We have the players they just not being used properly.

EXACTLY, You mean to tell me premier pass rushers like Suggs and Dumervil can't muster up one sack anymore. I doubt it. Do we teach these guys how to tackle anymore? WE have the talent on Defense, This is coaching. We need to do a clean slate on Defense like we did on offense. If we are still bad...Harbs you're next.

Too many screens today. Never thought I'd say that, but we ran too many and few of them were effective. I dig creativity, but it's gotta work.

Yeah I like the play calling on both offense and defense but are our guys good enough for what we aim to do. I don't know how we can fix that but we need more talent, especially on offense. Starting Ricky Wagner was due to lack of a better option not because we know he would be great. The more and more I look back at the game the more I love the play calling and strategy.

I like Flacco but I'm not sold on him post big contract. He has to overcome this adversity he gonna face. Everything not always gonna be perfect like 2012 playoff run. Gotta be a better leader.

He doesn't have to be amazing all the time, nobody is. But mistakes like he made today are inexcusable. He turns in this type of performance too often. He should be getting better but post-contract he's gotten worse.

I want to know two things, and there may or may not be a thread coming in the next few days:

1) Why was Chykie on AJ Green late?

2) Who had the bright idea for Joe to take one last shot in the first half? Joe himself, Kubiak or Harbaugh? They should give themselves an uppercut and be made to do suicides for a few minutes at the next training session.

I'll come back with more later tonight. Time to get through my work day and rewatch the game when I get back.

I love Kubiak's system 100X better than Cam's playbook.

I agree. Kubiak did a good job. The execution just wasn't there. We needed a whole half and a fumble to figure out that: Forsett>Pierce and Flacco only seems to have clicked with his TEs for now. I still see alot of potential here, it just takes time to figure things out for our guys on offense. Hopefully we'll do it faster than the Steelers did last season.

Also, I don't get how anyone can complain about the D. Yeah, they won't be top 5 this season, but they did a pretty good job, if you consider how long they were kept on the field by out O in the first half.

Kubiak needs to learn that Joe is a rhythm QB and get him started off with some passes early on, and yes it would help if the WR's would catch 'em, lol.  Like some with Pitta, Daniels, and Juice, which I don't remember seeing hardly any of in the first half.  There was a lot of miscommunication on routes and reading schemes today by the WR's, like the one between Joe and Pitta in the end zone.  I think they will get this ironed out. It is a totally new offense, I expected this...it will take some time to iron out the wrinkles.

Offensive gameplan was fine.

Defensive...well I've never liked Pees, and he still hasn't given me a reason to think differently.

Webb better play on Thursday or we should be prepared to get quick pass, screened, and FG'd to death again.. I guarantee Chykie plays a bunch of snaps next week, this coaching staff flat out refuses to acknowledge that he's a liability out there.

Chykie could get roasted and give up the game winning catch for the next 5 straight games and Pees/Harbs will still throw him out there with the starters. They refuse to learn they're lesson, they refuse to bring in help at a position we desperately need it at. We miss Corey Graham just as much as anyone right now.. Graham and Josh Wilson both got raw deals here, they played their way into a nice contract and got shown the door because they wouldn't play for peanuts.

AMEN!

Winners

Justin Forsett - its too bad we didn't run the ball more despite him playing really well. i thought they'd give him the ball at the end like in the red zone the first time we got there. He was next man up and he definitely stepped up.

Offensive line - when we did run the ball, we gave some good lanes for forsett. and for the most part flacco was protected. Most of the hits were after the throw. this group can say they were not the cause of the problem today like they were all last year.

Jimmy Smith - played well considering we had zero pass rush. Almost came up with a pick in the endzone too. the probowl predictions might come true if he actually gets recognized (doubt that happens)

Winners and Loser

Joe Flacco - He is a loser today because the terrible mistake at the end of the half was definitely costly, the INT, and because a few throws were off. but he made a great effort in the 2nd half to get us in the game. but of course, some other things happened that had nothing to do with him also...

Gary Kubiak - one of them was Gary. The first half playcalling was pretty mind boggling. every throw was at least 20 yards downfield or more which isnt flacco's strength (looked cameron-esque) and we barely ran the ball either. Bengals were screening us at will but our offense chose to ignore them. i'd still consider gary a winner though because he did make the adjustments. The stuff i hoped for was eventually called and we had success. im confident gary sees what worked and uses that stuff more the rest of the year. Don't expect what happened in the first quarter and a half to happen again.

All Pass catchers - can't believe we still have nobody that can catch a ball after all this time. And Torrey and Joe's chemistry is still terrible after all these years. The drops were critical ones too. not little dink and dunk drops. These were drops that would've resulted in 20 yard gains, numerous first downs, and ultimately made us kill drives. That said, getting open consistently was refreshing and they did make numerous plays down the stretch like Smitty's TD.

