This article essentially sums up what I think about Daryl Smith's play so far this year. He definitely needs to step up his game. He's been a big part of why we've struggled on the run and in the pass against TE.

This is disturbing. Mainly because it is yet another guy that we signed to a nice contract that is either suspect in his play, is hurt or is gone. Looking at those guys, plus some of the other contracts we have in place, I am fearing a cap avalanche over the next couple of years.

Moriarty is going to have his work cut out for him going forward.

I said it before and i will say it again Arthur Brown needs to be out there not Smith. Smith got his big pay day now he can fade away

He certainly will. It is confusing that Arthur Brown isn't out there with how purely he's playing. I'm not sure what's the reason, if Brown just isn't that good or what. We really should try him at the very least. See if he can do something in the games. At this point with how Smith's playing, I think it would at least be with a shot.

I don't know how much better Brown would be but I certainly believe he would at least provide some rest for Daryl. Maybe rotate the old man in. I don't quite get it. I've been wanting to see someone take a closer look at Daryl because he hasn't been playing well and this is kind of what I saw. This just confirms it.

Ive seen Brown play a lot down here in big 12 country and the guy has a nose for the ball he can diagnose a play quickly and instinctively. I just think it would be great to see two young emerging stars playing next to another especially since they invested an early round pick on him..

I wonder when Harbs will trust Art enough to play with a rookie in CJ (though he doesn't play like one).

that pass play to miles austin is actually one play you and I criticised in the game thread. A lot of people thought it was the safety's fault but we both blasted smith.

There was another one that stood out but i can't remember it.

Until we see more out of Taliferro Pierce is still the best back we have. When he was at his best he was a monster.

Forsett doesn't have the body or power for too many carries and Lorenzo is a rookie.

When was pierce at his best? When was he this monster? How many 100 yard games has he had? Rushing TDs? His potential is to be a monster, his body has the potential to be Glass Joe

Yeah it's good to see that there's evidence behind the claim. Not good in that I want to see it, though. But this is merely a sample of a collection of poor play from Daryl this year after a standout year last season in coverage. He was never the best in run support but this spotty coverage is killing us and I'm hoping we realize that after Harbaugh alluded to it in his presser.

Do Arthur brown & Mosley play the same position (mike / will) and if so, could one switch to allow both of them to play together?

both are suited for will atm but Mosley has shown alot as far as stopping the run if he was bigger he was be a good mike.

Thanks, I thought they played the same position but knowing how the nfl is changing having to ilb'ers that can play the pass would be a good thing

They do play the same position and some would argue that the two ILB positions are different, but, honestly, the responsibilities are largely the same. It wouldn't really make a difference if one of them had to change positions. Some say the positions aren't interchangeable but I disagree.

I would assume Mosley will slide to mike next year once he has a full offseason to just prep for football and bulk up and brown will slide into will spot

I think Mosley could play MIKE right now. His instincts and recognition seem to be superior to Smith at the moment. With how poorly Smith has been playing the run and his rather mediocre coverage so far this year, I think it would be little difference between the two. He seems smart enough to make the calls. I think he's fine. But I doubt we do it now, even though I think he can handle it.

This is where I'd pay good money to see what the coaches are thinking. See what they see that the fans don't, or if they're just sketchy about doing something potentially too radical for a side with a winning record (kind of an extension of being too scared to do something new like that).

I'm trying to figure out why Smith is seemingly playing so poorly. He had such a great year last season, huge in the transition from #52 and earned his contract. Is it more Mosley just looking so phenomenal or is Smith just declining?

One-year deals are great for player motivation. We saw a few of them work out last year and Maclin's looking good on his this year.

I think Smith more or less knows this is his last big payday, so it's natural to slow down a bit. That and his age probably isn't helping.

Very true, thats only natural. Man, if Maclin keeps doing his thing he is going to get a large payday.

Yeah I guess a 32 year old LB in his 11th season may just be slowing down .. Just hope that contract doesn't hurt us in a year when we might have to cut him.

I won't talk football for a minute but suggest a great  way to set you up for it.

Instead of listening to ESPN or another rubber stamp network pre game and that sort of mundane trash, silence the media and play Funky Stuff by Kool and the Gang then segway to Tower of Power "I Got to Groove" 40th anniversary live or 1973 with Lenny Williams as vocalist.

Works for me everytime.  I say everytime. What a bloodrush!  I often thought the Ravens M&T cheer ought to be "Got to Groove". Now thats' classic.

Lets score early often and without hesitation. Do it Joe.

You know what ? We just started the season with 3 divisions games and came out 2-1. Thats all you could ask for.

No vent needed.

I think we've just played against some real quality teams with some quality tight ends. In week one we had Eifert and even Gresham is solid. Week two he struggled against the run which I expected. Week three we had some big fast RBs to stop as well as a big tight end. Daryl's not playing bad, but the other teams are playing well, if you take my meaning.

Maybe D. Smith is nicked, just as Monroe was, without letting it being known publicly. I seriously doubt he is purposely half stepping.

It's not about half-stepping, as these guys are competitive and do what they can do win. But it's human nature to slack off a bit without that extra financial incentive - or at least not play with that same added intensity - and it happens all over the league (hell, it's why contract-year players are always hot property in fantasy).

I never crucified Jimmy Smith. Not once. In fact I stood behind him and defended him while others chastised him. I will say, however, that while I initially liked Elam he's not showing the same potential that Jimmy demonstrated. I've boiled it down to a few reasons. He's either over thinking things, is not being used right, or just isn't smart enough. He either needs better coaching or he'll just never make it. I'm not ready to give up on him but perhaps benching him will help him. I think we might want to consider it as things develop.

Weren't you the one who always said you would have rather had Mo Wilkerson?
