An analysis of the Raven's first 2 weeks

Five Things we learned from the first 2 weeks of football.

1. Running the ball is how we will win the game - While we by no means played a good steelers team, this week's performance showed us exactly what we need to do to win games. Pierce did an okay job this week, but has to be more effective going forward to maintain consistency on offense. He needs to step up and become the guy because this system is suited for him. The reason we won on Thursday was the difference in game plan. That is all.

2. The offensive line is the strongest it has ever been. When Ozzie made the trade for Eugene Monroe, he envisioned a line that could impose its will on any team, and he has finally done it. Zuttah has come in and played better than expected. Rick Wagner has been effective at RT (not just okay, but actually effective). The rest of our line is healthy and dominant. We could theoretically finish with what could be a top 5 offensive line.

3. The defense is special. We are not even at full strength yet, and this defense is proving it is special. Make no mistakes, the sacks may not be there, but the pass rush is. Through 2 games, we have held opponents to 1 touchdown that came on a very flukey play given up by our 3rd string corner (who has played exceptionally well). The defense isnt even at full strength yet as Webb will return, and Will Hill will come to galvanize the secondary. From front to back, this defense is special and will only get better from here on in.

4. If we want to win games, Flacco needs to play the role of a game manager. This isn't an insult to Flacco, but I never want to see him try to carry the team by throwing the ball 62 times a game for 345 yards and 2 TD's. I'd rather see him post the 191 yards 2 TD's while going 21-29. Why? It shows that he is playing efficient football and to the strengths of the team as a whole.

5. The run game needs to be more effective if we want to establish the deep ball and Torrey.

An excellent assessment! I think more time together, the new  system, and a lot less press for reasons beyond the rest of the teams control will serve us well. An excellent off season is being over shadowed by one incident. The Ravens are a team with a positive upside. I believe!!

1) My problem with Pierce from the last game was that most of his yards came at the end of the game when that Steeler defense had flat out given up. During the first half he didn't do any better than he did against the Bengals, as a result Forsett came in for a while but Pierce was put back in late and he started taking advantage. He and Forsett early on were trying to be too flashy so we didn't have much of a run game the first half, i couldn't tell you how frustrated i was watching him and Forsett take and extra juke or spin in the back field and the hole closed up, they need to be one cut backs in the offense and they'll be effective

2) No complaints there. Our offense has showed up and is playing great.

3)The defense is very good, it will only get better from here. Although i somewhat disagree with the pass rush thing. We got virtually no pressure at all against the Bengals and that Steelers line is not good at all, Doom flat out abused their RT. I was mostly impressed with the run defense though, thats what surprised me, that is a very potent pair of backs they have over in Pitt and our D stopped them for the most part.

4) I'd rather have a good effiecient QB who makes no mistakes than a guy who puts up big numbers but makes a ton of mistakes (cough cough, Romo, cough cough)

5) Teams just aren't letting Torrey and Jacoby get deep on them, they are expecting that, so I say the key is to stick with what we are doing, send Torrey deep a few plays, then the safety plays a little deeper to be ready then gash them over the middle with Brown and Smith Sr.

To win a championship with a game manager QB, you'll need a great defense and OL and we have neither of these. The Steelers are not a playoff team and us winning against them doesn't mean much. I'd be surprised (positively), if we manage to run against actually good defenses as effectively as we did against the Steelers. For now, I haven't seen us do that against the Bengals.

I doubt the offense will be as conservative throwing the ball as it was against Pittsburgh.  I'm basing that off of what Shaub and the running game did during Kubiak's tenure in Houston.  In Shaub's 3 16 game seasons he threw the ball around 560 times a season or about 35 times a game.  They ran the ball somewhere between 25-30 times a game in those seasons.  That's where I expect the end of the season numbers to average out to for us this year.

What? Our defense is very very good, even though we aren't at full strength we've only allowed 1 TD against two good offensive teams, and that 1 TD was on a lucky tip. I don't know what you've been watching but our Oline has also been fantastic, Wagner had first start jitters against the Bengals but even during that game he played great. That Steelers team may not be championship caliber but it is pretty darn good, especially on offense they are dangerous, they have 2 great backs in Bell and Blount, a pretty good receiver by the name of Brown and Big Ben goes without saying is a good QB. Our D largely locked them all down.

