John Harbaugh and the Ravens' Resolve

12 posts in this topic

If there is one trait the Ravens have consistently shown during the John Harbaugh era, it is resolve. Going all the way back to when our top two quarterbacks went down in his first year, forcing us to start our rookie third stringer. No one would've blamed us for stalling on offense and not making any noise that year. Instead we decided transform our rushing attack into an innovative three-headed monster and made the AFC Championship game. Our resolve showed when we destroyed the Steelers to open up the 2010 season after being knocked out the playoffs the previous year by the same team. It showed again in 2012, when we responded after Torrey's tragedy and the loss, subsequent return, and then retirement announcement of Ray Lewis--putting together one of the most improbable Super Bowl runs in history. And our resolved show once more last night...after one of the toughest, most emotional weeks the young franchise has ever experienced.

There's a lot of talk about what John Harbaugh does and doesn't do as a head coach. Things like, "He doesn't command offense or defense," "He's overzealous with his doghouse and hurts the team as a result," "He's an egomaniac that can't handle being challenged by his players..." The list goes on.

One thing that cannot be denied is that he has instilled a mental toughness in this team that we just didn't have in the Billick era (see: Countless instances of losing our cool and imploding, culminating in the infamous '07 Patriots game).

I just wanted to start this thread give Harbs props for the culture he's created for this team. A culture of accountability, brotherhood, and resolve. Who's got it better than us?

When Deion asked Joe yesterday "Who are the Baltimore Ravens?"  the first thing that came to my mind was resolve.  These guys don't give up!  I remember last year when we beat the lions, I went to 49erswebzone forums.  One of posters said something a long the lines of "They're like a bug that refuses to die".  Today, when I think of our motto "Play Like a Raven",  physical play doesn't always comes to mind.   What comes to mind for today's team is "Never....ever...EVER.. give Up"

John Harbaugh is a different maker; a true leader for this team.

We are playing like a team of champion and the signature speech of John was the team, the team, and the team......

I can't wait to take revenge from the last year loss to the losing Browns......

I missed our passion. It seems like we have it back. It's sorely missed.

Chalking that up to a simpler scheme on offense and finding more intense players on defense.

Kubiak's scheme lets the players play instead of think. That allows for more energy and intensity.

Guys like Elam and Mosley have a true passion for the game that rubs off on others.

Finding guys that are more intense on offense too. Smith Sr. and Daniels were ideal Ravens FA additions. God bless Ozzie Newsome.

I absolutely loved watching Daniels and Smith, Sr. getting hyped after a catch!  I loved it! I really like aggressive players like that!!

That game was probably the best game I have seen from this team since at least Houston, maybe our best game since the playoff run. If we can keep it up and stay focused, we could be ready to make some serious noise.

No doubt but it's great to see. I really missed our passion and intensity. Last year it's like we lost all of that. I hated it really. You need that energy and it was sorely lacking. It's great to have it back. It's that kind of energy that helps you win close football games.

As most of you know, I have not been one of John Harbaugh's greatest advocates. That being said, his decision to bench Pierce for the rest of the Cincy game was great coaching. It gave Pierce some time to reflect on his key fumble and probably strengthened Pierce's resolve. As for the Ravens' identity, I also see the resolve but more than that I see a much more physical team than the one we had last year on both sides of the line of scrimmage. We had lost the ability to impose our will on the opposition. It is returning. The defense has allowed only one TD in two games and the offense is playing with an attitude starting with Steve Smith and Joe Flacco.
