18th anniversary of the first regular season game in Ravens history

23 posts in this topic

Today marks the anniversary of the historic first game in Baltimore Ravens history at Memorial Stadium where they won 19-13 over the Oakland Raiders.  Vinny Testaverde scored the first TD for the team.  I was there in the open lower end zone and I remember Art Modell giving the Baltimore Colts Hall of Famers jackets that said Ravens on the back and Former Colt on the lapel.   Back then they couldn't afford a practice squad and I still have some of those Winged B logos in my closet.  Anyone have some memories of that day they might want to share?

Man, I was 14. No wife, no kids, no mortgages and just about no responsibilities. A lifetime or two ago.

Happy Anniversary, Ravens. 2 SBs, couple DPOY, multiple first ballot HoFers and years and years of awesomeness!

Maaan!  Memories!  I was back in Germany as a civilian and not in the military as before at that time living with my family!  We were there for about 8 years until we came back stateside in 2003.  Go Ravens!!

I was at the game. We used to take express buses out to Memorial Stadium since there was so little parking. We all had tears in our eyes at the start of the game because it was so emotional to FINALLY have football back.

It was so hard to find Ravens shirts to wear to the games. The selection was pretty small. I still have a couple of the original shirts, though.

I got one of the first shirts by sending in money to Nestor. In the DC area, you cold get shirts at Caldor in Silver Spring or Montgomery Ward in Wheaton Plaza. Nowadays all the local sporting good stores have them.

I still remember the Ravens record under Ted Marchibroda, 16-31-1. We started on the road to being an elite franchise when Brian Billick was hired. Then Steve Bisciotti came on board as a minority, then majority owner. Back then you couldn't watch all the Ravens games on Washington TV like now. Got yelled at in a bar, called a "carperbagger fan", I said "I wear your scorn like a badge of honor"

A line from the Grateful Dead's Truckin' describes my experiences as a fan. "What a long, strange trip its been"

I was 13 and addicted to Final Fantasy 3 on the SNES. I lived on the 1400 block of W. Ostend St. I could hear every single cheer from my house

I believe that was four years and a couple weeks before I was born. I should try to find that game on YouTube though.

Ditto & so far ur the oldest... I was 25

I was 35 back then.  And my ticket cost 27 dollars for that game from phone charge, I think.  Ticketmaster.com internet ticket buying was a few years away.

I admit I was a little late jumping on the bandwagon, only when the Stallions announced they were moving to Montreal did I get on board and have no regrets.

When my brother passed away unexpectedly in 1998, I grabbed his original Ravens Tshirt and took it back to Colorado. Wore it all the time for him, and still do. Didn't become a fan until later, though.

Sorry to hear that.