Flacco doesn't need to be a game manager, he just needs to take what he is given.  There is a huge difference.  If the defense gives us a 5 yard pass on second down then take it.  I feel Flacco is trying to force the big play too often.  He didn't try it against the Steelers and it worked very well.

Efficiency will get us wins.

Five Things we learned from the first 2 weeks of football.

I disagree with everything you said, expect for the part about the oline. But when I say I disagree, it's not in a negative way.

1. I understand why you are saying what you are saying, but lets be honest. We only played two games with a new OC installing a new offense who's getting familiar and comfortable with new weapons. It's tough to make an accurate assessment of "What this offense needs to do to win". That's the biggest thing that bothered me listening to the media this past week. We are this type team or that type team. Kubes himself has said this isn't the same offense he ran in Houston, he has much different talent here and a much better QB to run it. Ideally being able to get a nice size lead and proceed to run the ball close to 40 times will win you a lot of games, but it rarely happens in the NFL. With over 8 minutes left in the game, the Ravens never had to throw another pass, that's not gonna happen often. Also between the Ravens and the Steelers I think there was only 2 possessions between the two teams. That's means both offenses held the ball a long time, that's not gonna happen often. You're not gonna be able to condense games like that on a regular bases. We'll need much more opportunities to see this offense because we can determine "what we need to do" to win games consistently. imo

2.  Again I agree 100% here.

3. The defense is nowhere near special imo. Really good right now, but I don't see special honestly. Bend but don't break only takes you so far imo. Not having Eiffer and Jones last week helped when you are talking about defending the redzone and the Steelers offense just had nothing outside of Brown and Bell. Now don't get me wrong the defense did what they needed to do, but from what I've seen thus far, despite being young and fast they struggle with speed and misdirection. The potential for growth is there, but I wouldn't say special right now. But I do like the way we are headed.

4. No QB should ever have to attempt 60+ passes and even Joe said this during the NFL Network interview. The only reason he passed 60+ times is because the offense didn't take advantage of early opportunity to stay on the field and/or score. Going back to watch that game, there were 8 plays where drops and/or Joe and WR/TEs weren't on the same page that resulted in missed opportunity of at least 174 passing yards and 1 or 2 TD and at least another FG. Of course we can't play the if game, but factor in Joe's boneheaded play and Tucker's uncharacteristic miss, that's at least 16 first half points, maybe even 20. If that's the case you are looking at a game where you are probably more balanced in the 2nd half instead of 30+ pass attempts. There was nothing wrong with the offensive game plan in week 1, it was just execution. It's tougher for a new passing game to click early, especially against an aggressive defense like the Bengals. I mean just look at what they are doing in the first half against the Falcons, look at what the aggressive Browns defense is doing against the Saints right now. Right now we are honestly just seeing basic offense of Kubes, the combo routes, double moves and misdirection off of play action hasn't even been introduced into the offense yet. So you will definitely see a lot more of what you saw in the Bengals game, they just have to execute it better.

5. The run game doesn't have to be any more effective then it is now, Kubes just hasn't implemented the deep ball into the offense yet. Unlike Cam and Caldwell, Kubes isn't just gonna chuck the ball down field 4-5 times a game. He's gonna set it up, but these past games there wasn't much opportunity for it. The one time Torrey did have the opportunity for deep play off the Playaction in the Steelers game, he lost his shoe at the snap and really wasn't able to get on top his defender. Again, it's way too early imo to determine what this offense needs to do long term to be successful because this offense is so multiple.

I'd love to get your opinion on this matter in about 4-5 weeks from now.

we need to try Taliaferro a bit more,I do not think that pierce is the man, just my opinion, As far as the offense well in the second half with cincy,we played good we will be tested come Sunday against the browns (good defense) in time we will get better ,JOE can not be a game mgr,he is good he needs to be allot more consistent ,

I agree!  I was at both games this past week and I said the same thing, especially on Thursday night!  Pierce is not the answer imo!  Of course, he got it going later in the game vs the steelers but that was "after" their defense was worn down a bit. I'd like to see him get it clicking earlier on.  From what I've seen of him in the preseason, Taliaferro runs with some ferociousness to him.  He's very aggressive!  That how I want my back to run all the time!

