A Quote that the Ravens Organization needs to take to Heart

"You can not expect to have a team of 53 Angels to win."

To me this holds true. I have never heard of a team that win superbowls with a team of goodie 2 shoes. To win championships you need to have some tough guys and not softies. I don't mean hardened criminals, heavens no! I'm talking about tough love kind of players and maybe one time offenders to the law.

Ray Rice made a mistake and he should have been given respect for the fact that he owned up to his mistake. If he didn't have a bad season last year and showed signs of slowing down I would have been protesting on the Streets of Baltimore by now.

If a player's talent is too great of a reward the Ravens should be willing to bypass any character issues.

I would also like to reference the Cowboys passing on Randy Moss because of character issues and they went a good stretch in which they were in an offensive slump.

To me it's win at all costs. If a player has talent that will win the Ravens another Superbowl we should bypass character issues.

If this organizationwas willing to do that earlier we could have had 3 or 4 Championships by now. But it is what it is and a team of goodie 2 shoes will not produce results 75% of the time.

Being arrogant and a DBag is a lot different than being a person who hits a woman....

And having goodie two shoes? Hm. If I recall the greatest LB in NFL history happened to be accused in a MURDER investigation....

We kept him on cause there was no physical proof..

With rice there's a video, and he deserves to be gone.

With the way Goodell and the league has been coming down on players of questionable character who get in trouble, even first time offenders, if you have a bunch of guys like that as starters, then you're going to need a bunch of quality backups to step in and play when those starters are suspended, which will be fairly often. Those Bengals teams of the mid 2000's with Chris Henry (RIP) and Pacman Jones, etc. would now have to sign guys off the street every week just to fill their roster with how many and how long their starters would have been suspended.

I can see both sides of the argument. Some make the argument that "judges judge, and football teams play football." I can see that and even respect it. However, I disagree with it. The NFL has too much power and too much influence to stand by idly without doing something to bring about some much-needed social change.

There needs to be some middle ground. Teams need to do their research before signing players to see if they have glaring red marks against them and then not sign them no matter how talented they are. They need to allow the courts to take action before they do. AND if there is a repeat offender, he needs to be gone period. There are a lot of one time offenders that get the help they need to not become repeats.

Rice was the case that glaringly showed the NFL's arbitrary rules when it comes to suspensions and punishments in general. I have a concern that with the current climate in the press, public and NFL that the teams are going to loose players that would otherwise get the help they need to get and keep their life on track. Some of these guys are deserving of a second chance. (not all but some)

Another old expression that needs to be remembered now is: Do not throw the baby out with the bath water. (I know, I am showing my age with that one)

But we kept Jamal Lewis whom was a drug dealer and he plead guilty to the charges against him but I guess  a video was needed back then too.

The baby doesn't matter anymore. It's now about getting rid of that filthy, nasty bathwater because it offends us so, then patting each other on the back for a job well done while we sigh with contentment because we now feel so much better (about ourselves).
