The Missing Pass-Rush

Webb says hi. Ugh!

he's different, he's been injured. Ngata has just fell of a cliff. I denied it for so long because he's one of my favourites

After thinking on this more, I think the DL/OLBs played a decent game. I think that losing the way we did just pissed me off last night, and I wanted to blame the easy group. Suggs and Dumervil were getting off the ball like lightning and they DID get close. Suggs beasted against the run. The Cincy game plan called for the ball to come out fast. You can't deny that they gameplanned for a fast passing game to neutralize the pass rush. And when the offense does that, you need help from the secondary to force coverage sacks.

Think about it. Did Dalton have a lot of five or sevem step drops? No, they killed us on screens and timing routes.

Moreover, our offense's inability to score points allowed that to happen. If our offense gets points on the board, Cincy can't just dink and dunk down the field. They can't just own the clock like they did. They'll have to go deep. When they start testing the intermediate and deep routes, the sacks come. When coverage happens, sacks come. Three seconds aren't enough to get to Dalton with that oline.

Good point.  Most of their plays came off quick passing not allowing our guys to get there.  Even during the game I remember many crying about how we were playing the screen.  You can't have it both ways.  You pressure and they screen the guys in back are left to make the play.  What I don't like is how we keep our guys in a lot of off coverage and team seem to kill us with wr screen.  Should be interesting to see how we've adjusted cause the Steelers love those types of plays.

I was like it's 3rd down stop blitzing on the edge they are just going to throw a screen. One positive though is our defense is alot faster than last years. Those screens would've gone for a touchdown or two last year. We held them in check for the most part but we should've prepared better for them. I still don't know why at the end of the game Jimmy was not shadowing AJ Green.

I don't believe the Ravens have CBs that change sides or follow WRs. That's actually pretty rare. Even Richard Sherman stays on his side.

Jimmy was following Calvin last year, but for the most part it seems they keep their guys in place.

Yeah he was true, overall though they stick to the same side. Its difficult to follow the WR and teams tend to trust their players and scheme to defend big name players on offense.

Lets face it Canty and Ngata are getting us nowhere on QB pressure.  I know we are officilly "challenged" by lack of D-Line depth, but I think seeing tyson and Jernigan more would help.  Lets give them some primary reps.

we gave ngata a contract that would indicate 8-12 sacks per year! i dont think hes had 12 since his contract in 3 seasons!

i know but there were a few times during the game that Jimmy Smith was lined up on the left side and Chykie brown on the right. So I'm like if we can do that we should be able to for one series at the end of the game put Jimmy on AJ Green

In that situation, yeah, Smith should have been on Green. However, if you aren't going to have Smith on Green, at least give Brown help. There should never, ever be a time when you let a backup corner try to cover AJ Green all on his own. Nothing good will ever come from that.

Yeah, you figure even if Jimmy is out of position covering Green in the slot he in theory should do better than any other CB on the team. My logic at least.

With all the screens, read option and 3 steppers Cincy ran I'm not as concerned as many with the pass rush. Why is Dalton running read option on the goal line?

Our passrush is way better when Brandon Williams is in, I just don't understand why they keep pulling him out.

Hate to be that guy but it was the Steelers o line. The week before we faced a team trying to get the ball out quickly so I don't fault them for that. I still trust our pass rush, but don't want to get over excited. They looked hungry last night though.

He's a big guy lol.  Trying to keep him fresh is key.  If we leave him in he won't play as well and will be gassed.  That's why you use a rotation and why those injuries early in the season hurt us.

We still need a pass rusher and we need to draft one high. It's far from set. Next year though. Suggs constantly commands double teams and it's really helping Elvis

Opposing teams are scheming the hell out of Suggs it's almost comical. And he's STILL grading at a DPOY level right now. The guy is amazing.

I think Pees is still tinkering with pass rush formations but once we really get rolling this line should be what we thought it was going to be last year.

The Steelers' offensive line isn't the one that we used to face three years ago. Decastro is an animal, Beachum is surprisingly really good, Pouncey is decent, and Foster could definitely be worse at left guard. The only real weak link is Gilbert at right tackle. They're not this All-Star offensive line, but they're definitely a lot better than we're accustomed to.

Steelers kept trying to spread us and it was either take out Ngata or Williams. Thats an easy decision.

Who gave up those sacks we got?  My point is, everyone knows their line isn't the best and Ben has a tendency to hold onto the ball sometimes.  Just want to see if they can get pressure consistently.

I think two of the 3 went to Wagner. He got beat on one and the other Flacco stepped up into the other. the third was that blitz where it was the free man that got Flacco. I believe that's how they scored it 2 on Wagner. The third was the free blitzer.

jimmy shadows pretty often actually, its just not for the whole game, he can play anywhere on the field, but if the scheme calls for jimmy to stay on one side and throw heavy coverage to the other side, then pees wont hesitate to keep him in place.

at this point in their careers.. im not so sure it is an easy decision, ngata has once again been slightly above average and brandon williams has been probably our best DL, he anchors the hell out of that interior.

Not to mention Munchak's a good OL coach.

Gilbert, the player I pointed out as a weak link. Their line most certainly isn't the best because there can only be one best, but they're definitely top 15 in pass blocking, °as opposed to the past when they were bottom five. The Bengals have one of the most talented lines and the Steelers have a good one. The Browns have a very talented offensive line. Don't expect any like eight sack games or anything huge anytime soon.

And just so you know, the Ravens are getting into the backfield, but teams are putting just emphasis on getting the ball out fast and that won't change in Cleveland

Given Suggs extension and Dumervil's current contract, they are going to be on this team for the foreseeable future. We are definitely needing them to step up and play like true leaders on this defense.

I forgot Suggs had an extension.  Wow.

I think Suggs will find a way to get back into a beast mode.   I remember when people put him down after a surgery year.  Then a season later, he was in DPOY form.  He falls out of favor, but he knows how to pick himself back up.

I don't doubt for a moment he will find a way to get himself in elite form.
