Talk about the Steelers game

265 posts in this topic

We looked better on offense, but it still needs alot of work to be honest. The offense looked too conservative and we only got 166 passing yards, a 5,75 AVG (which is a good 2 YRDS below Joe's usual AVG) and numerous trips to the Steelers endzone, that resulted in FG out of it. I understand, that the Ravens are still finding it's character on offense, but we need to throw it a bit deeper atleast once in a while, just to keep defenses on their heels (not every team will struggle with stopping the run the way the Steelers do).

Still, I liked what I have seen. A good first step in the right direction.

Lol

Love that guy...but I dont think I'd shed a tear if he wasn't here...been all down hill after the injury.

Suggs didn't have a bad game, no sacks, but he was pushing the pocket back, had 3 tackles and just missed a sack early when Upshaw deilled ben after he got away

Yards don't matter one bit. The offense scored on all but 2 possessions, not bad. He completed 75% of his passes and had a 113 QB rating...I'd say that Joe had a very good game.

I think that the bigger issue is that we couldn't run the ball down at the goal line, play calling could have been the culprit there, so we'll see how that works it's self out.

I still want to see more production from Torrey Smith & Marlon Brown.

Also gotta score TDs in the redzone after good long drives. 3 times we settle for FG inside the 7 yd line.

It's nice to see a thread that doesn't have "Vent" in the title lol.

I missed the first half of the game. I saw Jeromy Miles playing. What position was that? I know afterwards Asa got injured and Elam was put in the Nickel and Miles was put in SS, but what was before that?

Go figure. I get a Marlon Brown jersey and he doesn't even catch a pass. LOL.

I know we are really thin at the CB position, but man I love this defense so much more when we can play man coverage. Especially for Jimmy Smith. I want him on every team's #1. But I know Pees is more of a zone type guy, but man, I think Jimmy would be so good if he was treated like CMac.

We had 3 Redzone trips that lead to 9 pts. This game should of been a bigger blowout. But hey we won by 20 pts no sour grapes for that. Offense and D looked good, D just needs to work on tackling and defending the screen plays.

Now THAT was just what the doctor ordered. :D

I'll try to keep this to a few points:

1) As predicted, the drops sorted themselves out. I think last week was the worst we'll see this year on the dropsies. This offence looks good to drive the ball for five minutes at a time. Loving it.

2) Pierce looked a lot better, and it looks like he's improving in the Kubiak scheme. Did a better job of picking his holes and seemed more decisive than last week. Still got a way to go, but he should be in some good form by season's end.

3) Red zone was an issue. I'm not too sure why you'd run Forsett on a second and goal at the 1, but I guess there's a reason I'm not an OC? I think Kubiak will have that unit improved during the next few weeks though. And as others have said, I'd love to see LT come in for those short yardage plays.

4) Still no Juice is disappointing. :(

5) CJ Mosley had another cracker today. Gotta love his instincts and speed. Got caught out of position a couple of times that I saw, but even without that fumble recovery he had a blinder. Looks like Ozzie's found himself a quality new-age LB who can play all three downs.

6) The front seven as a whole looked a lot better. We have some really nice young DL talent that promises to be brutal when they all gel together. Pernell McPhee had another really nice game - I wonder if we'll hang onto him given our pretty minimal FA class. Timmy Jernigan was a quiet performer too. Fitting in nicely.

7) Jimmy Smith = the most underrated CB in the league. Calling it now. Not a huge play guy, but anyone who can keep an opponent's top weapon quiet is a huge asset in my book.

8) Matt Elam possibly had his best game in a purple jersey. Should be a huge part of blowing up opposing screens going forward.

Also, let's not forget how huge it is that we have our short week out of the way. A long week should be huge against the Browns (no surprises hopefully!) and a 2-1 start isn't out of the question.

Overall, a good win that goes a long way to soothing our rough week and things can only get better from here. I needed that win on a personal note too, so I'm chuffed.

...except red zone offense. other than that it was an awesome game. Nice improvement by the offense overall. Kubiak's adjustments from the 2nd half of last game carried over to this week. We actually played all 4 quarters on both sides of the ball.

Hopefully we will be using big Tali on the goal line next time instead of forsett.

The yards total is a reslut of settling for short passes only, that's the issue. People complain, that Torrey was a "no show" and to a certain degree, that's true, but he, our best deep threat, wasn't a big part of our gameplan anyway. Explosive plays are a strength of Flacco's and the short passing and running was supposed to set it up, not replace it.

Conservative playcalling got Kubiak to the playoffs, but never deep into the playoffs. We had only one deep pass and my problem is, that this isn't enough.

Again, I understand, that we're working out the kinks, but the deep ball should at the top of our to-do-list this week. I can live with Joe's comp. percentage not being 70% as long as the offense is explosive and keep defenses on their heels. Not to mention, that attacking the end zone earlier could lead to more TDs.

