Official Vent Thread: Who needs to walk home and who doesn't !

I think we've just played against some real quality teams with some quality tight ends. In week one we had Eifert and even Gresham is solid. Week two he struggled against the run which I expected. Week three we had some big fast RBs to stop as well as a big tight end. Daryl's not playing bad, but the other teams are playing well, if you take my meaning.

Yeah I get that for sure. Gresham and Eifert is a heck of a duo, I'd even say Gresham is the better TE. Then Heath Miller and a stud RB in Bell and then the Browns. So the competition he has faced has definitely been top notch, especially with 3 straight divisional games.

Weren't you the one who always said you would have rather had Mo Wilkerson?

No. I never said that. I definitely wanted Jimmy the most that draft. I was very thrilled when we got him.

I honestly don't recall who. I do remember people saying they wanted him over Jimmy though. Go look at one of the old Jimmy Smith threads from a year ago or a little older. I'm sure you'll find it. It wasn't me though. I'm a huge fan of his.

With that said, I really liked Wilkerson as well. I wouldn't have minded either guy because Wilkerson has turned out very well, but I think Jimmy Smith has become special as well. Because of our need at CB at the time, I was desperate for Jimmy. Glad he proved me right so far.

Good to see our coaches know what is wrong, hopefully they can get it figured out and have a big game against Carolina. We should be able to get some pressure going so I am optimistic that the secondary will be a lot better today.

Yeah I wasn't around here at the time but I can't fault someone for that, great 3-4 DE although Smith has certainly worked out as well. I was just looking through the 2011 draft a couple days ago, it was pretty stacked overall especially on defense.

The 2011 draft was probably one of the best drafts in a very long time.

almost certain gabe wanted him. But what has wanting another player got to do with supporting Jimmy? I've missed part of this conversation

This is disturbing. Mainly because it is yet another guy that we signed to a nice contract that is either suspect in his play, is hurt or is gone. Looking at those guys, plus some of the other contracts we have in place, I am fearing a cap avalanche over the next couple of years.

Moriarty is going to have his work cut out for him going forward.

I wonder if this will be like the season where we cleaned house the first day, McGahee, Heap etc.

Yeah because who needs a secondary when you've got a good defensive line... or something like that... or maybe not...

that's a legitimate reason to get upset. Wilkerson is a great player as well.

But what i recall was virtually everyone except a small minority just weren't happy with jimmys play. I can't recall many constantly saying they wished we took mo overhim during those early years.

Just like with elam, people sre critising him but they aren't saying we should have took x y z instead of him.

It was like one person would say they wish we had taken Wilkerson (maybe Gabe like you said) and then a lot of people would chime in about how they wish we had Wilkerson. It wasn't the board as a whole suggesting it, more like people piggybacking on one other person's wishes.

They wanted Wilkerson because he had played much better to date than Jimmy before the playoff run. Hell, he's a great player for sure, but I would still take Jimmy, and I'm sure the people who used to want Wilkerson would still take Jimmy, especially when you consider the value of a good cornerback, especially in this secondary.

i wouldn't swap them, but if the ravens did for some odd reason i wouldn't be annoyed either both are great players that i think will be the best at their respective positions in a few years, if they aren't already.

I also meant that gabe was big on mo pre draft. But i can't ever recall him childishly saying he was right and we should have took mo instead.

He with myself grim and others were in the stand behind Smith group through his troubles

I'm sure Rex would love to swap the two with how well Sheldon is doing and with how poorly his secondary is playing at the cornerback spots.

I don't actually recall who it was, but someone was really into Mo and really wanted him over Jimmy when Jimmy was struggling. I've probably been Smith's biggest supporter from pre-draft to today. Absolutely love Jimmy Smith.

I've had his jersey for four years. I got it during his rookie season. Has it really only been a year? I thought it was two for some reason

I actually used to have another account that got banned for trying to advertise a website I used to own (I do not own it anymore and have not tried anything like that since getting this account, so please do not ban this one, too, mods).

Good question. Probably something like BmoreRavensFan or something like that.

That's the one thing that really comes to mind

We cannot keep winning against good teams when our secondary is so poor, notwithstanding the unremarkable Wilkerson vs. Smith debate being waged by some posters who should spend more time sticking to the subject and less time debating whether we drafted the right person in Jimmy Smith. Right now, Jimmy is our best defender in the secondary and he's not perfect either. Calling Darian Stewart and Matt Elam safeties is either a misnomer or an oxymoron. The TD given up to Benjamin was ridiculous. When a D-lineman is the only defender to record an interception, something is terribly wrong. Asa is a pretty decent hitter but is terrible in coverage. And then there's Chykie Brown. The people asking for Webb's head on a platter in another post should have their heads examined. When he returns to full health, he will become a force. Until then, playing him is a liability and could jeopardize his recovery. There are two or three others in the secondary I'd release before releasing him. Cam Newton's aerial attack today suffered from a lack of quality receivers (incl. Steve Smith Sr.), and he was under a constant state of duress, not to mention his own physical frailties. So, who should walk home from this game? That's easy --- Asa Jackson, Darian Stewart, Matt Elam, Chykie Brown and, oh yes, Jacoby Jones for not catching a ball that practically hit him in the stomach. That's the type of catch a receiver doesn't make due to the fear of being hit. Kudos to Brynden Trawick for making a great unassisted tackle today.
