Running Cut Thread (Ravens)

484 posts in this topic

Not even including Marlon brown who had 8 TDs as a rookie.

Not to mention we had a 2 or 3 year period leading up to the Super Bowl where we didn't cut a single draft pick including 7th rounders like that one RB that had the key block on Jacoby's kick return in the Super Bowl. Some draft picks get cut. It happens.

Simon got cut because he played a position we are really deep at. Its unfortunate but it happens.

He'll probably end up somewhere still.

We had ten draft picks. we can't expect all of them to stick around. The mark of a good draft class in my opinion is getting two or three starters out of it. We have four starters and a significant role player. Good class

I forgot we had that many.  Ive cooled down now so my posts should be a little more thought out now

Round 1: Matt Elam, Safety (Florida) Starter

Round 2: Arthur Brown, ILB (Kansas State) Key backup/future starter

Round 3: Brandon Williams, DT (Missouri Southern State) Starter

Round 4: John Simon, DE/OLB (Ohio State) First real surprise cut

Round 4: Kyle Juszczyk, FB (Harvard) Starter

Round 5: Ricky Wagner, OT (Wisconsin) Starter

Round 6: Kapron Lewis-Moore, DE (Notre Dame) Injured

Round 6: Ryan Jensen, C (Colorado State-Pueblo) Still practice squad eligible.

Round 7: Aaron Mellette, WR (Elon) Talented player. Chronic knee injury ended career.

Round 7: Marc Anthony, CB (California) 7th round corner. What do you expect?

I still count 5 starters out of that group already. Lewis-Moore may have been another if he didn't get injured again. If you browse the cuts of other teams you will see a lot of teams cutting much higher drafted player. The Texans and Bengals just cut recent 2nd round picks and thats just off the top of my head.

It's pretty impressive to get that many starters out of a draft class. Williams, Brown, and Elam have a chance to be very good starters too imo.

Well this isn't exactly the thread for it but let's talk a second about 2013 being a bad class.

Most of our draft classes don't bring us that many starters.

2007: Grubbs, Yanda, L McClain 3/7

2008: Flacco, Rice, Cousins? 3/10

2009: Oher, Kruger?, Webb 3/6

2010: Pitta, Arthur Jones, Cody? 3/7

2011: Jimmy Smith, Torrey Smith, McPhee? 3/8

I'm not going any further because it's still unclear. Even some of those guys I was generous on whether I'd consider them a starter. These numbers of our 2013 class don't really pale in comparison.

I agree. 2013 was a pretty solid draft overall especially in comparison to others.

Parker Graham and Jeremy Butler have yet to be officially announced, but it seems they'll be cut.

Pending we add no one else, that would leave the final spots for 2 out of Kamar Aiken, Deonte Thompson, and Zach Orr.  We'd need 1 more cut and those seem to be the 3 options.  I believe we'll add someone though.

Dominique Franks cut.

I would have been really shocked by that if it wasn't reported earlier that Webb, Smith, and Jackson were practicing today and we did not pick up Cox, an experienced corner. I guess they still like what they see in Brown, although he really needs to cut down on the PI penalties.

It's like saying "Look how bad we are at drafting - we cut guys we drafted in favor of other guys we drafted."

We lead the league in comp picks, of course not everyone's gonna make it. 2013 looks like a very solid group in addition to the guys they're competing with - 2012 and 2014 among them. I love our last 3 drafts.

The #Ravens are reportedly looking to trade for secondary help. Expect it to happen soon, as the roster deadline is less than an hour away.

That's a 50/50 split failure vs success. Not really very good.

Actually it is. How many starters do you think teams really get from the draft that are very good? Sometimes teams hang onto guys too long. Getting Brown, Williams, Juszczyk and Wagner alone make that draft a good draft. Then with Elam, who's a bit up in the air right now, and that's five starters. That's great!

You look to get two to three starters per draft class. That's really good

I think the biggest issue with Simon is that we drafted a guy that was really never going to get a shot.  He was always going to be buried on the depth chart here with Suggs, Dumervil, and Upshaw in front of him.

I get what you are saying, but he was drafted before Suggs was extended and he was coming off a major injury. Personally, I'm not a big fan of always taking BPA because this type of issue comes up. However, if Simon had actually shown significant promise he wouldn't have been cut. Sometimes, players just don't pan out.

Simon being cut is no surprise he didn't impress or wow. He was just an effort guy, so unless he became a star special teams player he never had a shot