The red-zone offense needs to improve also.

Very pleased with the game.  However, as many stated already the redzone offense wasn't spectacular.  I would like to see Marlon Brown used more on redzone tries.  Joe finally has adequate weapons everywhere, lets use them all.

These two games are a learning experience, really. We found Forsett against the Bungles, found our running game against the Stoolers and any concerns people had about Joe as a short or intermediate passer should be gone by now.

Now we need to find the deep ball back and the defense needs to learn how to deal with end arounds and screen passes, which quite frankly are still WAY too effective and killed us, especially in the opener.

Still alot of work to be done here and the Browns, Panthers and Colts have pretty good to excellent defenses, that our new-look offense can cut their teeth on.

If we keep this up, we'll be fine before the Buccs game, imho. (hopefully)

Agreed. I think the defence will sort itself out when it comes to facing short plays like screens, but the lack of a deep pass could end up being one of those things I get frustrated by this year. We've got to keep defences honest and we have three quality deep threats this year - gotta use them to blow the top off the secondaries we face.

Our TEs have excellent hands. I love it. Smith, Sr is on a mission this year, and he is over his opening game yips. Backs look okay, except near the goaline. Having a line is, well, (chokes up)... I'm sorry I can't even... It's just so great. Flacco was efficient, if not flashy.

Three turnovers forced! Sack(s)! (I'm still pissed Upshaw got robbed of a brilliant sack early. If they didn't want Ben to get hit, they should have blown the whistle while the other guys were holding him. It's like they waited for a chance to throw a flag, but I digress. This is a happy post.) No TDs allowed! Good stuff.

Nice return by Jacoby. Tucker is Tucker. I'm happy all around.

This was a complete team win. It hasd everything you could ask for.

1. 0 turnovers by us

2. 3 turnovers on d

3. balanced offense

4. only 4 penalties

5. good overall run d

6. qb making accurate throws

7. few if any drops by wrs

8. Super solid run blocking

I'll nit pick a little bit because you can always get better.

1. we need to get a handle on wr screens. Bengals and steelers got a few on us.

2. Back side contain on misdirection plays needs to be there. 2 more wr end arounds for good yardage on us again tonight

3. Emphasis on DL getting hands up on short throws. Steelers hit us with alot of short crap just like Cincy did. Need to adjust to this and deflect more balls.

4. Need to incorporate other receivers like Torrey, Marlon, and Juice into the pass game

For the receivers was all daniels, and Steve smith last night.

I honestly couldn't tell if Torrey was injured or just dissapeared the whole game. He was nowhere to help the team.

There were few opportunity missed from flacco to get 3td and some wide open players to really shred the steelers, but he really couldn't do better. It was a great performance by flacco. Dumervil surprised me with a very domimamt game. You can tell the difference between steelers lineman and bengals however. I also thought our secondary(especially Elam 2weeks in a roll)did was great job

Everything that was needed to happen happened. Great game.

Torrey and Jacoby were getting mugged..... they were covered.  every time you saw Torrey he had tight coverage...  Jacoby was open in that one TD pass that was missed.... but he actually was the 2nd read...  The first read was the TE....

I think Matt Elam is just going to get better and better....  BUT..  We seriously need to learn how to wrap up a tackle.  That was embarrassing last night..  The Steelers looked like bumble bees and we looked like we were afraid to get stung...  They were bouncing off our guys.

tight coverage doesn't equal getting mugged. They were no more mugged than the Steelers wide receivers

My first Ravens - Steelers game at M&T - and it was awesome!  Played well all night on both sides of the ball.  Is it just me, or does Big Ben look like he is slowing down quite a bit?  He looked lost all night and threw some bad balls.  Only thing I want to see is more TD's when we get in close.....not being able to get 2 yards multiple times was not good.  But without the false start Flacco would have had the QB Sneak TD.....

Loved the run game and the way we wore them down...by the end of the game we running over the right side at will.  And the shorter crisp routes play well for Joe and getting the ball out fast.

Bring on the Browns!!!

Just an interesting note to throw out there, but the Ravens receivers were targeted eight times... allowing five receptions. The oft chastised Chykie Brown allowed one reception. I know several of you hate him, but he was targeted once. Definitely needs to improve in zone coverage, but his man coverage was good. Jimmy Smith allowed two receptions for six yards. Love it.

Daryl Smith and CJ Mosley were the two I expected to give a huge boost to pass coverage, but so far, they need to step their game up there. I give a pass to Mosley because he's still learning, but Daryl, after how great he was last year, is really dropping off hard.

Ain't nuthin' sweeter than smokin' the squealers.  Hopefully more of the same in pburgh and we owe the bungles one in cinci. With performances like last night we can once again top the AFCN.