Why do you feel this way?

See above statement.  Lol!

Dalton has one of the fastest releases in the league, so it's hard to get real pressure against him, but I'd expect us to do a better job of that next time we play them. Chykie Brown has done okay, but "exceptionally well"? That's a bit of a stretch. He has covered better than expected, but that doesn't excuse him from not being able to get to a runner and/or tackle a guy every once in a while. This is where Webb will make the biggest difference, I hope.

One observation that you left out is how great and reliable our TEs' hands are. That will be huge for drive-extending plays this whole year, if they both stay on the field.

Why do you feel this way?

My biggest gripe with Pierce is that he doesn't run with authority, never gets that full head of steam. He seems to still be cautious and it looks like he's over-thinking things to me out there at times. I also personally like my RB to have a bit of an explosion, and he seems to just lack that. I think he could just be trying to get his legs under him, so I'll wait until mid-season. I think he just needs some confidence and I think he is starting to get that confidence. I hope, anyway.

Isn't that were most backs start to pick up the big yardage in games?

Also I don't know what your definition of "getting going" is but the guy had 7 touches (6 rushes 1 catch) for 23 yards during the first drive. The offense only ran 12 plays for a total of 43 yards. So BP basically keep the offense on track the first drive. Also it's hard to really "get going" when you only have 8 rushes in the first half. I'm not really sure where you're going with that one.

I can understand that, but we also have to understand that this offense as a whole is getting comfortable with the system and building more confidence as they are able to run more plays. Despite the early success, the offense is still just basic. Honestly to me the only guys who look to be playing 100% are the guys who've been in the offense before(O.D and Forsett). Everyone seems to be feeling their way and that's a pretty good thing considering how well things have gone thus far.

We have to remember that this offense is only about 4 1/2 months old for the Ravens and they've only really been able to test it out at full speed in 2 games. I don't think anyone in the offense can be expected to be operating at full throttle.

Yeah you make good points and I honestly agree with them. I don't disagree at all. I was alluding to that with my comments, but you pretty much summarized what I feel towards Pierce. I will say, however, that I've never seen Pierce truly be explosive but I do recall him running more decisive. Hopefully it's just hook trying to adjust to the scheme. It's still too early to call imo

He's never been an explosive guy, he's more of a glider as a runner then a guy that explodes through the line. He's more slash then physical as a runner. I just get the feeling that many want him to be a complete back and you rarely find that in the NFL anymore. What he lacks in that explosiveness, Forsett picks up. Forsett probably isn't a guy who you will consistently give 20+ carries to, but he's really good in his role. BP is the type of guy you can give that 20 touches to and he'll consistently give you 4+ ypc in this offense imo. People said he struggled in game one, imo he didn't. He had 5 carries for 21 yards before getting blown up for a 4 yard loss. The fumble was bad, but others in the offense messed up just as much imo.

I think this guy is gonna have a huge season once the offense gets rolling. If he can stay healthy, which is my only concern with him.

Yeah, his health is a major concern. I think how he holds up will determine how high we will draft a RB next year, and if we sign one as a FA. I have high hopes for Taliaferro. And it's true that he was never explosive but he used to run more decisive. But I think you're right on the money when you say it could be because of the new system. Time will tell. We should know by week 8.

Of course backs do their best running when the defense is worn down and late in games that is why I mentioned that.  Also, I think that you are thinking too technically on my "get going" statement.  Don't cause I'm not man!  I know what Pierce done on that first drive.  He had runs of 2, 5 and 2 yards.  Then on a 3rd &1 he got little and it was 4th&inches and a QB sneak by Joe.  Then Pierce ran for another 2 yards and there was a catch on that drive as you mentioned.  Umm, all those runs of 2 yards and barely getting a yard is not "getting it going" to me.  But hey!  That's my perspective and where I'm going with that one.

I don't believe the indecisiveness is because of the "new" system.

