James Hurst

Saved by Jah Reid's health concerns and a lack of OT talent around the league. Don't get me wrong, I love Hurst's upside but he is not ready to play this year at all if preseason was any indication. O-line is a difficult transition and most need a year to really get the hang of being an NFL o-lineman and dealing with these next level defenses.

I don't think Hurst is in clear waters yet. I think we'll still make moves and they could potentially cut him. With that said, if anything saves him it's the fact that Reid is a free agent next year and the injury concerns surrounding Reid.

Yeah Hurst is one of a few that isn't in the clear yet.  If we want to add a veteran interior OL, Hurst would likely be the odd man out.

Yeah, I'm not making any assumptions at this point. He's definitely deserved to make it this far but now it's on him to look great each week and it's on him to give the coaches a reason to not cut him.

My thinking exactly. Getting "stashed" on IR is KoD.

Complete truth to this.  I always hated the idea considering it means they can't practice with the team.  You'd have to hire a trainer in the offseason to work with.  Extremely hard to be in that situation.

I knew there was something we could agree on. :)

Has anyone that's gotten stashed on IR ever come back the next season and actually made the team?

Out of curiousity, I checked and in the Harbaugh era (since 2008) out of all the players we've put on IR in late August/early September, both with legit injuries and to stash them, the only one to come back and have any sort of career in the NFL is Dwan Edwards.

This doesn't exactly bode well for KLM and Urban. :(

With Urban and KLM both were going to make the 53 until their season ending injuries.  Urban will make the team so long as he doesn't get hurt again. KLM, after a knee and achilles, I'm not so sure how much burst he'll have after.

I was OK with keeping Hurst. I am not a Jah Reid fan, but he did play better. I worry though, because he is still fragile. I was definitely OK with cutting Shipley. I was really surprised watching Urschel out playing Jensen. I thought Jensen had the potential to be a future starting Guard, but after watching him I was just not that impressed. With that said, I don't think any of these guys are completely safe.

Hurst improved every game imo. Possible slow start from past injury and lack of practice? I dont trust Jah Reid and we need someone that can fill in at LT. Not the best scenario but it hardly  is when your starter goes down.

I always thought Hurst would make the team as long as we wasn't absolutely terrible. He only went undrafted because of an injury and has talent. But the main reason why I thought we would keep him is we need a backup LT. Other than Hurst who is there with Oher gone?

Wagner? No

Reid? No

Osemele? No

If an injury occurred to Monroe it would've been KO. If you recall, we were going to make KO the starting LT before we re-signed Monroe. I know some of that's coach speak but he did practice there before and has the body for it. Also, usually a lot of teams like to slide their LG over to LT in the event of injury.

I think it would actually have been Kelechi Osemele who would be the back-up/emergency left tackle had James Hurst not made the 53-man roster. I remember reading something like that on here a few weeks back, if I'm remembering it correctly. Obviously, that would create a bunch more holes with the o-line, showing how bare Baltimore's depth at offensive line is.

It seems we both remember this so I imagine we're both not imagining lol. Well, we could move Gradkowski, Urschel or Reid to LG. Probably a likely scenario and you never know how those guys will perform. Maybe we know how Reid will be even then this is a contract year for him.

I hear you. Obviously we would have had to put someone out at LT. My point was they all would be poor option. Even if Osemele could handle LT (which he'd probably be average at best at) then we have a hole at LG. At least this way we plug a guy off the bench and the rest of the line stays intact.

Let's just hope this never becomes a reality. Because, if it does... well, you know; the season is out-the-window, at that point.

That said, if Eugene Monroe were to go down (and James Hurst takes his spot at left tackle), Jah Reid is probably the best bet at left guard, honestly. Gino spent this entire summer working as the back-up center; is he even ready to be a starting guard in the NFL? And, the same goes for John Urschel: He's just a project, at this point. Urschel did okay against 2nd-and-3rd stringers; but, he would just get destroyed as a starting left guard during his rookie year.

The entire starting o-line NEEDS to remain healthy, basically.

Wow! That's a really scary scenario. Hurst at LT, Reid at LG.

Yeah, I made a mistake. I meant Osemele would takeover for Monroe if he were to get injured.

Yeah that's what I figured. It made sense in the context of what you said.
