starter when Boller went down and turning out to be *ahem* a slight upgrade, though I have no doubts Joe will be fine at easing Crockett in.

IR Pitta and promote Supernaw. Simple.

Then use Juice and Gilmore a lot more. Gilmore will be a good TE. Underrated in my book. He's already proven himself an adequate blocker at the NFL level. We'll see if he's there as a receiver yet. I think he needs some developing as a pass catcher but I think he's at least adequate. Better than most think.

and yes... we'll see a lot more Juice, which is good.

Promote from within - either a PS guy or just use the wide receivers more.  And I believe Crockett Gilmore is a lot better than people realize - I think he's going to surprise some people this year.

I agree, he will be the 2nd TE. Big with decent hands.

During the times when Gilmore was pushed to perform at a high level, he's exceeded expectations. Despite only have a week of practice before it, he led the Senior Bowl in reception yards and scored the first touchdown of the game. I think he'll perform well as the backup tight end and take some of the pressure off of Daniels. Plus, Juice can come out of the backfield and run a lot of the routes that Rice used to. Between the two of them, they should be able to make up for the loss of Pitta.

Findley always had the size, experience, and good hands in the clutch, but why didn't any team even try him out during training camp?  The neck injury is an accident waiting to happen.  Still, it wouldn't hurt to bring him in for a try-out since he has the experience to start right away.  Owens is very good as a second TE, but his durability is questionable.  The hardest part of losing Pitta is his $16 million guarantee.

Juice looked good on that TD catch but he doesn't have the size to be the go-to guy that Pitta was for Flacco.

I'd say that Findley is the top target right now.

The Vikings released Jerome Simpson, who has problems, but still would be a serious competitor for the 3rd receiver spot.

I like the option to use Juice more, but it is still a long season and if they go for using him more, I just hope he has something left at the end of the season with all those extra snaps.

I wouldn't mind Finley as an outside solution. Strange nobody has signed him, though, even with the TE-needy Patriots out there. Finley would be my top guy if we were to sign a free agent. If we make a trade, I wouldn't mind taking Casey from the Eagles.

I don't think we have to make a move, though, for a significant player. I wouldn't mind promoting Supernaw, signing Finley, or any other move we could do. I think it should be considered because any injury to Daniels could be a really, really big problem and Daniels does have a hard time with health. I'm confident in the guys we have, but that should never prevent you from potentially improving your depth.

Not that it matters, but Joe was actually third in line behind Boller and Troy Smith.  Boller went down, Troy came down with a strange disease and the rest is history!

I do think they will get Crockett in there right away and I hope he shines. He's a big dude with some skills, but kinda raw. But I also think we will add another TE whether it be Supernaw or someone else. Which direction we head probably hinges on Crock's performance.

Bring Supernaw up from the PS and resign Overbay to rthe PS if he's available. I don't want Finley. I like our guys.

Harbaugh did state that we're looking at FA options, which means Supernaw probably isn't their first option.

That's right, though the point is that other stuff pushed Joe into a starter's role and it turned out to be arguably the best thing for the franchise. ^_^

I think Gillmore will surprise some people, but I also think he'll have a very slow start while he learns to run with the first-stringers and all. Not that it's a bad thing per se, but I think we should be ready to wait on his results.

Same story if we bring in a veteran, actually, although their reasons would be a bit different. I'd expect them to look like Dallas Clark for the first few weeks while they built chemistry with Joe.

Yeah, I'd rather not promote him because he could look too good and get attention from other teams and then you have to make a tough choice next year. You also might not be able to stash him again.

Also, Overbay doesn't have PS eligibility anymore, IIRC. Hey, I have an idea. How about we sign a really good FA TE from MD. You know? Matt Furstenburg! I heard he is a beast.

no way, we've got a ton of receivers on the roster, no need to add another WR, especially one that is inconsistent and has troubles like Simpson

Gilmore and Juice need to step up. Waste of a pick I feel. I'd rather wait to draft someone, cause this injury could end Pitta's career.