1. We've been running the zone stretch for a while, and the "reads" stay the same throughout all zone-based schemes.

2. As mentioned above, the reads stay the same, and they're quite simple. Basically, the read man for stretch is the DE or the 3-4 OLB. If he gets pinned inside, you bounce it outside. If you can't seal him, you cut it up the middle and read the next linemen in. For inside zone, you read the first DT on the play side. Bounce it if he's pinned, cut it if he's not. It's easier said than done, but I'm not buying the "new scheme" excuse.

Why do you feel this way?

Pierce is not a strong runner almost like he is not sure or scared, something is missing and he also stays hurt,I liked him as a backup,,the offense is still a work in progress, they saw some action in preseason but not really, wait till about the 4/5 game maybe allot of kinks will get worked out but it really takes the second year for the new system to become fluid.the browns are a decent team with a good defense,we can not under estimate them pack a lunch,Joe is good his problem is 1 consistency and 2 when he is bad he is really bad,we have to find him a medium,I hope I answered it ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

yea I agree, that's exactly why I think this season is huge for BP and his future. He definitely fits this system and can make a career here, but he has to stay healthy. I think he felt the pressure of having the biggest opportunity of his career in the Bengals games. I just noticed a run or 2 where he seemed to want the huge run when he could have had much more just running through a tackle like he usually does. But there has also been plays where he's almost broke free for a huge gain over the first two games.

Yea I think week 8 is a good measuring point. They'll play a wide range of defenses over that period and we should know how BP responds to games where maybe things aren't going as well for the running game as it has the first 2 weeks. He should be more passes his way to see how much or little he'll contribute to the passing game.

As for LT, I think as the season gets closer to November and December we'll start to see him get more opportunities. I don't think most fans truly appreciate just how many options we now have on offense. It's hard to get all those guys into a game plan each week. I think as we have success and teams start to game plan against what we're having success at, we'll see guys like Juice, LT, Brown, Aikens, and others getting opportunities to help as well.

If I hear one more person say Flacco threw the ball 60 times because he was trying to carry us I swear I'm gonna pop a blood vessel. He wasn't trying to carrying us.We were down by two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter and by one touchdown with 4:50 to go in the 4th.According to the play by play, twelve of his 62 attempts came on that last drive after that Green td.

I wrote that poorly.  It's something he used to do in the past.  Mainly last season when our offense couldn't do anything.  Running game was crap, receivers couldn't get open.  People talk about how it was his worst season with all the INT but it more seemed he was just frustrated by the lack of production.

No sign of that this year.

It's the Tale of 2 Seasons...so far.

Season One -

The 1st 6 quarters (Unispired against Bengals in 2013 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarter)

and (Undefined against Bengals this year 1st-2nd quarter).

Season Two -

The last 6 quarters. Since then...the glimpse of the 'real' 2014 Ravens finally appeared.

(Starting to believe against Bengals this year 3rd-4th quarter) and (Be-reborn as 'true' Ravens vs Steelers)

This is the hardest I've seen our Ravens consistently hit, dominate on the O-Line, show purple fire and trust in each other in 3 years. The last 6 quarters...they've defined themselves. Let's hope they 'nevermore' lose themselves again. This team could be really special in their own right. GO Ravens!!!

If you can't seal him, you cut it up the middle and read the next linemen in. For inside zone, you read the first DT on the play side. Bounce it if he's pinned, cut it if he's not. It's easier said than done, but I'm not buying the "new scheme" excuse.

I wouldn't go that far. First offl, as you mentioned it's much easier said then done. The first thing you have to understand is that everything isn't the "stretch zone". So this in itself makes the reads different. Secondly you must have trust and confidence that you know exactly what your oline is doing and how they'll block. If none of this was an issue, I doubt Kubes would have spent so much time teaching "his" system in OTAs. There probably wouldn't have been much need to have Dennison work closely with Castillo to "teach" the system. They would have just said, all zone blocking is the same, we ran it last year so we're good. The players themselves have said it's both different and simpler/less complex then last year.

Not sure why BP is getting such flak for indecisiveness when the entire offense is indecisive right now. There has been plenty of plays missed because either the WRs didn't read the coverage right or Joe missed something. There has been times where the oline wasn't on the same page, not really sure what BP has really done wrong honestly.