Losers

Frank Walker - excuse me, chykie brown. the guy cant cover. when we ask to keep everything in front, he gets beat for a GW TD. The only goal i had for him was not to give up any huge plays. that box remains unchecked. Webb isnt going to save the D by any means but just to get Chykie out of there will be relieving.

Safeties - As far as i could tell, there was no help in the back end, stewart on most of the big plays (could've had a TD saving tackle on Green). no notable contributions from elam either. very disappointing. Darian is looking more like Michael Huff (the bust) than Digs (the surprise). one played FS, the other a SS but you get my point...

Defensive Front/Dean Pees - In my eyes, the most disappointing of anything. Makes me sick we couldn't pressure an average QB and made him completely comfortable. i think i spotted him making a cup of tea back there before he threw a couple of those balls... A line including Ngata, Suggs, and Dumervil, i expect so much more. this has been a major problem since like week 8 of last year. i combined it with Dean Pees because he never exactly helps out the dline by giving CB's soft coverage and is reluctant in calling blitzes.

He did get touched once, and still managed to throw that screen pass

Figured he prolly got touched once or twice.. Weren't any QB hits credited whenever I checked

Good defenses get pressure without blitzing. Fact. With how much money we've invested in Suggs, Doom, and Ngata we should be able to get pressure without blitzing.

If everyone's first rant isn't about the pass rush, then I just don't know what to say..

Andy dalton did not get touched all game... Not a single time...

Imagine flacco with that kind of time

This, it was as bad as our first half offense but for 4 quarters instead of 2

I know you don't want to read this, especially coming from me but the Ravens are a damn good team. Come game 4 or 5, this Ravens Offense is going to be Smokin', it just takes a little time to get it together. I'm sure most of you all know this.

Also remember, the Bengals are a good team as well. When Burfict went out, this Bengals Defense almost folded but came up big at the end of the game. One play decided the game and it was the sack on fourth down. The fumble, the interception, the AJ Green Touchdown wasn't the deciding factor.

Flacco played his butt off the second half of this game. He had almost 300 yards and a touchdown in the second half. Flacco almost single handedly won this game in the second half.

What a great game. It wasn't decided until the very end and I was on the edge of my seat praying the Bengals Defense could make just one play. I don't know how the season is going to turn out but I can gaurentee it will be the Ravens and the Bengals at the top of this division with both in the playoffs at the end.

Good luck next week against the Steelers, like you really need it. I think the Ravens will roll the Steelers without much of a problem.

Well, that was painful.

So what did we learn?

  • Our O-Line is still horrendous. We'll need to keep two tight ends in against Pittsburgh and all they'll do is block.
  • Our receivers have the drops. Wonderful.
  • And our defense is definitely top 30.

I say it every year but it never goes out of style- Dean Pees needs to find a new home. The defense was slow, can't tackle, and how Green ends up across from Brown during the last series is a mystery. For the entire first half, the D looked confused and out of place on almost every play. Bend but don't break doesn't work in this league anymore. Just a poor defenseive performance all around.

And while Mosley did a nice job, I don't think he's going to be the kind of playmaker that will make up for poor cornerback play. If he's not in the QB's face several times a game, then we wasted a first round draft pick given our needs at corner. Webb is unreliable, and we should consider that a given going into each season.

Outplayed in all phases, at home, game one.

Doesn't bode well.

That surprises me as that one part was definitely a hit

Flacco had time today.  I can't say what was happening with the wrs, but he had many opportunities where he had time in a clean pocket.

Never thought I'd agree with you but here we are. But I'd add that the receivers were awful too, especially Jones.

Hi, I hope you had a good summer.

Getting Jones to run a play short and inside the hash marks isn't very wise unless he's a decoy. The Ravens have big framed tight ends with good hands  and Smith Bros.

I agree the receiving corps had more than their fair share of drops today but a good amount were difficult receptions. 3 or 4 passes off the top of the heads were dropped IMO that has to be caught.

I still think Joe is late with the ball just as always. Check the tape on Dalton, he's decisive. He drops back , locates an area and fires.

Agreed, the OL played fine. Flacco was off in the first half and the receivers stunk.

Next game we need to get the TEs involved because they're the only reliable catchers.

I know one thing for sure... We had at least 6 drops! What kind of WR core has 6 drops in a single game? It's a shame the comeback was short lived, but per the usual last year or so... Lack of finish by the defense thwarted a serious comeback of 16pts in the second half!

That long pass to Jones HAS to be caught. Inexcusable.
