Torrey Smith

I know you saw me type "right now"

Right... But to compare those two AT ALL, is a major oversight... Even with Torrey not playing well.

We cut Tommie Streeter for being a lot of what Torrey is giving us right now. I want him to be the man. I really do

I am not sure why we cut Streeter, but if I have to imagine, it's because Tommy was lazy on the field and was giving lazy effort (oxymoron!). Torrey at least isn't giving lazy effort--he's just not very effective and seems frustrated by something. I think he's thinking too much. Perhaps the coach change messed with him a bit. He took some time to get going with Hostler. I'd give him some time before we start throwing this kind of stuff around.

to you and H8R, i'm not tryna say they are in the same league, ya both know i'm not that irrational fan. I like everyone here just want Torrey to play better

This system does require a lot more thinking by receivers. From what I understand, this offense makes use of "option" routes which require receivers to be able to change routes depending on the coverage. Usually it means stopping a route earlier, maybe breaking in instead of out, or going deep  instead of stopping. It also requires WRs and QBs to read the same thing and make the same call. So, say Torrey is on a curl/fade option. Flacco reads the curl but Torrey runs the fade. Easily undercut for an interception, and we had something similar happen against the Browns. Flacco launched one deep and I had no idea where to. Then I saw Torrey just off camera, and it looked like he'd run a post. That's an example of when Joe saw the nine route but Torrey saw the post.

So, this offense puts Torrey at a disadvantage for a few reasons. He's never had chemistry with Joe and now that's become even worse. He's being forced to read coverages when that's never been something he could do. And both of these things are making him think too much.

That makes a lot of sense and I would agree with it. I think Torrey has some chemistry with Joe but it is not the same as it is with others. I have noticed that Flacco seems to throw to receivers who understand routes more than receivers who are just athletically talented. He wants the trust more than he wants the explosiveness, but I don't think he's too particular. He still feeds them the ball and he clearly does trust Torrey because he has thrown him some critical passes during their time.

I think Torrey just isn't incredibly smart, just very athletic, and he relies on that athleticism to make plays. I guess that's why he has never really developed his route tree, because I'm not sure he has that football IQ. The only explanation for it is that he's either just not smart enough in football, lazy, or has poor coaches.

I think it's too early to give up on him, like some have, and I'm not sure he is or ever will be a #1. I do think he still has upside. I'm hoping he turns it around by week 8. That's kind of when I expect him to start turning it on.

I'd like to believe Torrey is just pushing himself too hard. That said, I cannot and will not disagree with a lot of the posts I have read. You would think having Smith Sr. here would open things up for him but... I just don't know, but he needs to get his butt in gear now! Without Pitta, well, besides that we ain't gonna give you that "big Pay day" if you don't give us that big play! Next man up? Come on "T" we need you!!

Yeah same thing happens to Jacoby; both tried too hard and forgot to relax and let their abilities and talents showing them the way. It is called they were playing tight.....

Saw a lot of chatter of various threads about Torrey and his lack of touches thus far this season and I thought that I'd start a thread to discuss why Torrey has been so lackluster and if it's temporary or a trend.

For starters, to me after the 1000 yard season he had last year, people are probably targeting him more than anyone else on the offense as the person to take away, so I'm sure he's seen his fair amount of bracket coverage and other schemes to take him away.

That being said, he hasn't done himself any favors in live game action. He rarely tracks the ball in the intermediate level well, he doesn't come back for the ball very well either. He seems to not be on the same page as Joe often about where the route should be run to and when/where to come out of his breaks based no the certain coverages. He also hasn't caught all the balls that he's got his hands on, and his route running when I am able to see it often seems lackadaisical.

I've always sung Torrey's praises since he proved me wrong about drafting him in 2011...that was because he continually showed signs of improvement. Now i'm calling him out a little bit - he needs to sharpen up. The tables have turned on the resigning of 2011 drafties - now Jimmy is the clear-cut candidate to be rewarded with a long term contract. Torrey's done good things for us overall but he needs to start showing up in next week's game.

that 1000 yard season was a Mirage how many times was he targeted last season and only caught 65 passes ???? He is not a top wr

I think Torrey will have a good game this weekend. I actually really really like this match-up for Torrey Smith. I think Steve Smith Sr will draw double coverage by Carolina and result in Torrey being targeted more.

here's to a good showing this weekend. Playing next to all of these great vets could be the best thing to happen to Torrey in his NFL career. (Mason, Boldin, Smith Senior)
