200th Anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore(and the Star Spangled Banner)

3 posts in this topic

This weekend marks the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore and tomorrow night, the stand at Fort McHenry. It was a huge battle in American history that restored hope to a young nation after the sacking of Washington D.C. by the British. Without that stand by the people of Baltimore, we could all be British for all we know. It was a turning point in the War of 1812 and the stand at Fort McHenry inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that would later become our national anthem; The Star Spangled Banner. It was a really big moment in American history that should never be forgotten.

An event like this has plenty of things going on over these next 2 days. There are ships from all over the world in the harbor, the blue angels, concerts, and a fireworks display all going on this weekend and more. Here is the site where you can find info on the festivities.

Got a link to WBAL yesterday and watched. Goose bumps. Along time, a long time ago I went on afield trip from Govan's Elementary  P.S.213 to Fort McHenry. Even at that young age it was awesome. We toured the dungeons, walked the walls, took in the whole experience. Everyone who gets the chance to should go there. The war of 1812 seems to get lost in history but the "Battle of Baltimore" says a lot about everyone that defied the odds, and struck a mighty blow for freedom in the harbor that long night. I swear you can feel it. Went back in 1997, still felt it. One thing I always explain to anyone watching a sporting event with me. Why Baltimoreans always yell "O" when that beautiful song is played! History and courage of the "underdogs" earned us that right! God bless America, and God bless Baltimore! My home no matter where this life takes me!
