Tank 92

Never mind the bollocks, let's talk about Smith Sr.

80 posts in this topic

He's a number 1 receiver - he's not the elite receiver he was 4-5 years ago, but even diminished he's still a number 1.  When people around here debate what is or isn't a number 1 receiver, you're watching one in Steve Smith at age 35.  He does 3 things which I think define a number 1 receiver: makes all the catches, whether easy or tough, is able to separate himself from the corners covering him, and makes plays after the catch.  We've had guys in Mase and Boldin who could consistently do the first 2, have a guy now in Torrey who can do the third when he has separation, but we've never had a guy who could do all three until Steve.

Absolutely agree! Steve Smith Sr. is a number 1 in every way. Has been throughout his career and nothings changed in his skill-set. We have always had receivers that are hybrid-1/2 or 2/3, but Steve is a true 1 according to everyone whose played the game in that position at a high level (HOFers: Rice, Ervin, Carter, etc.). Who am I to say he's not?

GO Ravens!!!

Funny how he came in and played it off. Saying he's not a number 1 anymore and that he'll be the complementary reciever opposite Torrey. He's exciting to watch after he gets the ball in his hand. Just love it how he fights for extra yards

Steve Smith, Sr. is an absolute beast!  Even at 35.  He's in good shape and knows the game in and out!  That is what separates him from these other receivers on the Ravens roster.

I'm sold. I wasn't sure, if Steve had something left in the tank and whined ALOT during the draft, because Ozzie didn't use any of our high picks on a WR (should've complained about the lack of CB drafted instead -_- ), but that Flacco-to-SmithSr-connection has been strong and clutch. I'm on board! Sorry for doubting you Steve (that first game was ugly, though)!

Great talent, strange cosmetic procedures..........haha

Yeah, Jackson had two outstanding years that helped make the Ravens exciting to watch early on. But in just two games, Smitty is bringing back the fire and intensity to this team that was sorely missed last year and has quickly become another go to guy for Joe. The big question is at 35, how long can he keep it up. It's not unheard of for a WR to play into their late 30s but with his physical style, can Smitty do that?

If Smith can somehow will his 35 year old body to help lead this team to win yet another (improbable) Super Bowl then yes, he will have had the greatest single season at WR in Ravens history.

Until then though, it is Michael Jackson still, with Boldin having the greatest post season in our team's history, and Derek Mason having the finest Ravens career overall (shame he couldn't hang in for 2 more years to get that ring in 2012).

I would too. Smith is an absolute psychotic animal with the ball in his hands, I love it.

He's in great shape for a 35 year old and you never know, could play another three or four years. He does have a young family and that may draw from his desire to keep going. But as I said originally, Smitty could potentially be the most productive receiver we've ever had.

How about just a first or second rounder? I see a lot of similarities with FSU's Rashad Greene, albeit without the same burst or feistiness.

Back on topic though, what I like about him is that he can make plays when called on. That play in Cleveland was just nails, and the kind of thing you can't put a price on. I'd take one of them a week over gaudy stats any day.

Be great if we could get him a ring in the next year or two.

Can't wait to see Smitty shine against Carolina. But I was thinking that there's the chance they do everything they can to keep him out of the mix which will open things up for Torrey, etc.. At the least, I think we'll see some hellacious run blocking from him.  Ice up son!

Rivera was ask "How do you feel about the Steve Smith matchup?..."

He responded, "...this is the Carolina Panthers vs Baltimore Ravens.". Huuummmm? People in Charlotte are calling it the 'Revenge Game' and 'Steve Smith Week'. I lived in Charlotte a few years and still have friends there. They can't stand how the organization has been run over the years (especially how they treated Steve). They are collectively rooting for Steve to torch their own Panthers...and so am I.

Light'em Up! GO Ravens!!!

He's quickly becoming one of my favorite current Ravens, and I just love the impact he's had on the team already. He brings a fire and a passion we've missed since Ray retired.

I completely agree. I am really excited to watch him play this season. I wish he had come to us sooner!

I just appreciate the attitude in which he plays.  It's shall we say...tenacious...?

I wish the other receivers would adopt half his fire.  God know they have the ability - they just need a 'tude.  He's like the Ray Lewis of the offense.

Hopefully after this game, the Panthers will be saying, "I wish we would had kept him longer."

Intangebles.....

something you cant track like a stat....that is what Agent 89 brings to the table.....#52 brought that as well. Intensity.....focus....drive...perfection....motivation....attitude.....it all adds up to Beastmode!!

I certainly hopes it wears off on others wearing purple....this is what our scouts should be prioritizing when it comes to bringing in future draftpicks...I will take a player with heart and desire over stats any day of the week...

Agreed. They're not easy to identify and come-by in this new culture, but when they do...we need to take a serious look at them.

Lets make a player like Steve Smith, but take away the key feature that make him steve smith (Burst and Tenicity). I like Greene but wouldn't go hiller than mid-late second round. he is a lot like Jarvis laundry for last draft: a high floor, low ceiling, but definitely closer to that floor.

Steve Smith Jr. is (simply) GREAT!!! (and always has been)

I think you mean Steve Smith Sr. His son is still pretty young.

Flacco to Smith is the play, that is going to set the tone for the offense this season. I'm loving it. Joe Flacco and a legit go-to-WR. Scary stuff. So how far over 1k receiving yards will Steve get? 1500, maybe? Only got that much once in his carreer (2005).

Maybe we'll be so fortunate to get Steve Smith (and he'll help us) finally get his ring.  Just like we did for the aging greats of Boldin, and Rod Woodson.
